Mamie Efird Agner

Mamie Efird Agner, 86, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 15, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Agner, a daughter of the late W.M. and Maggie Littleton Efird, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

She retired from Cannon Mills. A member of Providence United Methodist Church, she was a former member of Union Lutheran Church’s Molly Lyerly-Daisey Poplin Women of the Church and the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Good Time Club.

Her husband, James Arthur Agner, preceded her in death.

Survivors include stepson James A. Agner Jr., Salisbury; stepdaughter Peggy Agner Troutman, Salisbury; and three step-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor, Union Lutheran Church. Burial, Union Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Charles R. Beck

LEXINGTON — Charles Reid Beck, 85, Primrose Drive, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at High Point Regional Hospital after a week of illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mount Tabor United Church of Christ. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Primrose Drive.

Lawrence Ray Beck

Lawrence Ray Beck, 86, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury.

Born July 11, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Beck was a son of the late James Madison and Minnie Gullett Beck. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1975, he retired from the Town of Spencer. Earlier, he was employed with Southern Railroad, N.C. Finishing Co., and the city of Salisbury.

He was a member of North Main Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a choir member for many years and a member of the Massey Bible Sunday School Class.

Survivors include wife Madeline Hess Beck, whom he married July 6, 1937; sons Larry Ray and Billy Gray Beck, both of Salisbury; sister Bessie Beck Shuping, East Spencer; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dale Robertson, pastor, North Main Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Graveside rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

David A. Bostian

MOUNT ULLA — David Alexander Bostian, 73, 1775 Umbarger Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 14, 1928, Mr. Bostian was a son of the late Fred and Clara Lipe Bostian. He retired from Unifour-Glass Inc., where he was a machine operator.

His wife, Sarah Lackey Bostian, died in 1975. A brother, Robert Paul Bostian, also died on Feb. 19, 2002.

Survivors include daughters Tina Bostian, Mount Ulla, and Karen Bostian Ghomizadeh, Salisbury; other brother MelvinBostian, Cleveland; sisters Margie Cowan, Cleveland, and Juanita Blackwelder and Perl Bell, both of Mount Ulla; and five grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Back Creek Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. Bill Thrailkill. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Neill Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Robert Paul Bostian

MOUNT ULLA — Robert Paul Bostian, 74, 520 Centenary Church Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2002) at his home.

A son of the late Fred and Clara Lipe Bostian, Mr. Bostian was born on April 21, 1927, in Rowan County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Retired from Harris Teeter, he was a meat market manager for 45 years.

A brother, David Alexander Bostian, also died on Feb. 19, 2002.

Survivors include wife Sara Blackwelder Bostian; son Robert Paul Bostian Jr., Mount Ulla; daughter Sandy Bostian Harp, Greenville, S.C.; other brother Melvin Bostian, Mooresville; sisters Margie Cowan, Cleveland, and Juanita Blackwelder and Perl Bell, both of Mount Ulla; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Centenary United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Champion. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Neill Funeral Home.

Leona Hall Bowers

ROCKWELL — Leona Irene Hall Bowers, 82, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Feb. 20, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Joel Scott Ennis

Joel Scott “Scotty Roddy” Ennis, 39, 2250 Enon Church Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 14, 1962, in Rowan County, Mr. Ennis was a son of Herman Joel Ennis and Shirley Ann Myers Ennis, both of Salisbury. He attended West Rowan High School.

An electrician, he was employed by Christie Electric.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include son Christopher Neil Ennis, of the home; daughters Alicia Marie Ennis, of the home, and Sunshine Rachel Ennis, Salisbury; and grandfather Hobert C. Myers, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Seagroves, interim pastor, Franklin Baptist Church, and the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church, Spencer. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Wayne and Diane Christie, 2640 Gheen Road or at the home of his father, Joel Ennis, 245 Stanwyck Road, Neel Estates.

O. Ray Floyd

SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for O.Ray Floyd, 79, 505 Seventh St., who died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after two months of declining health.

Born June 18, 1922, in Richfield,Mr. Floyd was a son of the late Jessie F. and Annie Crumpton Floyd. He was educated in the Stanly County schools and was a graduate of Richfield High School and Catawba College, Salisbury.

During World War II, he was a B-25 pilot with the U.S. Army.

An independent life insurance agent, he owned and operated O. Ray Floyd Insurance Agency from 1963 until his retirement in 1988.

His wife, Evelyn Gooch Floyd, died May 3, 1993.

Survivors include sons Charles L. Floyd, Raleigh, and Ronald Wesley Floyd, Tampa, Fla.; brothers Ross Floyd, Baltimore, Md., and Bill Floyd, Smoakes, S.C.; sister Mary Floyd, Weddington; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Tillie Honeycutt

MOUNT ULLA — Tillie Bradshaw Goodman Honeycutt, 93, 535 Bradshaw Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at Liberty Commons Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1909, in Rowan County, Mrs. Honeycutt was a daughter of the late Newton Flynn and Ada Menius Bradshaw. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A homemaker, she was a member of Landis Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Charlie Goodman, died in 1981; her second husband, Harry Honeycutt, died in 1995; and daughter Margaret Corriher died in 1975.

Survivors include sons Gray Goodman, Mount Ulla, and Richard Goodman, Charlotte; daughter Dolly Moose, Mount Ulla; sisters Josephine Bradshaw, Mount Ulla, Sophie Deal, China Grove, and Lorene Nance, Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Back Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Michael Hilson. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Dolly Moose, 535 Bradshaw Road.

 

Robert L. McBride Jr.

EUTAWVILLE, S.C. — Robert Lee “Mac” McBride Jr., Rocks Pond, brother of Hilda Shaver, Salisbury, N.C., died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002).

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 17 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Greenridge Road Chapel. Burial was private.

The family received friends on Feb. 17 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the memorial service.

Pauline L. McInnis

KANNAPOLIS — Pauline Long McInnis, 91, formerly of Sloop Avenue, died Wednesday (Feb. 20, 2002) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

John E. Mesimore

The funeral will be Thursday for John Emerson Mesimore, 78, Salisbury, who died Monday (Feb. 18, 2002) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after six months of serious illness.

Born Feb. 28, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Mesimore, a son of the late Murray and Ella Lingle Mesimore, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

During World War IIand the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines.

He retired from Piedmont Natural Gas. Earlier he worked at a number of automobile dealerships and taught mechanic school.

A member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, he was in the Men’s Sunday school class and president of the Season Saints. He was also a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post, Aid Association for Lutherans and the USS Washington Reunion Group.

Survivors include wife Edith Yost Mesimore, whom he married April 1, 1949; son Charles Mesimore, Rockwell; daughter Elizabeth “Libby”Parker, Rockwell; sisters Doris Curlee and Rachel Mesimore, both of Salisbury; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Hefner and the Rev. Lori Hefner, co-pastors. The Season Saints and Men’s Sunday school class will be seated as a group. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Catherine E. Tarlton

KANNAPOLIS — Catherine Eagle Tarlton, 220 W. 21st St., died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
