Harold R. Boettcher
Shirlie H. Boettcher
ADVANCE —Harold Reece Boettcher and his wife, Shirlie Hicks Boettcher, of Justin Court, both died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002).
Born May 28, 1947, Mr. Boettcher was a son of Jenny Louise Biles, Advance, and the late Reece William Boettcher. He was a 1966 graduate of Davie High School and received certifications as a mechanical engineer from Rowan Cabarrus Community College.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a manufacturing technologist with IngersolRand Corp. for 25 years.
Born Feb. 27, 1941, in Stokes County, Mrs. Boettcher was a daughter of Rumel Biles Holder, Pfafftown, and the late Vester Ransom Hicks. She attended Walkertown High School.
Previously employed at Western Electric, she was the owner/operator of Just Shirlies Cleaning Service.
Shirlie Boettcher was preceded in death by a daughter, Venita Lorraine Jordan.
The Boettchers were members of Middle Cross Baptist Church. In addition to their mothers, the couple is survived by daughter Christie Boettcher, Mocksville; and five grandsons.
Additional survivors for Mr. Boettcher include stepdaughters Sharon Bailey, Mocksville, and Sherry Jordan, Seattle, Wash.; stepson Scott Jordan, Advance; and brother Jimmy Boettcher, Mocksville.
Mrs. Boettcher is also survived by other daughters Sharon Bailey, Mocksville, and Sherry Jordan, Seattle, Wash.; son Scott Jordan, Advance; and sister Verlie Hicks Creasman, Pfafftown.
Service: Double service, 11 a.m. Thursday, EatonFuneral Home chapel, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Tom Maxie and the Rev. Bobby Biles. Burial, Rose Cemetery.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lucy ‘Sue’ Clement
KANNAPOLIS — Lucy “Sue” Lowrance Clement, 83, 308 N. East Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Transitional Health Services.
Born May 17, 1918, in Iredell County, Mrs. Clement was a daughter of the late Charles Payne and Bess Shumaker Lowrance. Retired, she was part owner and operator of the former Isabelle’s Shoppe for approximately 50 years.
A resident of Kannapolis since 1930, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a former member and past treasurer of the Pilot Club.
Survivors include husband Robert H. “Bob” Clement Jr.; sons Phillip Wayne Clement, China Grove, and William Payne Clement, Kannapolis; brother Joe G. Lowrance, Greenville, S.C.; sisters Betty Lowrance Waller, Salisbury, and Ann Lowrance Clark, Durham; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Whitley’s funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum.

Helen Wilson Doby
SPENCER — Helen Lucille Wilson Doby, 80, Spencer, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born July 1, 1921, in Rowan County, Mrs. Doby was a daughter of the late James and Bessie Honbarrier Wilson. She was educated in Rowan County schools and Salisbury Business College.
A homemaker, she was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Clayton Doby, on Aug. 8, 1997.
Survivors include daughter Judy Doby Camp, Kings Mountain; brothers Jim and Homer Wilson, both of Salisbury; sisters Edith Sims, Spencer, Ruth Dodge, Chesapeake, Va., and Jewell House, Taylors, S.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

John E. Mesimore, 78, Salisbury, died Monday (Feb. 18, 2002) in Salisbury.

Lillie B. Messick
The funeral will be Wednesday for Lillie B. Messick, 94, Salisbury, who died Monday (Feb. 18, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 4, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Messick, a daughter of the late Thomas and Annie Hellard Bowers, was a graduate of Cooleemee High School.
She retired from Cannon Mills Co. after almost 40 years. A member of Southside Baptist Church, she was a former member and Sunday school teacher at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Her husband, DeWitt Columbus Messick, died Nov. 27, 1971.
Survivors include son Allen D. Messick, Salisbury; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Frances ‘Polly’ Payne
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Frances Eller “Polly” Payne, 81, formerly of 1209 E. First St., who died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare, Salisbury.
Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Payne was a daughter of the late Arthur and Rosa Lee James Gulledge. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Payne, on May 26, 1997.
Survivors include daughter Loretta Huneycutt, Kannapolis; brother Henry Gulledge, Ruby, S.C.; sisters Bessie Rorie, Pageland, S.C., and Chris Faile, Fort Lawn, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Nancy Todd Powell
WEST JEFFERSON — Nancy Todd Powell, 79, Salisbury, formerly of West Jefferson, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Heritage Plantation.
Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Marion, Va., Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late William Brazzle and Margaret Pruner Todd.
She was retired from the West Jefferson Police Department, where she had served as a police officer and dispatcher.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, West Jefferson, Ashe County Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary and the Eastern Star.
Survivors include daughters Joan Simpson, Concord, Teena Derocher, Tampa, Fla., Mary Burgess, West Jefferson, and Becky Spencer, Salisbury; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m., Wednesday, Ashelawn Memorial Gardens, Jefferson. The body will be cremated. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery, Marion, Va.
Visitation: Following the service Wednesday.

ALBEMARLE — Bessie Hudson Smith, 96, of 625 Bethany Road, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Stanly Manor Nursing Center.

Corinne A. Thomas
The funeral will be Wednesday for Corinne A. Thomas, 94, 322 S. Ellis St., who died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Thomas was a daughter of the late Milton L. and May L. Austin. Educated in the Salisbury schools, she received a bachelor of arts degree from Livingstone College. She also earned a bachelor of Library Science from North Carolina College, Durham, now N.C. Central University.
Mrs. Thomas taught in the Salisbury School System for over 40 years.
A life-long member of First Calvary Baptist Church, she was a member of Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. For many years she co-chaired the sorority’s debutante ball and its charm school. She was also a member of Merry Matrons Club, Livingstone College Alumni Association, North Carolina Retired School Personnel and J.C. Price High School National Alumni Association.
Survivors include cousins reared in the home Yvonne and Michael Dash. She also reared Edward and James Miller and opened her home to students from Livingstone and Catawba colleges.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Calvary Baptist Church.
