Mary ‘Pete’ Austin

CHARLOTTE — Mary Petorah “Pete” Austin, 94, 3600 Park Road, formerly of Albemarle, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Mecklenburg Health Care, Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Albemarle. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of daughter Nancy Josey, 5615 Rebel Drive, Charlotte.

Pete Junior Barnes

THOMASVILLE — Pete Junior Barnes, 30, 206 Memorial Park Drive, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Thomasville Medical Center of injuries from gunshot wounds.

Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

 

Sheila Blackwood

Sheila Darlene Patterson Blackwood, 38, 177 Ryan St., died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 7, 1963, in Iredell County, Ms. Blackwood was a daughter of Ray L. McClelland, Concord, and the late Jean Ann Caldwell Patterson. She was educated at Mooresville High School and was employed at VFJeanswear Inc.

She was a member of Watkins Chapel AMEZion Church, Mooresville, and the Gospel Ensemble.

She was preceded in death by a son, Cameron Ra’Quan Patterson, on Sept. 21, 1999.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include brother Johnny Ray Caldwell of the home; half-brothers Ray McClelland Jr. and Corey McClelland, both of Concord; sisters Joyce Williams, Lexington, and Mary Harrison, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Watkins Chapel AME Zion Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Lee, pastor. Burial, Green Acres Cemetery, Mooresville.

Visitation: 2:30-3p.m. Wednesday at the church. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Lucy L. Clement

KANNAPOLIS —Lucy L. Clement, 84, 308 N. East Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Transitional Health Services.

Helen Lucille Doby

SPENCER Helen Lucille Doby, 80, Spencer, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at her home.

Floyd Franklin Freeze

ROCKWELL — Floyd Franklin Freeze, 92, Rockwell, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 10, 1910, in Rowan County, Mr. Freeze was a son of the late Ada Wilhelm and Claude Freeze. He was educated in Rowan County schools, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired after 45 years in Cannon Mills No. 1 Weave Room.

He was a member of Organ Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He was a former Brotherhood member and a member of Faith American Legion Post 327.

His wife Sallie Parker Freeze, died Feb. 9, 1981.

Survivors include daughters Mildred Wise, China Grove, Martha Lingle, Granite Quarry, and Linda Benge, Rockwell; brother Calvin Freeze, China Grove; sister Lucille Freeze, China Grove; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of foster children.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Organ Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless, pastor. Burial Brookhill Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by Faith American Letion Post 327.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of daughter Linda Benge in Rockwell.

Alvan ‘Sonny’ Holmes

LEXINGTON — Alvan “Sonny”Holmes, 86, Pine Street, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Services: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Greater Faith Christian Church. Burial, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Salisbury VANational Cemetery.

Visitation: 5 p.m. Tuesday, Greater Faith Christian Church. The rest of the time, the family will be at the Pine Street home.

Public viewing from 5-8 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

Goldie Haynes Hunter

LEXINGTON — Goldie Mae Haynes Hunter, 87, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002)

Services: 2 p.m. today, graveside, Lexington City Cemetery.

 

Bettie Ruth Leonard

LEXINGTON —Bettie Ruth Cato Leonard, 67, of River Drive, Linwood, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a serious illness of one week.

Born Aug. 14, 1934, in Calhoun County, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Tommy D. Cato Sr. and Velma Lee Carter Cato. She was a former employee of Norman’s in Salisbury.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert Lee Leonard Jr. on Jan. 15, 2000, and by daughter Kathie Craver on July 22, 2000.

Survivors include son Robert “Butch” Leonard, Salisbury, and Carey Leonard, Linwood; brothers Tommy D. Cato, Asheboro, and Lewis Olmstead, Gainesville, Ga.; sister, Katherine Black, Commerce, Ga.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Chris Hawks. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, before the service, at the funeral home.

 

Nora Tucker Scruggs

Nora Tucker Scruggs, 91, 8130 Castor Road, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at her home.

Born July 23, 1910, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Scruggs was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Moore Tucker. She worked for Cannon Mills in the Plant 1 Sewing Room for approximately 40 years before retiring in 1975.

She was a member of Rowan Christian Assembly, Granite Quarry, and a former member of First Foursquare Church, Concord.

She was preceded in death by husbands Perkins Gulledge in 1953 and Summey A. Scruggs in 1987 and daughter Dorothy G. Ballard.

Survivors include daughter Myrtle G. Sifford, Salisbury; sister Frances Gulledge, Mount Croghan, S.C.; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Glynn R. Dickens. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Corinne A. Thomas

Corinne Austin Thomas, 94, 322 S. Ellis St., died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 28, 1907, in Rowan County, Ms. Thomas was a daughter of the late Mary and Milton L. Austin. She graduated from Price High School and Livingstone College and was a teacher and librarian in the Salisbury school system for more than 30 years.

She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Mitchell and Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Ethel ‘Sis’ Yost

Ethel Louise Euart “Sis” Yost, 79, 403 Yost Road, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 24, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Yost was a daughter of the late Lottie Viola Smith and John R. Euart. She was educated in Rowan County schools and retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, Weave Room No. 7, and from the meal site in Granite Quarry. She was a member of Rockwell United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband William Andrews Yost; son Rick D. Yost, Salisbury; brothers Carl and John R. Euart, both of Salisbury; sisters Polly Webb, Elsie Lomax and Betty Truett, all of Salisbury; and one stepgrandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Ellen Harkey. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Park, Rockwell.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home in China Grove.

Charles R.Safrit

Charles R. Safrit, 48, 411 Broadway St., Hanover, Pa., formerly of Salisbury, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at his home.

Born Aug. 18, 1953, in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Safrit was a son of the late Adam F. and Johnnie Watts Safrit.

He attended school in Westminister, Md. He was a superviosr for Food Lion for 20 years at various stores along the east coast. He was last employed as a supervisor at the Staples distribution center in Chambersburg, Pa.

He was preceded in death by wife Debra Lemly Safrit.

Survivors include daughter Kristin M. Safrit, Rocky Mount; son Adam R. Safrit; sister M. Frances Daigle, Westminister, Md.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg, Pa., led by the Rev. Leroy Davis. Private burial, Fairview Cemetery Mercersburg.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

LEXINGTON — Thelma Virginia Howell, 87, 310 Hillside Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Wesleyan Church, led by the Rev. Michael Greer. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Harold Allen James

CLEVELAND — Harold Allen James, 71, of 3120 Third Creek Church Road, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at his home.

Mr. James was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Statesville and was a son of the late Payton Dallas and Myrtle Gilleland James.

He was a graduate of Statesville City Schools and was retired from Loeblien Brothers of Salisbury. He attended Needmore Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

Survivors include son Danny James, Huntersville; daughters Debra J. Tucker and Tammie Wilhelm, both of Statesville; sisters Don Dixon and Louise Lapish, both of Statesville, and Willis Coates, Amsterdam, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nicholson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Howard R. Wagoner. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Helen Lund Kombol

KANNAPOLIS — Helen Annette Lund Kombol, 76, 227 Westover Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 22, 1925, in Racine, Wis., Mrs. Kombol was a daughter of the late Jesse and Ella Lund.

She graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine, Wis., in 1943. She moved to Kannapolis in 1999.

She had been a proofreader for Western Printing in Racine, Wis., for six years. For 23 years, she was secretary of the Musselshell Valley Chamber of Commerce in Roundup, where she helped plan many of the Fourth of July Rodeos. She had been active in the VFW, American Legion and the Calvary Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by husband Frank Kombol in 1991.

Survivors include son Anthony “Tony” Kombol, Kannapolis; daughter Susan Smith, California; sisters Marguerite Otto, Wisconsin, and Beatrice Hartough, Florida; brother Vilas “Bud” Lund, Wisconsin; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, memorial servied, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fred Hoffman.

Visitation: None.

Bettie Ruth Leonard

LEXINGTON — Bettie Ruth Cato Leonard, 67, River Drive, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a week of serious illness.

Mrs. Leonard was born in Calhoun County, Ala., Aug. 14, 1934, and was a daughter of the late Tommy D. and Velma Lee Carter Cato. She was a former employee of Norman’s of Salisbury.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert Lee Leonard and daughter Kathie Craver.

Lillie B. Messick, 94, Salisbury died Monday (Feb. 18, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Marvin R. Pressley

KANNAPOLIS — Marvin Robinson Pressley, 78, of 614 N. Walnut Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Transitional Health Service.

Born Dec. 14, 1923, in Union County, Mr. Pressley was a son of the late Ivory Robinson and Ada Hartsell Pressley.

An area resident since 1943, he retired in 1985 from Cannon Mills Co. where he was an overseer in Plant 1. He was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church where he was the Sunday School superintendent for 30 years and was active in various organizations of the church.

He was preceded in death by wife Gaynell Price Pressley in 1999.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Susan German. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visititation: 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

James Scarborough

James Amery Scarborough, 78, of 235 Correll Farm Road, Salisbury, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a year of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born April 20, 1923, in Madison County, Ga., Mr. Scarborough was a son of the late John Robert and Maude Hyde Scarborough.

He was employed with Beasley-Cross Chevrolet, Kannapolis, for many years and then owned his own used car business. He was working at Jackson Park Motors, Kannapolis, at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kannapolis, where he was a deacon, elder and trustee. He served the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was preceded in death by daughter Carolyn Albritton and son Ray Scarborough.

Survivors include wife Evelyn Lumsden Scarborough; daughters Linda Denney, Monroe, Ga., and Kay Blanton, Phenix City, Ala.; sisters Grace Chambers, Watkinsville, Ga., and Novice Carl, Dunnellon, Fla.; brothers Royce Scarborough, Kannapolis, and Melvin Scarborough, Phenix City, Ala.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Norred. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.
