North girls falter

BY STEVE HANF
SALISBURY POST

SPENCER—The North Rowan girls survived one sluggish start. They couldn’t manage two.

After leading the first quarter 6-3, the Cavs watched East Davidson score the first 10 points of the second half en route to a 49-33 victory.

“We came out not as intense as in the first half. You could see our’s drop and their’s pick up,”Cavs head coach Mike White said.

East (12-10, 8-6 CCC) shot just 1-for-15 in the first quarter, while North (1-22, 1-13) managed 1-for-11. But East turned it on in with a 23-8 third quarter and coasted to the finish.

North said goodbye to Keiko Purnell, Tanisha Harriston and Marquita Lipscomb on senior night. Junior Crystal Craige paced the Cavs with 13.

EAST DAVIDSON (49) — Watkins 2, Downing 6, Cutshaw 7, Sullivan 1, Cline 6, Anthony 2, Byerly 4, Sprinkle 8, Nance 7, Freeman 6, Yates.

NORTH ROWAN (33) — Cameron 8, Foxx 1, Hunter 6, Craige 13, Hendrick 3, Cuthbertson 2, Lipscomb, Purnell, Harriston.

Davie girls claim conference title

WELCOME — Davie County’s girls secured their first conference title in many years when they defeated North Davidson 69-65 in overtime on Friday night.

“People talk about playing in South Rowan’s gym, but going to North Davidson is every bit as tough,” said jubilant Davie coach Carol Cozart. “Both teams used everything in their bag of tricks.”

Post player Dawn Singleton (12 points, 13 rebounds) and guard Brittany Walker (11 points, 11 assists) had double-doubles for the War Eagles, who finished 8-2 in the 4A Central Piedmont Conference.

Allison Schafer (15 points) and Sarah Williams (10) also scored in double figures for the War Eagles. Ashley Williams contributed 10 rebounds.

Davie’s boys were not so fortunate. They still finished third in the CPC at 5-5, but were upset 86-76 by the Knights.

Nemanja Kreckovic led Davie with 30. Sean Stevens scored 20 and Dan Sullivan 10.

Davie’s boys will play Monday in the CPC tourney. The girls won’t play until Wednesday.

A.L. Brown’s girls fell 49-46 to NPC champ North Iredell. They finished fifth.

The Wonder boys won 57-39 over the Raiders to clinch third place and a state playoff berth. Both Wonder teams will be in tourney action on Tuesday.
