South storms past South Iredell in overtime

BY DAVID SHAW
SALISBURY POST

BARIUM SPRINGS — South Rowan’s boys basketball team stared defeat square in the eye Friday night — and refused to blink.

The never-say-die Raiders erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit and stormed past host South Iredell for a 94-77 overtime win.

“This bunch will never quit,” coach John Davis said after fourth-place South (12-12 overall) allowed no field goals over the last 9:02 and closed its CPC regular season with 4-6 record. “It may take us 30 minutes to get going, but the last two minutes we’ll be in position to win.”

South, which scored 15 straight points to build a 35-25 lead in the second period, found itself in panic mode after Vikings’ forward Michael Ellis (game-high 34 points) hit a short jump shot with 5:02 to play providing a 62-49 lead. “But we were never out of it,” insisted South’s Andrew Morgan. “We stepped up our defense and played with intensity.”

Roger that. The Raiders knocked down five three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including a pair by Graham Corriher. Ryan Keener scored seven points in 25 seconds to pull South within 69-67 and Morgan’s last-minute layup tied the score at 72-72 and forced OT. “We fought back little by little,” said teammate David Lane. “We couldn’t take it all at one time.”

They took all they needed — and then some — outscoring South Iredell 22-5 in overtime. “It wasn’t looking good,” said Davis, who stomped his foot in disgust as the third quarter expired. “But they made some big baskets and good decisions with the basketball and we were able to squeak one out.”
