West pounds Mustangs again

BY BRET STRELOW
SALISBURY POST

GRANITEQUARRY — Following East Rowan’s 109-59 loss to West Rowan on Jan. 18, coach Derek Kurnitsky said he didn’t think the Mustangs would get beaten so soundly again.

Kurnitsky would have been right if East wouldn’t have had to face West Rowan again a month later.

The Falcons got their usual strong outing from Donte Minter and a scoring boost from the backcourt to defeat the Mustangs 107-54 on Friday night.

The win capped a perfect regular season for the Falcons, who improved to 23-0 overall and 12-0 in the North Piedmont Conference.

“It absolutely means zero when it comes to state playoff time,” West coach Mike Gurley said. “But I think it’s an accomplishment that they’ll be proud of as they get older and look down the road about it.”

The Mustangs put up a respectable fight, but they were simply outmatched by the powerful Falcons.

Minter scored a game-high 26 points, but the duo of Brian Avery and Horatio Everhart gave East all kinds of trouble.

Their defense prevented the Mustangs from getting into an offensive flow, and their play at the other end of the floor provided West with a nice scoring balance.

Avery finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three steals, and Everhart had 15 points and six assists.

“Our guards, they’re confident enough to shoot the open jumper, but they’re also unselfish enough to penetrate into the gaps, put pressure on the backline of the zone, and they look for their teammates.

“They look in, they look out, and sometimes being unselfish means pulling open and knocking down that open shot in the lane.”

There aren’t many players better and that foul-line jumper than Avery, who hit 7 of 9 shots to eclipse his previous career-high 15 points.

Avery hit all three of his 3-point tries and didn’t even attempt a shot in the fourth quarter.

“I felt good coming out shooting the ball,” Avery said. “I kept shooting it, and it was going in for me.”

Everhart made the jobs of Avery and the other Falcons much easier. Everhart sliced through the Mustang defense and kicked the ball out to the wing for open jumpers throughout the game.

In the final two minutes of the first half, Everhart assisted a three consecutive West 3-pointers in the span of a minute to help West increase its lead to 54-21.

After each made 3, Everhart did his best Jason Capel impersonation and raised three fingers in the air.

“He’s so quick, it’s hard for anybody to guard him,” Avery said. “If you have a guard that quick, he’s going to look to dish off to you. Just spot up, and he’ll find you.”
