Charles Brinkley

LEXINGTON — Charles Franklin Brinkley, 44, Bethesda Road, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at his home after being ill for six months.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at 1927 Tall Pine Road, Welcome, N.C.

Memorials: Bethesda United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 2922 Bethesda Road, Lexington, N.C. 27295.

 

James Brown

MOCKSVILLE — James Franklin Brown, 70 of Lakewood Apartments, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born in Rowan County on June 3, 1931, Mr. Brown is the son of the late James Everette Brown and the late Edna Williams Hancock.

Prior to his illness he was employed as a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by wife Betty Tucker Brown.

Survivors include: sister Thelma Moore of Salisbury.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Legion Memorial cemetery in Cooleemee with the Rev. Robert Creason officiating.

Visitation: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Davie Funeral Service in Mocksville.

 

 

Johnny David Gould

ALBEMARLE — Johnny David Gould, 58, 28109 McSwain Road, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Albemarle Wesleyan Church. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

Allene Harris

NEW LONDON — Allene Kirk Harris, 67, of 45237 Gadson Road, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Born Feb. 19, 1934, in Person County, she is the daughter of the late Arthur Kirk and Navata McClain Kirk Gould.

She graduated from Person County High School, Roxboro.

Mrs. Harris was a former employee of Wiscassett Mills of Albemarle. She was a member of the Greater Mount Zion Ministry in Albemarle, former member of the gospel choir, member of the missionary circle, pastor’s aid, church aid, Sunday school teacher and church custodian. She also attended Saint Mark Church in Badin.

Survivors include husband Ed Harris of the home, sons Bobby Harris of Salisbury, Clarrence, Anthony, Henry, Nathan and James Harris, all of Albemarle, Ronnie Harris of Winston-Salem, Stanley, Sam and Michael Harris, all of New London, and Danny Harris of Badin, daughters Phyllis Gramling, Winfred Kendall, Jessie Harris, Jackie Harris and Katherine Harris, all of Albemarle, Eddrena Knight of Badin, Tami Leak of Mt. Gilead and Janett Little of Winston-Salem, brothers (her twin) Arthur Kirk of Baltimore and John Kirk of Roxboro, sisters Virginia and Cornelia Kirk, both of Roxboro, 85 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at the Greater Mount Zion Ministry in Albemarle, led by Bishop James T. Worthy, pastor. Burial at church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. until the funeral.

Kelsey Funeral Home of Albemarle is in charge of the arrangements.

 

 

Josephine Hobson

The funeral will be Sunday for Josephine Elaine Henderson Hobson, 74, 4760 Glendale St., Detroit, Mich., formerly of Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2002) at her home.

Born April 25, 1927, in Salisbury, Mrs. Hobson, a daughter of the late Clanton and Alice Ellis Henderson, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

She was a homemaker and a former member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Her husband, James Hobson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sister Grace Littlejohn, Washington, D.C.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, First Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leamon E. Brown. Burial, Oakdale Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Ada Simpson Lee

CONCORD — Ada Simpson Lee, 83, formerly of 220 Bishop Lane, Apt. 110, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Transitional Health Services, Kannapolis, after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 9, 1918, in Lopez, Pa., Mrs. Lee was a daughter of the late Enoch and Carolina Kiper Simpson. In 1979, she moved to the area from Binghamton, N.Y., where she worked as a nursing assistant.

She was a member of McGill Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, William Howard Lee, died in July 1988.

Survivors include son Charles Lee, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Steve Ayers. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Charles Lee, 5310 Tanbark Lane.

 

 

Marshall Michael

KANNAPOLIS — Marshall Conrad Michael, 84, of 215 Blackwelder St., died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three years and been seriously ill for one month.

Born July 25, 1917, in Davidson County, he is the son of the late Ira S. Michael and late Minnie Sain Michael.

He was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant No. 1, No. 2 and weave room for 47 years until he retired in 1978. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Margaret Freeze Michael, daughter Linda Michael Kiser of Kannapolis, brothers John Richard Michael of Winston-Salem and Howard Jacob Michael of Kannapolis, sisters Addie Mae Smith, Martha Link, Zella Craver and Nellie Forrest, Minnie Lee Brewer, all of Lexington,half-sisters Yvonne Huffman and Juanita Perrell, both of Lexington, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, led by the Rev. Charles MacMurphy. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Stella Safrit

ROCKWELL — Stella Bradshaw Safrit, 83, of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after being seriously ill for several days.

Born July 15, 1918, in Davie County, Mrs. Safrit is the daughter of the late Zeola Troutman Bradshaw and the late Samuel Moore Bradshaw.

She was educated in Davie County schools and China Grove’s Farm Life School.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by her husband Frank Junior Safrit in 1993 and by a grandson.

Survivors include sons Ronald Frank Safrit of Ritchfield and Larry Wayne Safrit and David Allen Safrit, both of Salisbury, daughter Rhonda Safrit Honeycutt of Rockwell, brothers James Bradshaw of Salisbury and Arnold Bradshaw of Matthews, sister Rachel Gaskey of Salisbury, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, led by the Rev. Johnny Daniel, pastor of East Corinth Baptist Church. Burial at Old Historic Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St.

Virgie Hatley Shoe

ALBEMARLE — Virgie Irene Hatley Shoe, 83, 16454 N.C. 73 Hwy., died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Salem United Methodist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on N.C. 73 Highway.

 

John Wesley Ward Jr.

The funeral will be Monday for John Wesley Ward Jr., 65, Salisbury, who died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.

Born June 11, 1936, in Butler County, Ohio, Mr. Ward was a son of the late Loren Albert and Goldie Ruth Cowgill Ward. He was educated in the Florida schools and Southern Missionary College.

Until his illness, he was employed by Flowers Bakery. He was a member of Salisbury Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he was deacon for several years.

Survivors include wife Nita Kluttz Ward, whom he married July 5, 1958; sons John W. Ward Jr. and Cary Maxwell Ward, both of Salisbury; daughter Tamera W. George, Rockwell; brother William Ward, Redding, Pa.; sister Virginia Ward Rial, West Laco, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.Warner Gil, minister, Salisbury Seventh Day Adventist Church. Entombment, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

T.C. Williams

LEXINGTON — Thomas Clinton Williams, 79, of Del Vista Drive, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. Ray Howell. Burial: 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home.

Marvin J. Wyrick

BLACK MOUNTAIN — Marvin Jefferson “Dick” Wyrick, 85, Fairway Drive, died at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center on Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) after a period of declining health.

Born May 13, 1916, in Rowan County, Mr. Wyrick was a son of the late Alfred Edward and Etta Loflin Wyrick. He retired fromOld Fort Finishing Co. after 32 years.

For 54 years, he was an active member of Black Mountain United Methodist Church, where he was Sunday school superintendent, head usher, and served on the board of trustees and numerous committees. He was a member of Black Mountain Golf Course and Black Mountain Lions Club.

Survivors include wife of 63 years Mildred Miller Wyrick; daughter Cecelia Adams; sisters Ethel Hoover, Concord, Agnes Leonard, Belmont, S.C., and Jane Curran, Salisbury; two grandsons; a step-granddaughter; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Black Mountain United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Collins. Burial, Mountain View Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Sunday at the church. At other times the family will be at 105 Fairway Drive or 112 Fairway Drive.

Brigman’s Funeral Service is in charge.
