Wrestling notebook: North Rowan’s David Coward top seed at 103 pounds

BY BRET STRELOW
SALISBURY POST

David Coward started wrestling only two years ago, but his lack of longevity hasn’t served as a handicap.

Coward enters this weekend’s 2A regionals at Eastern Guilford seeded first at 103 pounds.

North coach Tim Burns said Coward, who has a 26-1 record, is seasoned enough already to deal with the pressure of being the top seed.

“I wish I had 14 of him,” Burns said.“He’s had some close matches, and he has really matured a lot this year.”

Other North wrestlers competing are: 112-pounder Larry Jackson, 145-pounder Keith Turner, 152-pounder Aaron Rimer, 189-pounder Maurice Swaringen and heavyweight Kenny Brown.

n

SALISBURY:The Hornets have 13 of their wrestlers in the regionals, and three got No. 1 seeds in the 2A regionals.

James Hobson (130 pounds), Bobby Rhodes (160) and Joseph Walker (189) all got top billing in their respective weight classes.

“I’m proud of those guys, they worked real hard,” Salisbury coach Durwood Bynum said. “What you put into it is what you get.”

Other Salisbury wrestlers competing on Friday and Saturday are: Zach Koontz, Kyle Butler, Jaron Cathcart, John Demitraszek, Thomas Eldridge, Brian Clark, Paul Kluttz, Josh Seastedt, Matt Russ and Jamar Hoke.

n

WEST ROWAN: Kyle Riddenhour leads the way for the Falcons, who have five wrestlers seeded in the top seven of the 3A Midwestern Regionals, which will be held at Mooresville on late Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Riddenhour, seeded first in the 103-pound weight class, gets a first-round bye.

Joel Hopler is seeded third for West Rowan, and the Falcons have three wrestlers tabbed as the seventh seeds: 125-pounder Brent Panther, 130-pounder Jeremy Connor and 140-pounder Brandon McCarty.

n

David Shaw will be covering the 3A regionals in Mooresville on Saturday for the Post.
