Sports briefs: Coleton Boone wins AAU wrestling gold

RALEIGH — Rowan youngster Coleton Boone won the gold medal in the 9-&-under division for 75-80 pound wrestlers in the AAU Elementary School Nationals wrestling tournament held on Feb. 8 at the State Fair Grounds.

Boone took the final match — his third of the day — by a 4-0 decision.

Rowan’s Chandler Johnson also competed, along with 300 youngsters from across the United States and Canada.

  • Catawba softball wins

Catawba College opened its 2002 softball season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount Olive on Tuesday.

Catawba rallied for a 6-3 win in the opener, then took a 3-2 decision in the second game. Megan Wilson threw five innings of no-hit ball in the second game.

  • North Hills hoops sweeps

North Hills swept Cramerton Christian on Tuesday. The boys, led by Kirk Steiner’s 25 points and Josh Hines’ 16, won 77-54.

The girls, led by Lindsey Pullen’s 20 points, beat Cramerton 47-39 to finish first in league play. Caroline Cohen and Hollie Holder each had 12.

North Hills will host the playoffs starting Friday at 4:30 p.m.

  • Knox girls top China Grove

The Knox Middle eighth grade girls beat China Grove 45-23 behind 16 points from Erica Imes, 14 from Ashley Watkins and 13 from Saybah Sammy.

Tiffany Thomas led China Grove with 15 points.

  • Catawba baseball falls

LAURINBURG — Catawba’s baseball team lost 5-3 at St. Andrews on Tuesday.

Matt Smith led Catawba (1-1) with a 3-for-4 effort. He knocked in two runs. Zach Snyder (0-1) took the loss.

  • Livingstone hoops swept

WINSTON-SALEM — Livingstone’s basketball teams fell to Winston-Salem State on Tuesday night.

Livingstone’s men (5-20) fell to the Rams 85-64 despite 19 points by Jerome LaGrange.

WSSU’s women rolled 76-64. LC (5-17) was led by Robyn Wright’s 22 points.
