Dr. Robert V. Bowman

The funeral will be Saturday for Dr. Robert V. Bowman, 80, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Transitional Health Services,Kannapolis.

Born Nov. 21, 1921, in Cranford County, Ohio, Dr. Bowman was a son of the late Foy M. and Lola Moore Bowman. He was a graduate of Bryan High School, Bryan, Ohio; University of Toledo, Ohio; and Ohio State University Dental School.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Medical Corps during World War II and in the Dental Corps during the Korean War.

He practiced dentistry in Swanton, Ohio, for 39 years, retiring in 1987. He was on the Swanton Board of Education for 16 years; past president of Ohio School Board Association; a member of Scottish Rite of Toledo, Ohio, and Charlotte; member of Zenobia Shrine, Toledo, Ohio; Rowan Shrine Club; Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge and Salisbury Elk’s Lodge. A former member of Salisbury Civitan Club, he helped found the Swanton, Ohio, Rescue EMS.

In 1974, he received the Golden Deeds Award from Swanton, Ohio, Exchange Club. He was past president of the Salisbury AARP chapter.

A member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, he sang in the Sanctuary Choir.

Survivors include wife Maxine McDonald Bowman, whom he married Sept. 22, 1946; son Byron Bowman, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and daughter Tae Marie Bowman, St. Mary’s City, Md.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Robert M. Lewis, pastor, and Dr. Randall Kirby, associate pastor. Burial, 2 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, VA Medical Center, Salisbury. Masonic rites by Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge.

Visitation: At the church after the memorial service on Saturday.

Ruby McLester Eudy

LBEMARLE — Ruby Ramerle McLester Eudy, 85, 33420 Old Salisbury Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2002) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Palestine Cemetery.

Visitation:12-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Edna Ramerle Hill, 3800 Spring Drive, Midland.

 

Loretta K. Everhart

LEXINGTON — Loretta Katen Everhart, 62, Franklin Street, died Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2002) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Spruce Street Baptist Church. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Melody Harvey, 304 Homewood Lane, Lexington.

Edna I. Goodman

ROCKWELL — Edna Isenhour Goodman, 83, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Thomas F. Hudson

The funeral will be Friday for Thomas Franklin Hudson, 76, 104 Wellington Drive, who died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 9, 1925, in Salisbury, Mr. Hudson was a son of the late James Giles and Annie Belle Cruse Hudson. He graduated from the Salisbury city schools and attended Catawba College and North Carolina State University.

During World War II, he served in combat in France and Germany as radio operator for the battalion commander of the 63rd Infantry Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

A partner with Hudson and Almond Surveying, Mapping, and Engineering Co., he was a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576 and was a past master of the lodge. He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies, Rowan County Shrine Club, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and a former member and president of Rowan Civitan Club.

A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, he was on the administrative board. He was a member of Golden Rule Sunday school class and secretary of the class for many years.

Survivors include wife Martha Dell Purvis Hudson; son John T. Hudson, Salisbury; daughters Belle “Bee” H. Piper, Greensboro, Laura H. Kesler, Greenville, and Martha “Dell” H. Strayhorn, Raleigh; sister Ann Almond, Salisbury; and seven grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 12 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L.Griffis. Burial, 11:30 a.m. Friday at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Shelley W. Lefler

Shelley Winsdale Lefler, 82, 304 St. Paul’s Church Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at his home after six months of declining health and three days of serious illness.

Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Cornelius, Mr. Lefler, a son of the late Lonnie A. and Mae Baxter Lefler, was educated in the Iredell County schools.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for five years. He was first sergeant in the 534th Company Amphibian Engineers. He received numerous awards including: Good Conduct, Victory, Asiatic Pacific Campaign and American Defense Service medals; two Bronze Stars; and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star. He participated in battles and campaigns in New Guinea, Morotai Island and Luzen, Philippines.

Retired from REA Express, he was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks.

A member and deacon of Faith Baptist Church, he was president of the brotherhood, an R.A. leader and Sunday school teacher, and sang in the choir.

He was a charter member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and a former member of Faith Civitan Club.

Survivors include wife Hazel Curran Lefler, whom he married Jan. 4, 1943; sons S. Dale Lefler, Rockwell, and Barry Lefler, Fuquay-Varina; daughter Karen L. Pinyan, Salisbury; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles R. “Chuck” Brawley, pastor, and a nephew, the Rev. Ronnie Parker, pastor, Folkstone Baptist Church, Folkstone. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Helen Bostian Llewellyn, 70, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at her home.

Edward Erwin Miller, 94, 1130 Dunn’s Mountain Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Marvin Luther Morris

NEW LONDON — Marvin Luther Morris, 79, 37759 Mountain Creek Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2002) at his home.

Born March 4, 1922, in Hoke County, Mr. Morris was a son of the late Walter C. and Lillie Hatley Morris. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a charter member of the World War II Society.

Retired from Fieldcrest Cannon, he was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and Stanly Masonic Lodge 348.

Survivors include wife Jennie Lee Gilliam Morris; sons Todd Morris, Badin, and Mark Morris, New London; daughter Rebecca “Becky” Hollis, New London; brother Wyman Morris, Albemarle; sister Hattie Furr, New London; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Prospect Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rick Miller, the Rev. Bill Morrow and the Rev. Todd Lambert. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

James ‘Steve’ Mundy

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for James Stephen “Steve” Mundy, 55, formerly of 2208 Moose Road, who died Saturday (Feb. 9, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 11, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Mundy was a son of the late James Coleman and Allene Swink Mundy. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Retired due to disability from Wachenhut Security, he worked at Phillip Morris Inc. He was a member of the 6th N.C. Regiment of the Continental Line of the Revolutionary War Re-enactment Organization.

Survivors include sons Kenny Mundy, Washington, and Richard Meyer Mundy, China Grove; sisters Linda White, Kannapolis, and Carol Goe, Woodbridge, Va.; and brother John Michael Mundy, China Grove.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by Commander Jim Daniels and the Rev. Wayne Sipe. Graveside honors conducted by the 6th N.C. Regiment Team.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Linda White, 2210 Moose Road.

Beulah ‘Boots’ Murphy

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Friday for Beulah “Boots” Helms Murphy, 89, formerly of 11201 Old Concord Road, who died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare, Salisbury, after a year of declining health.

Born Aug. 23, 1912, in Union County, Mrs. Murphy, a daughter of the late Samuel Wilson and Anna Helms, was a resident of the Kannapolis area since 1935. A Baptist, she retired after many years from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 sheet department.

Survivors include husband Alfred R. Murphy; daughter Bessie Absher, Rockwell; brother Howard Helms, Charlotte; sisters Minnie Miller, Kannapolis, and Hattie Furr, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Gene Frady and the Rev. Dr. Harry Ferguson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Bessie Absher, 11195 Old Concord Road.

MOCKSVILLE — Bessie Sechrest, 68, Deadmon Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Shirley Stubbs Smith

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Friday for Shirley Stubbs Smith, 52, 267 Holly Grove Lutheran Church Road, who died Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born April 19, 1949, in Salisbury, Mrs. Smith, a daughter of the late Lemmie and Eugenia Farmer Stubbs, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A healthcare worker at Fairfield Home Care, she was employed on the cleanup crew at PPG.

A son, Tracy Lyerly, died in 1996.

Survivors include brother Tommy Stubbs, Albemarle; sister Nellie Allmon, China Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bill Roberts.

Harry Edward Starnes

CHINA GROVE — Harry Edward Starnes, 94, 5645 W. N.C. Hwy. 152, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Mary Rose Starr

ROCKWELL — Mary Rose Starr, 79, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born April 9, 1922, in Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. Starr, a daughter of the late Herbert W. and Harriett Curling Rose, was educated in the Virginia schools. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Starr was a member of the TLC Group of Powles Funeral Home and was a member and past president of the Young at Heart Club. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of WELCA.

Her husband, Harry Arnold Starr, died July 16, 1989.

Survivors include sons Dr. Harry A. Starr Jr., Rockwell, Larry H. Starr, Knightdale, and Robert M. Starr, Sanford; brothers George Rose, Harrisonburg, Va., and Robert Rose, Portsmouth, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor. The TLC Group of Powles Funeral Home will be seated as a group. Burial, National Cemetery, Railroad Avenue, Salisbury.
