Robert Cockerl
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Robert Cockerl, 81, 115 Peninsula Blvd., died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at his home following a prolonged illness.
Born March 9, 1920, in Chester, S.C., Mr. Cockerl was a son of the late Bertha and Henry Cockerl. He received his GED in 1964 after dropping out of school in the third grade.
He worked for Duke Power Co. in Salisbury, N.C., for 25 years before moving in 1964 and was a pastor with no church home.
A World War II veteran, he was honored with the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lillie Corpening, and children Bertha, Calvin and Ronald Cockerl.
Survivors include sons Avery Cockerl, Spencer, N.C., and Robert Cockerl Jr., Salisbury, N.C.; daughter Andrea Cockerl, East Meadow, N.Y.; brothers Henry Cockerl, Jamaica, N.Y., James Cockerl, Salisbury, N.C., Nathan Cockerl, Bakersfield, Calif., and David Cockerl, Lynbrook, N.Y.; sisters Marie Laidley, Los Angeles, and Lizzie Chapman, Greensboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Feb. 1, followed by burial in Calverton National Cemetery in New York. Carl C. Burnett Funeral Home was in charge.

LEXINGTON — Robert “Bob” Aldean Gilchrist, 80, 516 Jim BellRoad, died Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2002) at his home.

Effie F. Holbrook
LINWOOD — Effie Faye Holbrook, 62, Clark Road, died Monday (Feb. 4, 2002)at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born July 26, 1939, in Chatham County, Mrs. Holbrook was a daughter of the late Conley Edgar and Hattie Halbrook Combs. She was a homemaker and a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
A son,Conley Edgar Holbrook, preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband John Page Holbrook; sons Randy Page Holbrook, Linwood, and Archie Glenn Holbrook, Winston-Salem; daughters Bonnie Sue Ingram, Salisbury, and Donna Faye Cooper, Lexington; brothers Fonza Combs, Apex, Jess Combs, Manassas, Va., and Clallan Combs, Lexington; sisters Dessie Tysinger, Southmont, Lessie Moody, Mocksville, Tessie Moody, Wake Forest, and Emma Tysinger, Reeds; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 2 today, Lakeview Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Ester. Burial, church cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the home of Randy Holbrook on Rabon Road.

Donna Sue Moore
CHINA GROVE — Donna Sue Moore, 35, 619 Hwy. 29 N., died Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2002) at her home.
Born Feb. 1, 1967, in Cabarrus County, Miss Moore was a daughter of the late Cletus and Nancy Pearline Cassidy Moore. She was educated in the Cabarrus County schools.
A homemaker, she attended Universal House of Prayer.
Survivors include brothers Donnie Moore and Cletus Moore Jr., both of Kannapolis, and James Moore, Coco Beach, Fla.; and sister Rhonda Chandler, Coco Beach, Fla.
Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Samuel Whittington. Burial, Sunset Cemetery.
Visitation: 3-4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Thora ‘Cootie’ Teague
KANNAPOLIS — Thora “Cootie” Teague, 92, formerly of 618 Centergrove Road, died Monday (Feb. 4, 2002) at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Center, Huntersville.
Born Dec. 17, 1909, in Cherokee County, S.C., Miss Teague was a daughter of the late Clifford C. and Lillie Spencer Teague. She retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 sheet department in 1973 and was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.
Survivors include sisters Rosa Smith and Sybil Canup, both of Charlotte, and R.E. Reynolds, Iron Station.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert D. Howard. Burial, Newell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlotte.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Stephen Wilcox
Burial will be Sunday for Stephen Ray Wilcox, 49, New York City, who died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) as a result of a double drowning at his upstate New York home in Gardiner, N.Y.
Born Nov. 25, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas, Mr. Wilcox was a son of Edith Caldwell Wilcox Purdy-Horn of Cool Springs, Cleveland, and the late Glen Morgan Wilcox.
He graduated from the fine arts program at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. A former flight attendant with Trans American Airline, he wrote “Not for Tourists” travel guide for business people. He was also a freelance graphic artist and a photographer.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include brothers Roy Douglas Wilcox, Knoxville,Tenn., Gary Alan Wilcox, Statesville; sister Diane Wilcox Strutz, Knoxville,Tenn.; stepfather Robert E. Horn, Cool Springs; stepbrothers Houston Horn, Raleigh, and Richard Smirch, Burbank, Calif.; and stepmother Mary S. Wilcox, Burbank, Calif.
A service was held Jan. 30, at Copeland Funeral Home, New Paltz, N.Y.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday,Feb. 10, Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery, Cool Springs, Cooleemee. Memorial service immediately after graveside service. The Rev. John Milholland will officiate.
Visitation: The family will receive friends after the service.

Tennette Wilkerson
GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Thursday for Aggrent Tennette Robertson Wilkerson, 55, 235 Aggrey Ave., who died Sunday (Feb. 3, 2002)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born April 24, 1946, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Wilkerson, a daughter of the late Lonnie Robertson and Annie Martin Robertson Withers, was a 1963 graduate of J.C. Price High School, Salisbury. She was employed in the food service department at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury.
A member of White Rock AME Zion Church, she was a lifelong member, consecrated deaconess, a preacher at the church, leader of leaders and class leader; and was a member of Women’s and Overseas Mission, stewardess board, Senior and Gospel choirs, board of Christian Education; and was assistant adult Sunday school teacher and on the lay council and life members council. She was also a member of the Community Development Club and Salisbury District Ministerial Alliance.
Survivors include husband Leon Wilkerson; daughter Cassandra W. Crenshaw, Salisbury; brothers Homer Robertson and Gary Withers, both of Salisbury, Ephirim Withers, Atlanta, Ga., and Graline Withers, China Grove; sisters Ora Pinckney, Granite Quarry, Vonnie McCullough, Joyce Lawson, Arwilda Barton, Ollie Cruse and Ivery Jackson, all of Salisbury; and two grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, White Rock AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. William Gullick and the Rev. Herbert Warren. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Ruth Sneed Willis
KANNAPOLIS — Ruth Sneed Willis, 87, 6795 N. Turner Drive, died Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2002) at her home after four years of declining health.
Born March 3, 1914, in Buncombe County, Mrs. Willis was a daughter of the late Shelby and Laura Payne Sneed. She was a homemaker.
A resident of Black Mountain for many years, she later lived in Jacksonville Beach,Fla., and eventually returned to Kannapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milt Willis, and a son, Robert Noblitt.
Survivors include six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Mountain View Memorial Park, Black Mountain.
Visitation: None.
