James Edward “George” Hunter, 66, 67 W. 126th St., New York, N.Y., died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Harlem Hospital Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1935, in Rowan County, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Robert and Nora Gilliam Hunter.
Educated at Dunbar High School, East Spencer, he was a boutique salesman.

Ruby Call McDaniel
MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Ruby Hayden Call McDaniel, 84, formerly of U.S. Highway 601 South, who died Sunday (Feb. 3, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Sept. 10, 1917, in Davie County, Mrs. McDaniel was a daughter of the late Cora Phelps and Taylor Call. She graduated from Smith Grove High School and had worked at Heffner’s Land of Food.
She was a member of Cooleemee Senior Citizens and Liberty United Methodist Church, its choir and United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Seth McDaniel, and by a son, Richard “Dickie” McDaniel, both in 1982.
Survivors include daughters Patricia Cranfill, Advance, Beverly Collins, Spencer, Joyce Dutch and Linda Walls, both of Faith, and Brenda File, Salisbury; brothers Ralph and Charles Call, both of Mocksville, Graham Call, Graham, and Clarence Call, Mocksville; sister Edna

KANNAPOLIS — Edward Caldwell Overcash, 81, 1049 Quailwoods Court, died Monday (Feb. 4, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a serious illness of two months.
Born June 4, 1920, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Overcash was a son of the late Roy Edward and Edith Linn
Overcash.
He was owner-operator of Evergreen Dairy until his retirement and a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder and deacon. He was a charter member of the Cabarrus County Planning Board.

Helen Troutman Safrit, 86, died Monday (Feb. 4, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 17, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was a daughter of the late Roy T. Troutman and Carrie
Eddleman. She worked at Norman’s of Salisbury as a seamstress.

Born April 27, 1948, in Forsyth County, Mr. Solomon was a son of Vardell Solomon, Winston-Salem, and the late Rosa Carson Solomon.
Educated at Salisbury High School, he was a cook at Beatties Restaurant.

Born May 24, 1932, in Tazewell County, Va., Mr. Stiff was a son of the late Eugene and Mary Alice Brumley Stiff.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired from A.K. Steel Co., Ashland, Ky.

George Suwalski
SPENCER — George W. Suwalski, 78, Spencer, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1923, in Chicago, he was a son of the late Anna Kunath and Ignatius John
Suwalski. He attended the University of Chicago and retired as a civilian logistics officer with the United States Department of Defense.
He was past president of the Citizens for Historic Spencer and served on several advisory boards and committees for the town of Spencer. He was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and a Catholic.
Survivors include wife Marie Cain Suwalski; sons George and James Suwalski, both of Chicago; daughter Linda S.
Kaberline, Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery at the
W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center.

Luther I. Warren, 62, Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002) at the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1939, in Davie County, he was a son of the late Eloise Mann Coleman and Luther Warren.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
