Rollins ‘Dock’ Adams

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral is today for Rollins R. “Dock” Adams, 91, 205 Heinz Ave., who died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002) at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Born June 11, 1910, in Cherokee County, Mr. Adams was a son of the late Elwood and Hattie Lunsford Adams. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

A member of the DAV, he retired from Cannon Mills plant 4.

His wife, Parrie Beatrice Adams, died in May 1994.

Survivors include daughter Martha Erwin, Kannapolis; sister Mattie O’Berry, Texas; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 today, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rick Chaballa. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: Noon to 1 today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Heintz Avenue.

 

Inez Compton

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral is today for Inez Arnold Compton, 87, Caremore Retirement Center, who died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two months of serious illness.

Born Dec. 16, 1914, in Gordon County, Ga., Mrs. Compton was a daughter of the late John and Arie Greenway Arnold. She retired as a stretcher from Cannon Mills after 40 years.

Her husband, Randolph “Doc” M.Compton, died in 1954. A son, R. Glenn Compton, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Phyllis C. Strickland, Kannapolis; other son H. David Compton, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 today, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Willie Rash. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 today at the funeral home.

 

Lanas T. Cooke

CONCORD — The funeral will be Sunday for Lanas Tucker Rodgers Cooke, 215 Goodman Circle, who died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Mrs. Cooke, a daughter of the late Martin and Maude Hartsell Tucker, was born in Stanly County. A beautician, she formerly owned and operated Circle Beauty Shop.

She was an active member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church and director of Helping Hands Ministry in Landis.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Harvey Rodgers; her second husband, Conred Ray Cooke; a daughter, Sherry Rodgers Smith; and a son, William Barry Rodgers.

Survivors include stepdaughter Sandra Cooke Craft, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. David Myers and the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3:15 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

William Honeycutt

KANNAPOLIS – William Floyd Honeycutt, 85, of 501 Terrace Drive, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2002) at Northeast Medical Center.

Services are incomplete at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home.

 

Reaby W. Nantz

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral is today for Martha Reaby Walter Nantz, 96, formerly of Rainbow Drive, who died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002) at Universal Healthcare, Concord.

Born Oct. 28, 1905, in Rowan County, Mrs. Nantz, a daughter of the late George C. and Martha Correll Walter, was a lifetime member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church.

She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 sheet department after 43 years.

Her husband, Russell F. Nantz, died Sept. 26, 1957.

Survivors include daughters Mary Lee Towell, Charlotte, and Eva Mae Fortner, Kannapolis; sister Irene Walter, China Grove; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

Services: 3 today, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles B. MacMurphy. Burial, Mount Moriah Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

 

Reice S. Gatton Sr.

NORFOLK, Va. — Reice S. Gatton Sr., 86, formerly of 2207 Brantley Road, Kannapolis, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002), at Lake Taylor Hospital.

Born Sept. 11, 1915, in Davie County, Mr. Gatton was a son of the late James Louico and Minnie Jackson Gatton. He was formerly employed by General Motors of Indianapolis, Ind. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Kannapolis.

His wife, Viola Little Gatton, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Lona Liosatos, Virginia Beach, Va., Martha Shannon, Cape May, N.J., and Gail Mase, Coral Gables, Fla.; son Reice S. Gatton Jr., Norfolk Va.; sisters Evelyn Sloop and Martha Austin, both of Kannapolis, and Edna Edwards, Pittsboro; brother Max Gatton, Kannapolis; stepdaughters Betty Benson and Nancy Yates, Kannapolis; stepson George Ingram, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

James “George” Hunter

NEW YORK — James Edward “George” Hunter, 66, 67 126th St., Apt. 7, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002), at Harlem Hospital.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Barbara Jean Cleveland, 44 N. Cedar St., Salisbury. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

William Harold Lentz

William Harold Lentz, 85, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 31, 2002), at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born April 7, 1916, in Salisbury, Mr. Lentz was the son of the late William Lindsey Lentz and Etta Crook. Educated in Rowan County Schools, he retired from Southern Railways after more than 30 years as a clerk. He was an avid gardner.

Son Eddie Paul Lentz died Jan. 1, 2000.

Survivors include wife Opal Webster Lentz, Salisbury; sister Francis Bradshaw, Salisbury; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 today, Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Chuck Brawley and Jerry Bodford. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:10-11 today, Faith Baptist Church.

Howard D. Solomon

Howard Dwain Solomon, 43, 903 E. LaFayette St., died Friday (Feb. 1, 2002), at home. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Berniece B. Temple

LEXINGTON — Berniece Lea Brady Temple, 85, of Sunbridge of Lexington, formerly of Temple Street, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2002).

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, First Alliance Church, conducted by the Rev. John Brokopp. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter, Linda Coppley, 244 Bent Creek Drive.
