Joe Blackwelder
KANNAPOLIS — Joseph “Joe” Brown Blackwelder, 57, 1400 Oakwood Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at his home.
Born June 16, 1944, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Blackwelder was son of Helen Shue Blackwelder of Kannapolis and the late J.V. Blackwelder.
He worked for Lucent Technologies Inc. for 37 years. He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Paul Berrier Sunday School Class and also was involved with the church sound system.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Carol Anne Mooney Blackwelder; daughters Jill B. Trott, Concord, and Julie Kasak, Huntersville; son Jon Blackwelder, Charlotte; and eight grandchildren.
Services: 3:30 p.m. Monday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and the Rev. Pat Purdy. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Essie M. Blake
GASTONIA — Essie Mize Blake, 84, formerly of Mountain Road, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Century Care of Gastonia.
Survivors include son Wayne Blake of Salisbury.

Paul D. Boger
The funeral will be Monday for Paul Daniel Boger, 86, who died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Boger was a son of the late Martin Luther and Emma Magdalene Miller Boger. He attended Cabarrus County Schools and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.
Mr. Boger was a retired production manager for Carolina Southern Processing in Gastonia. He belonged to St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, its adult Sunday School class, the Men’s Brotherhood and was named Elder Emeritus of the church consistory.
Mr. Boger also belonged to the Salisbury Civitan Club, VFW Post 3006, Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, Granite Quarry Senior Citizens and was a former member and lieutenant governor for the Clover, S.C., Optimist Club.
His wife, Ufah Bailey Boger, preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1994.
Survivors include son Paul D. Boger Jr., Clover, S.C.; daughter Martha Shrewsbury, Odd, W.Va.; sisters Maude Hill, Gold Hill, and Elsie Shaver, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

MOORESVILLE — Mary Catherine Sigmon Newton, 73, died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at her residence.

Don Phillips
KANNAPOLIS — Edgar Donald “Don” Phillips, 69, formerly of 2137 Lane St., died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Avante of Concord.
Born June 4, 1932, in Wilkes County, Mr. Phillips was a son of Helen Harrington Phillips, Kannapolis, and the late Edgar Dewey Phillips. He was previously employed with Phillips Painting and Refinishing Co. He later worked for Kannapolis Construction Co.
He was a member of Pleasant Avenue Baptist Church, where he was active in the senior citizens group. Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include sons Eddie Dean Phillips, Kannapolis, and Tony Phillips, Tennessee; and sisters Dorothy P. Ragan, Kannapolis, and Doris P. Yates, Saratoga.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan and the Rev. John Jones. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Annie Mary Wilson
Annie Mary Robinson Wilson, 75, 1101 Laurel St., died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a serious illness of 18 days.
Born May 18, 1926, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Willie and Lessie Corpening Robinson. She graduated from Granite Quarry High School and was a weaver at Fieldcrest Cannon.
She belonged to Antioch Baptist Church in Granite Quarry, where she was a Sunday School teacher, choir member and former usher.
Her son, Chalmers Wilson Jr., died in September 1975.
Survivors include her husband, Chalmers Wilson of Salisbury.
Services: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Antioch Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lewis Turner, pastor. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery, Salisbury.
Visitation: Noon Tuesday, Antioch Baptist Church.
