The title of this piece should be, “Thank you, Charlie Brown.”
The recent terrorist attack was a devastating event that affected all of our lives in this month of September 2001. Much publicity reveals how kind and concerned people have been to each other because of it and the tremendous loss it wrought.
As I approached my home this past weekend and saw my neighbor in his yard, I realized that it hasn’t taken a disaster of any kind for him and his family to be friendly, caring and helpful. His random acts of kindness prompt me to be aware of several people that I’ve met here in Salisbury whose hearts are naturally kind. So now, in shadows of reflection — between more and more terrorist-related TV accounts — I think about the kindness of Von Poston, John Schuler, Joan Zimmerman, Eddie and Julie Chamberlain, Chi Chi Leazer — but I especially want to thank you, Charlie Brown.
Let us all be grateful when we find that it doesn’t take a disaster to be friendly, helpful, caring and kind to one another. In my town, it simply doesn’t take a catastrophe.
