Jay Barbee

CHINA GROVE — Jay Edward Barbee, 70, 143 Third Ave., died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 18, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Barbee was a son of the late Benjamin Greer and Thelma Spears Barbee.

Educated in Rowan County, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from China Grove Textiles. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Son Jay Edward Barbee Jr. died June 21, 1985.

Survivors include son Jeffrey Barbee, Kannapolis; sister Nina Swicegood, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service, 3 p.m. Thursday, West Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Larry Beaver, pastor of Main Street Baptist Church. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 2-2:45 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Allie Boyd

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Allie Dalton Boyd, 91, 2607 Earle St., who died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Big Elm Nursing Home.

Born May 19, 1910, in Carroll County, Va., Mrs. Boyd was a daughter of the late Ruben and Mary Hendrix Dalton. She retired from the No. 3 Spinning Room at Cannon Mills Plant 1.

She was preceded in death by husband Isaac Marion Boyd, son David Lee Thomas, daughter Dorothy Elswick and a great-great-grandchild.

Survivors include daughters Mildred Galloway, Rosman, and Ellen Henry, Polkton; son Lundy Elswick, Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. David V. Shoemake. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

 

Diane Cureton

Diane Montgomery Cureton, 54, 120 Titan Drive, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at her home after a serious illness of several months.

Born Sept. 17, 1947, in Rowan County, Mrs. Cureton was a daughter of Joseph Houpe of Woodleaf and Evelyn Montgomery Lytle of Philadelphia, Pa.

A graduate of R.A. Clement High School in Cleveland and Carter Beauty School in Philadelphia, she retired from the Hefner VA Medical Center. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Pastor’s Aide and Faithful Workers Missionaries.

Daughter Tonya Knox died on Aug. 24, 2000.

Survivors include brother William Lytle, Woodleaf; half brothers Joe Houpe, Statesville, and Larry Houpe, Woodleaf; sister Stacy Tidwell, Newport News, Va.; half sister Phyllis Houpe, Kannapolis; and one granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Stowe, pastor. Burial, Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery, Woodleaf.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Ellen Peggy Gardner

The funeral will be Thursday for Ellen Peggy Gardner, 47, 203 D Ave., who died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at her home.

Born March 23, 1954, in Iredell County, Ms. Gardner was a daughter of Dorothy Boyd Gardner of the home and the late Ceolia Gardner. She graduated from public schools in Brooklyn, N.Y., and from Brooklyn Community College.

She was a nurse’s assistant at Brian Center Health &Rehabilitation and attended Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by son Andre Gardner, Bronx, N.Y.; daughters Shawonda and Princess Gardner, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers Marvin Donnell, Ricky and Anthony Gardner, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Derick Gardner, Salisbury; sisters Yvonne Thomas and Gloria Ford, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Patricia Gardner, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters, conducted by the Rev. D.S. Houston, pastor, and the Rev. Joann Fitzgerald. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Delsie Herrin Lambert

ALBEMARLE — Delsie Herrin Lambert, 91, 1826 W. Main St., died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on West Main Street.

 

George G. McElveen

MOORESVILLE — George Gamel McElveen, 80, Glenwood Drive, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1920, in Waycross, Ga., Mr. McElveen was a son of the late Alec L. and Bessie Thomas McElveen. He was raised in Salisbury, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired as a salesman for Retreading Equipment Co., Charlotte.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he taught the Men’s J.W. Jones Bible Class for many years and was a lay leader and member of the building and finance committees and the administrative board. He was also a youth counselor and president of the United Methodist Men.

He was preceded in death by wife Sue Poole McElveen and son George G. McElveen Jr.

Survivors include son Ronald D. McElveen, Mooresville; daughters Brenda M. Troutman, Concord, Elaine M. Ballard and Christa M. Owens, both of Mooresville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip DeBerry Jr. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Frances Reid

KANNAPOLIS — Frances Bowers Krimminger Reid, 88, Five Oaks Nursing Center, formerly of Jackson Street, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at the center. She had been in declining health several years and seriously ill two weeks.

Born May 18, 1913, in Thomasville, Mrs. Reid was a daughter of the late Julian Oscar and Cora Cates Bowers. She graduated from J.W. Cannon High School in 1932 and retired from Cannon Mills Co. She had been a member of the Kannapolis First Baptist Church since 1927.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde W. Krimminger, and her second husband, Ernest Leroy Reid.

Survivors include brother Oscar E. Bowers, Kannapolis.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, graveside, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dean Mitchem.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Annie Walters Taylor

EMERALD ISLE — Annie “Madge” Walters Taylor, 84, 120 Myrtle St., died July 24, 2001, at her home.

A native of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of the late Sye Johnson Walters and Sarah Allison Roof Walters.

She was a 1934 graduate of Boyden High School, Salisbury, and a lifelong member of Grove Park Baptist Church, Burlington, where she had been a former resident.

Her husband, Marvin Eunice Taylor, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Sue Taylor Hanford, Emerald Isle, and Kathy Taylor Hunt, Oxford; sister Virginia Flowe Peeler, Salisbury; brothers Charlie Robertson Walters and Jack Douglas Walters, both of Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted July 26 in Burlington, followed by burial in Alamance Memorial Park.
