Wilford Orman Brown
Wilford Orman Brown, 87, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 10, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late David Solomon and Erma Fisher Brown. He graduated from Granite Quarry High School and was a farmer and land developer.
A lifelong and active member of Christiana Lutheran Church, he had been Sunday school superintendent, a Sunday school teacher and council member. He was also a member of Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657 in Rockwell, Salisbury York-Rite and Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte.
His wife, Zelia Lingle Brown, died Oct. 11, 1996.
Survivors include son Marcus W. Brown, Salisbury, and one grandchild.
Services: 4 p.m. today, graveside, Christiana Lutheran Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Carl Haynes, pastor.

Clarence Avery Davis
lOORESVILLE — Clarence Avery Davis, 79, Rhinehardt Road, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare.
Born May 27, 1922, in Iredell County, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Thomas H. and Vera Williams Davis. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a retired turbo operator with Templon Mills and was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Lyles Davis, whom he married June 28, 1941; step-mother Mary B. Davis, Mount Ulla; son Mike Davis, Mooresville; daughter Dianne Humphrey, Mooresville; brothers Tom Davis Jr., Salisbury, and Dale Davis, Mount Ulla; sisters Sybil Angelley, Mount Ulla, and Marcia Winters, Statesville; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside service, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Glenwood Memorial Park, followed by 11 a.m. memorial service, Broad Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Macdonald.

Lawerance Grace
Lawerance “Larry” Grace, 52, 505 W. Council St., died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) at his home after a serious illness.
Born Jan. 3, 1949, in Gulfport, Miss., Mr. Grace was a son of the late Frank and Louana Ramsey Grace. A graduate of 33rd Street High School in Gulfport, he was last employed by Gamewell Manufacturing.
He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and a former member of the Zodiac Club and Western Star Lodge No. 9.
Survivors include wife Betty Lowery Grace; son Caribe Bailey, Camden, N.J.; stepson Phillip Thompson, Fort Wayne, Ind.; foster son Jermar Holt, Salisbury; daughters Tonia Bailey, Camden, N.J., and Deyonae Grace, of the home; step-daughter Venita McKee, Concord; brothers Edward and Milton Grace, both of San Francisco, Calif., Raymond, Boston and Paul Grace, all of Gulfport, Miss., Robert and Charles Grace, both of Oakland, Calif., and Richard Grace, Camden, N.J.; sisters Audrey Moore and Jackie Dixon, both of Gulfport, Miss., and Christina Smith, Biloxi, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Odelia Trexler Lyerly
Odelia Trexler Lyerly, 83, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare.
Born Nov. 5, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lyerly was a daughter of the late Glenn V. and Beulah Eagle Trexler. She was a 1937 graduate of Rockwell High School and a homemaker who, in her earlier years, was a knitter at Heist-McCain Hosiery Mills.
She was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church, WELCA Group and the Granite Quarry Golden Age Club.
Survivors include husband Harry S. Lyerly, whom she married March 6, 1942; son Larry D. Lyerly, Gold Hill; daughter Brenda Lyerly Thomason, Gold Hill; brother Glenn V. Trexler Jr., Gold Hill; sister Mary Elizabeth Misenheimer, Gold Hill; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Christiana Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Haynes, pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial, church cemetery.

Virginia S. Miller
GREENSBORO — Virginia Daisy Simerson Miller, 79, died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) at Baptist Hospital.
Born in Churchland, Mrs. Miller worked with Byrd’s Food Market in Archdale for many years. In 1960, she was working as a waitress at Woolworth when black students staged their first sit-in at the segregated lunch counter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edgar Alexander Miller.
Survivors include daughters Gay M. Stevens, High Point, and Victoria “Vickie” Walker, New Bern; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Herman T. Powell
CLEVELAND — Herman Tealum Powell, 89, Warp Road, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1911, in Iredell County, Mr. Powell was a son of the late Frank and Maude Hayes Powell.
A veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, he was a member of South River United Methodist Church, Woodleaf, and worked as a carpenter until he retired.
He was preceded in death by wife Alice Gwaltney Powell.
Survivors include son Gary Lee Powell, Richmond, Va.; brothers Gilmer Powell, Greensboro, and Kenneth Powell, Salisbury; sister Hazel Thornburg, Graham; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, South River United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bob Maclawhorn and the Rev. Shirley Jones. Burial, church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

Ollie Mae Upright
CHINA GROVE — Ollie Mae Upright, 93, 290 Madison Road, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at her home after a long illness.
Born Feb. 25, 1908, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Upright was a daughter of the late Robert and Emma Nelly Farrington Phillips.
Educated through the eighth grade, she was a member of Landis Baptist Church and retired from Cone Mills in Salisbury.
She was preceded in death by husband Henry Lee Upright and sons Lee UprightJr. and Jerry Max Upright.
Survivors include daughters Helen Ruth White, Taylorsville, Emma Joeleen Griffin, Kannapolis, and Sandra Fay Plyler, China Grove; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Yarbro
Kathryn Barnes Yarbro, 91, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at her home after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in Cooleemee, Mrs. Yarbro was a daughter of the late Henry Eugene and Geneva Ernestine Blalock Barnes.
Educated in the Cooleemee Schools, Wingate College and Hattiesburg (Miss.) Womans College, she taught a total of 36 years in Troutman, Woodleaf and Davenport, Fla.
She and her husband operated Yarbro Honey in Davenport, Fla. She also was a ham operator.
Mrs. Yarbro was a member of Enon Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Ella Sunday School Class. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee and Davenport Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as pianist and organist for many years.
She was a member of the North Carolina and Florida Retired Education Association.
Her husband, Lacy Thomas Yarbro, died on July 13, 1981.
Survivors include sister Janie Barnes Wise, Salisbury.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, minister of Enon Baptist Church. Burial, City Memorial Park.
