Helen Hoffman Blake
Helen Katherine Hoffman Blake, 94, of Salisbury, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after being in declining health.
Born Feb. 9, 1907, in Blacklick, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma Duvall Hoffman. She was educated in the Blacklick, Ohio, schools.
She retired from sales with Lazarus Department Store in Columbus, Ohio. She was a member of Neel Road Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Arden Blake, Jan. 23, 1981; daughter Lillian Blake Tucker, September, 1993; daughter Sharon Blake Kiser, June 30, 1987; and son Fredrick Arden Blake, July 3, 1992.
She is survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services: A memorial service will be held at 7 tonight at Neel Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry P. Wilkes, minister of the church. Burial will be at a later date.

Ruby Jane Cooper
NORWOOD—Ruby Jane Miller Cooper, 78, 425 Allenton St., died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Porter Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Linker, the Rev. Chris Wallace and the Rev. Fred Hopkins. Burial will be at Norview Gardens.
Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at Edwards Funeral Home.
Annie Hamilton
KANNAPOLIS—Annie Jackson Hamilton, 84, 1406 Todd Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.
Born November 28, 1916, in Anson County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Clayton and Sarah German Jackson. She was a retired employee of Atomic Oil Company.
A member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1942, Mrs. Hamilton was a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
She ws preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Lee Hamilton, and a son, Gerald Lee Hamilton.
Survivors include sons Larry Hamilton, Kannapolis, and Donald Thomas Hamilton, Charlotte; sister Billie Jackson Kiker, Peachland, NC; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services: 3:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tom Tucker and Dr. Dale Tanner. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 4 to 6 today at Lady’s Funeral Home.

Clarence Mayfield
Clarence AddisonMayfield, 97, of Salisbury, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 29, 1903, in Honea Path, S.C., he was the son of the late John Addison and Pauline Ashmore Mayfield. He was raised in the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, S.C. and graduated from the Greenwood, S.C.,schools and from Furman University.
He came to Salisbury as store manager for Montgomery Ward in 1930 and when they left town, became the owner and operator of Mayfield Furniture Co. for the next 40 years.
He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and on the Board of Maxwell-Chambers Trust.
He was a member and past president of Salisbury Kiwanis, who named him a George Hixon Fellow. He was also a member of Salisbury-Rowan Furniture Dealers Association and was active with the Gideon’s and Yoke Fellow Prison Ministry.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Dorothy Addison Mayfield, March 6, 1943; his first wife, Dorothy Mitchell Mayfield, Feb. 13, 1965; and his second wife, Rosalie Wiley Kizziah Mayfield, December 17, 1985.
Survivors include his son William G. Mayfield, Salisbury; daughter Dorothy M. Uhler, Bellmeade, NJ; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Lewis, minister. The Salisbury Kiwanis Club will sit as a group at the church.

Gideon “Gid” Miller
Gideon “Gid” Cleveland Miller, 81, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late James J. and Josephine Lyerly Miller. He was educated in the Rowan County Schools.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S.Navy.
He was the former operator of Fid’s Grill on East Innes Street and a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Leach Miller of the home, whom he married June 7, 1946.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Susan Miller Beeker, Salisbury; sister Ethel Miller Valley Foster, Salisbury; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services 3 p.m. Tuesday at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stan Champion, church pastor. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

James Owensby
MOORESVILLE—James Junior Owensby, 65, died unexpectedly Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center unexpectedly.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at the James C. Lyerly Chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Danny R. Stephenson, pastor of First Assembly of God. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park, Lexington.
Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence.
J.W. Rogers
KANNAPOLIS—John William “J.W.” Rogers, 75, Autumn Care Nursing Home in Salisbury and a former residen of North Walnut Street, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at Autumn Care.
Born June 2, 1926, in Florence County, SC, Mr. Rogers was the son of the late John Rogers and Irene Lee Rogers Murph.
He was retired from Cannon Mills after 39 years of service.
A member of White Park Baptist Church of Concord, he was also a member of Men’s Sunday School Class. He later attended Southside Baptist Church in Salisbury.
Mr. Rogers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1944 to 1947.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his step-father and a sister, Mary Murph.
Survivors include special friends Bill and Faith Bridges of Salisbury.
Services: A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at West Lawn Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. L.J.Mills. The body will remain at Lady’s Funeral Home until time for the service.

Elva Mae Smith
WINSTON-SALEM—Elva Mae Hodge Smith, 88, of Winston-Salem, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001).
Born May 11, 1931, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Calvin and Annie Agner Hodge.
She married Adrian D. Smith Sr. in 1931 and was a long-time member of Mt.Tabor United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and a grandson.
Survivors include son Adrian D. Smith Jr., Burlington; daughter Syliva S. Saylor, Atlantic Beach; four grandchildren;and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Kenneth Carter. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Rowan Memorial Gardens.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
