Larry G. Beck

LEXINGTON — Larry G. Beck, 58, West Fifth Avenue, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001), at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a two-week illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Alma Lee Crowell

ALBEMARLE — Alma Lee Hammill Crowell, 78, 1104 Belvedere Drive, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001), at home.

Survivors include sister Ruth H. Black, Gold Hill.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, First Lutheran Church. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

‘Judy’ Ludwig Doby

SPENCER — “Judy”Carol Ludwig Doby, 58, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001), at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Born March 26, 1943, in Rowan County, Mrs. Doby was the daughter of the late James E. and Carrie Cauble Ludwig. A 1961 graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury, she was a homemaker. She had retired, due to her health, from Rowan Regional Medical Center as a supervisor over Medicare-Medicaid. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Salisbury.

Survivors include husband Howard Harding Doby Jr., whom she married Dec. 19, 1971; son Chad H. Doby, of the home; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Brown, pastor, the Rev. Tony Fox, pastor of Rogers Park Baptist Church, and Brian Beaver. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Sunday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Frankie Lee Freeman

STATESVILLE — Frankie Lee Painter Freeman, 78, 169 Porter Road, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001), at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 18, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late William Franklin and Mary Lee Kepley Painter. She was a homemaker and a member of Broad Street Church of Christ.

Her husband, Marion Monroe Freeman, died June 27, 1989. She was also preceded in death by a son, Samuel Earl Freeman.

Survivors include daughters Rhonda Jane Bateman, Gladwin, Mich., and Janice Ann Steele, Statesville; brothers George Painter, Plano, Texas, and Giles Painter, Lincolnton; sisters Margarette Painter Hood and Jean Painter Gibble, both of Lexington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Corinth Church of Christ, conducted by Don Blackwell. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

William ‘Bill’ Hall

CHINA GROVE — William Henry “Bill” Hall, 68, 276 First Corriher St., died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001), at home.

Born May 6, 1933, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Hall was a son of the late Joe Allen and Esther Sain Hall. He was employed by Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 and later Plant 16 (Swink Plant) until his retirement.

Survivors include daughter Deborah Mullins, China Grove; son W.H. “Bill” Hall Jr., Salisbury; brother Allen Hall, Kannapolis; sisters Kathleen Merriman, Kannapolis, and Doris Leazer, Mooresville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dallas Bennett.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Freddie King

LEXINGTON — Freddie King, 59, Moore Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001), at home after a long illness.

Services:Graveside, 4 p.m. Sunday, Lexington City Cemetery.

James Owensby

MOORESVILLE — James Junior Owensby, 65, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001), at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Robert Alan Parks

CONCORD — Robert Alan Parks, 17, 364 Vance Drive N.E., died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001).

Born Dec. 18, 1983, in Concord, he was a son of Scott Keith Parks of Huntersville and Suzanne Ross Parks Bakeman of Concord. He worked at Bi-Lo and attended Mount Pleasant High School before transferring to Concord High School.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother Josh K. Parks, Huntersville; sisters Amanda Parks and Brooke Parks, both of Huntersville; paternal grandfather Keith Parks, Gastonia; and maternal grandparents Derry Ross, Raleigh, and Helen Ross, Pageland, S.C.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Smith. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Ernest ‘Jim’ Pierce

The funeral will be today for Ernest Caudell “Jim” Pierce, 88, Franklin community, who died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Pierce was a son of the late John Frank and Liza Gullett Pierce. He attended the Rowan County schools.

Retired from Cone Mills after 35 years, he was earlier employed by Erwin Mills, Cooleemee, for five years. He was an active member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, the Men’s Sunday School Class and the men’s group.

Survivors include wife Willie Mae Pope Pierce, whom he married Nov. 13, 1936; daughters Elizabeth Ann Pierce McCulloh, Salisbury, and Mary Jo Pierce Peacock, Mocksville; sister Flossie Pierce Ward, Woodleaf; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. Larry Summey, pastor, Franklin Presbyterian Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Virginia Ward Turner

The funeral will be Sunday for Virginia Ward Turner, 87, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born June 10, 1914, in Spencer, Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Nannie Kesler Ward. She was educated in the Spencer schools and was a 1931 graduate of Spencer High School.

A homemaker, she was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, Fidelis Sunday School Class and the Joy Club.

Her husband, Lee Roy Turner, died March 25, 1988.

Survivors include sons George L. “Sonny” Turner, Charlotte, and Larry W. and Lenn B. Turner, both of Salisbury; daughter Barbara T. Durrette, Salisbury; sister Ruth Ward Koontz, Spencer; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael E. Motley, pastor, and the Rev. David Blanton, pastor, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight,Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
