John Brawley Jr.

CHINA GROVE — John Franklin “Johnny” Brawley Jr., 53, 255 Lentz Road, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at his home.

Born June 4, 1948, in Rowan County, Mr. Brawley was a son of the late John Franklin and Naomi Benfield Brawley. He was a graduate of South Rowan High School and Rowan Cabarrus Community College.

During the Vietnam War, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

He was employed at Fiber Industries, now Kosa, and retired from Norandal USA after 20 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Sharon Deal Brawley, whom he married in April 1988; son Justin Brawley, Kannapolis; daughters Kelly Callicut, Mooresville, and Jessica Brawley, Kannapolis; stepson Bryan Cress, China Grove; stepdaughter Julie Cress, China Grove; and three grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Judy Ludwig Doby

SPENCER —Judy Ludwig Doby, 58, Spencer, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge.

 

Jean Tilley Grimes

CHINA GROVE —Jean Tilley Grimes, 59, 311 Blackwelder St., died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at her home.

Born March 20, 1942, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Grimes was a daughter of the late Richard and Sadie Powell Tilley. She was formerly employed by Cannon Mills Co. and Food Lion Inc.

A grandson preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Eugene “Pedro” Grimes; sons Boyd Ray Ewing and Richard Grimes, both of Kannapolis, and Tony Grimes, China Grove; daughter Gerri Ewing Gibbs, Rockwell; sister Carol Bare, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Saturday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev.David Tuck.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Helen Hancock

CONCORD — Helen Cline Hancock, 92, formerly of Corban Ave. S.E., died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Elizabeth S. Harpe

LEXINGTON —Elizabeth “Lib” Sharpe Harpe, 82, Country Club Drive, died Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Visitation: 1:30-2 today at the church.

Paul A. Huneycutt

ALBEMARLE —Paul Alexander Huneycutt, 83, 27169 Canton Heights Road, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Clarence Addison Mayfield, 97, Salisbury, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

David Edward Owens

SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for David Edward Owens, 73, formerly of 306 Carolina Ave., who died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at Brian Center, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 16, 1928, in China Grove, Mr. Owens, a son of the late William and Elizabeth McColum Owens, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He was a cab driver.

Survivors include sister Vida Owens Walters, Shelby.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Greenlawn Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Delmer Johnson.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Robert Parks

CONCORD — Robert Alan Parks, 17, 364 Vance Drive N.E., died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001).

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Ernest ‘Jim’ Pierce

The funeral will be Saturday for Ernest Caudell “Jim” Pierce, 88, Franklin community, who died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Pierce was a son of the late John Frank and Liza Gullett Pierce. He attended the Rowan County schools.

Retired from Cone Mills, he earlier was employed by Erwin Mills for five years and at Erwin Mills, Cooleemee. He was an active member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, the Men’s Sunday School Class and the men’s group.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. Larry Summey, pastor, Franklin Presbyterian Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Clarence E. Strickland

ANITA, Iowa —Clarence E. Strickland, 97, Anita, brother of Howard Strickland, Rockwell, N.C., died Sept. 3, 2001.

The body was cremated and a memorial service held Sept. 8 at Mullen Funeral Home.

 

Mary Strickland

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Knowles Strickland, 81, formerly of Oval Street, died Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord, after 18 months of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Concord, Mrs. Strickland was a daughter of the late Phillip and Lucy Knowles. She retired from Rose’s Dime Store and formerly worked at Cannon Mills Plant 1 spinning room.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Strickland, and a daughter, Linda Gibson.

Survivors include daughter Carol Hughes, Kannapolis; son Ronnie Strickland, Stockbridge, Ga.; sisters Lorene Smith and Eva Clay, both of Concord; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Masters. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Virginia Ward Turner

Virginia Ward Turner, 87, Salisbury, died Thursday (Sept. 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born June 10, 1914, in Spencer, Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Nannie Kesler Ward. She was educated in the Spencer schools and was a 1931 graduate of Spencer High School.

A homemaker, she was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, Fidelis Sunday school class and the Joy Club.

Her husband, Lee Roy Turner, died March 25, 1988.

Survivors include sons George L. “Sonny” Turner, Charlotte, and Larry W. and Lenn B. Turner, both of Salisbury; daughter Barbara T. Durrette, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael E. Motley, pastor, and the Rev. David Blanton, pastor, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Saturday,Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.
