West Rowan back Ben Hampton’s 206-yard rushing night in the Falcons’ 29-12 victory over South Rowan last week pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for his career. He now stands at 1,087.
Hampton’s effort marked the 33rd time in Rowan history and the seventh time in Falcon annals that a back has reached 200 yards in a single game. Four West players had accomplished the feat previously with Brent Hudson and Ernie Peace doing it twice each.
The school — and county — record is Hudson’s 314-yard explosion against East Rowan in 1995. Hudson also enjoyed a 234-yard night against West Iredell that season.
Peace reached the milestone twice in 1982, battering North Davidson for 288 yards, Trinity for 267.
The other Falcons to reach 200 were Lamont Smith (285 yards vs. North Stanly in 1994) and Lawrence “Skeet” Rankin (206 yards vs. Trinity in 1977).
The Cavaliers are off this week, so QB Alfonzo Miller will have to wait until North’s Sept. 28 Central Carolina 2A Conference opener against Lexington to make the history books.
Miller needs just 9 yards to reach 1,000 yards rushing for his career, a milestone that will make him a 1,000-yard triple threat.
The senior already has shattered the 1,000-yard plateau for receiving (1,809 yards) and passing (1,566 yards).
Miller, last season’s county offensive player of the year, has accounted for 56 TDs in his North career. He has scored 23 times on pass receptions, 19 times on rushes and once on a kickoff return. He’s thrown for another 13 TDs.
Every time Cal Hayes Jr. touched the ball last Friday night, the North defense swarmed all over him.
Hayes occasionally broke free, but not very often. He finished with just 53 yards on 20 carries as North cruised to a 44-14 victory.
“He’s the key,”Cavs head coach Roger Secreast said. “That’s what we worked on all week.”
To counter that focus, East head coach Tom Eanes gave senior fullback-type Jacob Moore extra carries. Moore bulled his way up the middle for 59 yards on 13 carries and keyed the Mustangs’ first scoring drive.
Early in the second quarter, Hayes had four carries on an eight-play scoring drive for zero yards. Moore had a big 22-yarder on a draw on third-and-12 and eventually scored from 2 yards out.
“Letting me run in the middle opened it a little bit for Cal outside,”Moore said.
Moore also got some work not in the deceptive hambone offense, but from the I-formation — a straight-up, no-gimmick offense.
“Our extra slots (runners) were playing defense all the time, so we had to run some I plays,”Eanes said. “That’s not something I want to do but it was working some.”
A shoulder injury to regular center Josh Barrier led to quarterback Drew Maher getting bloody this week at practice.
Maher was working with John Hyatt, a new center called up from the jayvees. Hyatt apparently has longer fingernails than Barrier and Maher, who hadn’t made the adjustment to the new guy just yet, was getting sliced up pretty good.
Maher, who was limping after the South Point game, also has a Nebraska-sized bruise on his back. and a knot on his foot.
Quarterback Dan Sullivan had another mistake-free night against Mooresville in a 31-13 win.
Sullivan has not been intercepted all season in 38 tries. Against Mooresville, he piled up 115 yards passing on just five completions.
n
BIGFOOT:David Wooldridge’s kicking keeps wowing everyone in attendance.
Against Mooresville, the senior sent all six kickoffs into the end zone, including one from the Davie 35 after a penalty. He averaged 49 yards on four punts.
n
HOME BOYS: Davie has won 23 of its last 27 games in War Eagle Stadium.
The War Eagles are 4-0 for just the fourth time since the school opened in 1956.
For West Davidson, it paid off playing larger schools in nonconference.
Once the Green Dragons got into Yadkin Valley Conference play Friday night, their foe, North Moore, was crushed 51-0.
West, coached by former South Rowan player Barry Mitchem, rang up 441 yards of offense, including 296 on the ground.
West (1-0, 2-2) led 31-0 at halftime behind the play of Dustin Hobbs, who completed five passes (three for scores) for 145 yards, kicked a field goal and averaged seven yards on four carries.
Drew Snider had 16 carries for 164 yards, Matthew Trogden had 76 yards on four carries and receivers Matthew Gibby and Chase Kepley combined for five catches for 145 yards.
