Gerald Edward Dow
SPENCER — The funeral will be Friday for Gerald Edward Dow, 32, Spencer, who died Saturday (Sept. 15, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1969, in St. Mary’s, Pa., Mr. Dow was a son of William R. Dow and Nancy Priest Dow, both of Virginia Beach,Va. He was a graduate of the Norfolk, Va., schools.
He was a self-employed maintenance worker with North Carolina Finishing Co. and was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Susan Yvonne Scott Dow, whom he married Feb. 1, 1999; son Christopher Dow, of the home; daughter Mandy Dow, Kannapolis; brother Delbert Dow, Virginia Beach,Va.; and sisters Deborah Bacon and Patricia Dow Williamson, both of Virginia Beach,Va.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, conducted by a VA Medical Center chaplain.
Visitation:1-1:45 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.
Melvin ‘Bill’ Harwood
ALBEMARLE — Melvin Edward“Bill” Harwood, 78, 991 N. Sixth St., died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Baptist Church. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Olin D. Hofmeister
KANNAPOLIS — Olin Daniel Hofmeister, 76, 2311 Woodlawn St., died Tuesday (Sept. 18, 2001)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after three years of declining health and a month of serious illness.
Born June 24, 1925, in Athens, Ga., Mr. Hofmeister was a son of the late Frank and Ola Jenkins Hofmeister. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War.
He owned and operated Hoffmeister’s Shoe Repair from 1946-1990. From 1990 to 2000, he operated the business as Village Cobbler.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was president of Friendship Sunday School Class for 10 years. In his earlier years, he was active with Boy Scouts and Jaycees.
Survivors include wife of 53 years Grace Sides Hofmeister; and daughter Connie Hofmeister Wilson, Portsmouth, Va.
Services: A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: None.

KANNAPOLIS — Larry Odell Perkins, 72, 904 Victoria Ave., died Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

ALBEMARLE —Eleanor McLain Swaringen, 85, 1012 N. Tenth St., died Tuesday (Sept. 18, 2001) at her home.

Lillie Pickett Walls
LINWOOD — Lillie Mae Pickett Walls, 73, Linwood-Southmont Road, died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Mrs. Walls was a daughter of the late Edgar and Belle Little Pickett. She retired from Burlington Industries.
A member of First Baptist Church, Southmont, she served on the usher board and kitchen committee. She was also a Good Samaritan Missionary and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary.
Survivors include husband Henry P. Walls; sons James L. Pickett, Browns Mill, N.J., Tommie “T.P.” Pickett, Lexington, Samuel F. Pickett, Auckland, New Zealand, and Henry J. Walls, Southmont; daughters Carolyn Scott, Southmont, Cynthia Friday, Hampton,Va.; Christina Brown, Advance, and Henrietta Walls, Columbia, Md.; brother Robert Pickett, Southmont; sisters Mary Lee Carter, Lexington, Josephine Morton, Baltimore, Md., and Ida Mae Evans, Southmont; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Thursday. First Baptist Church, Southmont, conducted by the Rev. John Gaston. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation:3:30-4 p.m. Thursday at the church. The body may be viewed from 1-8 today at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington.
‘Bobby’ Williams
KANNAPOLIS —Robert Lee “Bobby” Williams, 62, 906 Sloop Ave., died Tuesday (Sept. 18, 2001) at his home.
Born Dec. 13, 1938, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Williams was a son of the late Bruce and Alice Williams. He attended Victory Temple.A heavy equipment operator, he retired due to disability.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother Sally Williams.
Survivors include wife Ellar Christine Parrish Williams; sons Robert Allan Williams, Landis, and Bobby Joe Williams, China Grove; daughter Juanita Jane Greer, Kannapolis; and six grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Posey and the Rev. Willis Parrish. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
Visitation:7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Sloop Avenue.
