Myrtle L. Bowyer

The funeral will be Wednesday for Myrtle Lawless Bowyer, 89, formerly of South Ellis Street, died Monday(Sept. 17, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 18, 1911, in Bedford, Va., Mrs. Bowyer was a daughter of the late Clifton and Annie Elizabeth Kennedy Lawless. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1930 and later from Farmville State Teachers College (Longwood College), in Farmville, Va.

She taught school for six years in the Bedford County, Va., schools. A homemaker, she also taught in China Grove.

For 52 years she was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church and Circle 1. She was also a member of Norfolk Southern Wives Club.

Her husband, Clinton G. Bowyer, died Feb. 22, 1982. A grandson also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Charles C. Bowyer, Lexington, Larry C. and W. Stewart Bowyer, both of Salisbury, and Samuel W. Bowyer, Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dan Thornton, pastor, Second Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Beverly B. Coppley, pastor, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Statesville. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

George Foard Fowler

Private funeral services will be held for George Foard Fowler, 86, 8655 Hwy. 601 N., who died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at his home.

Born July 6, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Fowler was a son of the late Cicero F. and Jesse Lloyd Fowler. He was educated in the Woodleaf schools and graduated from Woodleaf High School. He attended Oak Ridge Military Institute.

He was employed by Rowan Dairy and later Flav-O-Rich Dairy as head of the mechanics department. In 1977 he retired from Fiber Industries, now KoSa.

A son, George Foard Fowler Jr., died in 1999.

Survivors include wife Olive Robinson, whom he married in 1940; daughter Paige F. Lyerly, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

The families will be at their respective homes.

Mattie Lou Garrett

KANNAPOLIS — Mattie Lou “Mama Lou” Graham Garrett, 87, formerly of 602 Doby St., died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at Transitional Health Services.

Born April 19, 1914, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Garrett was a daughter of the late William D. “Bill” and Annie Huff Graham. She retired in 1972 from CannonMills Co. after 32 years.

A member of Memorial Baptist Church, she was a formal Sunday school teacher and a member of Senior Saints Alive Club and WMU.

Her husband, William H. Garrett, died in 1988.

Survivors include sister Willie G. Moore, Danielsville, Ga.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Memorial Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.Don Davis and the Rev. Steve Davis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Terry Wayne Joyner

Terry Wayne Joyner, 48, Boston, Mass., formerly of Salisbury and Landis, died Saturday (Sept. 15, 2001) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass.

Born Nov. 6, 1952, in Bennettsville, S.C., Mr. Joyner was a son of Mary Frances Garner Joyner and the late Stamie Carroll Joyner. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He was employed by Food Town, now Food Lion, in North Carolina, and at Family Mart in South Carolina. He was also employed by an independent grocery store in Massachusetts.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include daughters Heather Lee and Ashley Dawn Joyner, both of Salisbury; brothers Stamie Joyner Jr., Salisbury, Johnny Joyner, Enochville, and Steve Joyner, Landis; half brother Donald Joyner, Jamaica Plain, Mass.; sister Deloris J. Tyner, China Grove; and one grandson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Patrick H. Majors

CLEVELAND — Private funeral services will be held at a later date for Patrick Hershel Majors, 79, Cleveland, who died Sunday (Sept. 16, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a week of serious illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Majors, a son of the late Willie and Mary Donovan Majors, was a graduate ofGermantown High School. He attended the University of Tennessee at Memphis.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired fromSears Roebuck &Co. in 1962 after 22 years. Later, he operated several businesses and worked as a farmer.

A Catholic, he was a volunteer with Rowan County EMTs and a volunteer fireman with Scotch Irish Fire Department. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Lions Club in Morganton, and a member of Restaurant and Motel Owners Association, Chamber of Commerce, Burke County Zoning Board and the VFW.

His wife, Claire Allen Majors, died April 1, 1992. He was also preceded in death by a grandson.

Survivors include sons David P. Majors, Cleveland, and Glenn A. Majors, Salisbury; daughter Patricia M. Fowlkes, Garner; brother Jimmy Majors, Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: The body will be cremated and private funeral services will be held later.

Faye R. Price

Faye Romanstine Price, 53, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 16, 2001) at her home after a brief illness.

Born Oct 27, 1947, in Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Price was a daughter of Louise Cook Romanstine, Salisbury, and the late William W. Romanstine. She was educated in the Lexington, S.C., schools and graduated from Brookland Cayce High School, Cayce, S.C.

Formerly employed by Krispy Kreme in Salisbury, she was associated with the Webb Road Flea Market and owned Faye’s Flea Market. She was a member of Carmel Baptist Church, where she was assistant pianist.

Survivors include husband Robert Hillis Price, whom she married Dec. 30, 1967; sons Robert William and Johnny Price, both of Salisbury; daughter Katelyn Danielle Price, of the home; brothers William Romanstine Jr., Beaufort, S.C., David and Paul Romanstine, both of Lexington, S.C., and Daniel Romanstine, Columbia, S.C.; sisters Georgia Metz, Irmo, S.C., Alice Romanstine-Hall, Newberry, S.C., and Martha Romanstine and Ginger Jumper, both of Lexington, S.C.; and one grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday,Carmel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roby Linebarger. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial, National Cemetery, Hefner VA Medical Center.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Jeanette E. Strickland

LEXINGTON — Jeanette “Jeanie” Ann Everhart Strickland, 65, Green Hill Apartments, died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at High Point Regional Hospital after several years of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a son, 13 DearDrive.

 

Mary Coley Thomas

ALBEMARLE — Mary Elizabeth Coley Thomas, 98, 32458 Charlie Road, died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at The Taylor House.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Silver Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Norwood.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of grandson David R. Thomas, 32458 Charlie Road.
