Pauline Barringer
KANNAPOLIS —Pauline Holshouser
Barringer, 86, formerly of Smith Road, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at
Transitional Health Services.
Born Oct. 13, 1914, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Barringer was a daughter of the late James Monroe and Effie Goodman
Holshouser. She retired in 1979 from Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1 sewing room.
A member of St. John’s United
Church of Christ, she was a former member of the Elizabeth Circle.
Her husband, Franklin Aubry
Barringer, preceded her in death and a son, Robert L. Hinson, died in 1999.
Survivors include two
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday,

Margaret Tippett Blair
Margaret Tippett Blair, 86,
Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 16, 1914, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Blair was a daughter of the late Charles Monroe and Lily Tuck
Tippett. She was a graduate of the Spencer schools and a 1936 graduate of the
University of North Carolina Women’s College, Greensboro, where she majored in
elementary education.
She taught in the High Point and
Charlotte city schools. A member of First Baptist Church, Spencer, she was a
deacon, taught the children’s Sunday school and volunteered in the church
office.
Her husband, Roland E. Blair,
died March 20, 1990, and a son, Dr. William “Bill”Blair, died July 18, 1996.
Survivors include three
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday,

Mary Ellen Hilburn
KANNAPOLIS — Mary Ellen
“Mace” McWhorter Hilburn, 72, 4408 Enochville Road, died Wednesday (Sept.
12, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born May 21, 1929, in Cabarrus
County, Mrs. Hilburn was a daughter of the late George F. and Margaret Starnes
McWhorter. She had been employed by Cannon Mills Co. in Plant 4 before she moved
to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she lived for 30 years and worked as a
manicurist.
She had moved back to Kannapolis
in 1982 and was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her
stepmother, Laura S. McWhorter.
Survivors include husband Hoyt
Hilburn; son Douglas Hilburn, Sunrise, Fla.; sisters Lura Nagy, Kannapolis, and
Joyce Griffin, Monroe; brothers Jerry McWhorter, China Grove, and Charles
McWhorter, Kannapolis; stepbrother Carl McDuffie, Reno, Nev.; and stepsister
Louise McDuffie, Kannapolis.

Leighanne Martin
The funeral will be Sunday for
Margaret Leighanne Martin 18, Salisbury, who died Sept. 12, 2001.
Born Sept. 15, 1982, in Cabarrus
County, Miss Martin was a daughter of Tonia Anne Correll Helms, Gold Hill, and
Ray Lee Martin, Salisbury.
She was educated at Erwin Middle
School and Concord High School and was a member of Cold Water Lutheran Church,
Concord.
Survivors, in addition to her
mother and father, include brother Ray Lee Martin Jr., Gold Hill; stepmother
Francis Stoner Martin, Salisbury; stepbrother Justin Lee McCrary, Salisbury;
half sisters Laurie Nicole and Leslie Nicole Helms, both of Gold Hill; and

James Edward McCoy
MOUNT ULLA — The funeral will
be Saturday for James Edward “Coddle Creek” McCoy, 81, 450 Childers Road,
who died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury,
after two weeks of serious illness.
Born June 22, 1920, in York
County, S.C., Mr. McCoy was a son of the late James “Jim” and Lou Archie
McCoy. He was educated in the York, S.C., schools.
A retired construction workers,
he attended Shady Grove Baptist Church, Bear Poplar, and Mount Vernon Baptist
Church.
His first wife, Edna Mae Hart
McCoy, died in 1969. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Ethel
Smyre McCoy.
Survivors include sons Robert
“Blue” McCoy, Mount Ulla, James “Pick” McCoy, Mooresville, John William
“J.W.” McCoy, Kannapolis, Richard Odell and Curt Thomas McCoy, both of
Charlotte, and Ronnie McCoy, Cleveland; daughters Ethel McCoy, Mooresville,
Lessie Jeanette Greer, Salisbury, Rachel Doretha Forney, Charlotte, and Kim
McCoy, Sandy McCoy Neely and Wendy McCoy, all of Cleveland; sister Eloree
Mobley, Salisbury; 31 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.

‘Buddy’ Powers
Robert Dale “Buddy” Powers,
50, 165 Hader St., died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical
Center.
Born July 22, 1951, in Roanoke,
Va., Mr. Powers, a son of the late Delmar Lester and Mary Frances Grove Powers,
was educated in the Rowan County schools. A self-employed brick mason, he was a
Baptist.
Survivors include wife Judy
Honeycutt Powers; son Robert Del Powers, Salisbury; daughter Robin Laws,
Salisbury; brother Todd Lee, Landis; sisters Esther Powers and Sharon Gail
Black, both of LeHigh Acres, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Katherine Loflin Smith
The funeral will be Saturday for
Katherine Loflin Smith, 80, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at
Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury.
Born Nov. 17, 1920, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late George and Lindy Easter Loflin.
She graduated from the Spencer schools.
Retired from Hoechst Celanese,
now KoSa, she previously worked at North Carolina Finishing Co. She was a member
of Bethel Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Spencer Davis Smith,
died Jan. 23, 1992.

“Jim” and George T. “Tom” Smith, both of Salisbury; brothers J.D. Loflin,
Port Orchard, Wash., and Albert and Ray Loflin, both of Salisbury; sister Betty

SPENCER — Essie Misenheimer
Tanner, 78, Spencer, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical
Center, Salisbury, after several months of declining health and two weeks of
serious illness.
Born May 3, 1923, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Tanner, a daughter of the late James Alexander and Gerdie Frye
Misenheimer, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from
Jeanette’s Maternity and was a member of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle.
Her husband, Wilburn G. Tanner,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Linda
Tanner, of the home, Bonnie Holshouser, Faith, Millie Campbell, Salisbury, and
Connie Elium, Gold Hill; sister Dot Curlee, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and
five great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday,
