Margaret T. Blair

Margaret Tippett Blair, 86, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Philip M. ‘Mike’ Dillon

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Philip M. “Mike” Dillon, 52, 550 Slater Drive, died on Monday (Sept. 10, 2001) at his home.

Born May 24, 1949, in Cleveland, N.C., Mr. Dillon was a son of Dorothy L. Dillon, Cleveland, N.C., and the late Thomas E. Dillon.

In 1967, he graduated from West Rowan High School, Mount Ulla, N.C. He received a BS in civil engineering with construction option in 1971 from North Carolina State University and a masters in engineering science management in 1977 from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

He received a professional engineers stamp in 1978. He owned Dillon Construction and Fairbanks Precasters since 1984.

In 1997, he developed Tamarack Woods, an 84-lot subdivision, in which he built 12 homes.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1973. He earned his pilot license in 1973, his instrument license in 1974 and his commercial pilot license in 1975.

He was a member of Interior Builders Association, National Precast Association, National Society of Professional Engineers and Pioneers of Alaska, Igloo 4.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Karen Norrgard Dillon; sons Thomas W. and Eric I. Dillon, both of Fairbanks; brother Thomas Dillon, Sugar Mountain, N.C.; and sisters Carole Huffman, Elon College, N.C., and Anita Dillon, Laguna Hills, Calif.

Services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Fairbanks Lutheran Church.

Jean Hess Farrington

Jean Hess Farrington, 62, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at her home after two years of declining health.

Born Dec. 21, 1938, in Rowan County, Mrs. Farrington was a daughter of the late Roy O. and Oma Wilkerson Hess. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A homemaker, she was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Fred Farrington, whom she married March 8, 1960; daughters Lisa Propst and Tracie Moss, both of Salisbury, and Kelly Farrington, Charlotte; brother Bobby Hess, Granite Quarry; sisters Carolyn Reinhardt, Apopka, Fla., Peggy Frank, Columbia, S.C., and Shirley Yarboro and Betty Black, both of Salisbury; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Private memorial service.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Shirley Yarboro, 2206 Mooresville Road.

Ruby W. Hermansen

FOREST CITY — Ruby Wagner Hermansen, 89, formerly of Arlington Apartments, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at Autumn Care Center.

A native of Rowan County, Mrs. Hermansen was a daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Sechler Wagner. She retired as a registered nurse and was the former owner of City Laundry.

Her husband, Walter E. Hermansen, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Glenda Hermansen, Forest City; sisters Mary W. Saunders, Charlotte, and Hazel Miller, Salisbury.

Services: 6:30 tonight, Padgett and King Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Bobby Gantt and the Rev. Robert Saunders. Burial, Friday at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Visitation: This evening after the service.

 

Mary ‘Mace’ Hilburn

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Ellen McWhorter “Mace” Hilburn, 72, 4408 Enochville Road, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

James ‘Jimmy’ Jones

MOCKSVILLE — James W. “Jimmy” Jones, Mocksville, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at his home.

Born Jan. 27, 1946, Mr. Jones was a son of John W. “Jay” and Alene Shoaf Jones.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sister Jane J. Foster.

Services: 2 p.m.Friday, Davie Funeral Service chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bill Shoaf and the Rev. Bobby Swain. Burial,Dulin Methodist Church cemetery.

Margarette K. Lanning

Margarette Kesler Lanning, 85, formerly of Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at Raleigh Community Hospital,Raleigh, after a short illness.

Born Oct. 2, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lanning was a daughter of the late James A. and Hattie Lyerly Kesler. She attended the Salisbury schools and was a graduate of Boyden High School. She took various classes at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

A member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women and American Legion Auxiliary, she ran Happy Traveler Motel.

Survivors include daughter Katherine Lanning West, Raleigh; brother James A. Kesler, Lake Norman; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. I. Mayo Little, Episcopal pastor. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Margaret Martin

Margaret Leigh Ann Martin, 18, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001).

William H. Patterson

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Friday for William Henry Patterson, who died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at his home after an extended illness.

A native of Davie County, Mr. Patterson was a son of Thelma Cain, Mocksville. He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Mary Hatcher Patterson; sons William H. Patterson I and Jonathan Patterson, both of the home, Gerald Patterson, Winston-Salem, and Ronald Patterson, Killen,Texas; daughters Christal Busbee, Mocksville, April Patterson, Winston-Salem, and Bonnie Busbee, Aiken, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church, Davie County, conducted by the Rev. S.F. Hairston. Burial with military rites in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Hubert Hague Powell

KANNAPOLIS — Hubert Hague Powell, 87, 4827 Camp Cabarrus Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 29, 1913, in Caldwell County, Mr. Powell was a son of the late Hubert Lee and Margaret V. Hague Powell.

A graduate of Weaver Junior College, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Wofford College. He retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1 after 49 years of service in administration. He served on the Cabarrus County Board of Education for 18 years, working on modernization of the system.

Mr. Powell had been active in Scouting since 1934 and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was caretaker, ranger and naturalist at Camp Cabarrus Boy Scout Camp since 1942. An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served on the executive board and taught the Men’s Bible Class. He had been a member of Winecoff Lions Club for many years and Gideons International.

His wife, Peggy Marie Hudspeth Powell, died in 1981.

Survivors include sons Hubert H. Powell Jr., Taylors, S.C., Dr. Thomas W. Powell, Concord; daughter Dr. Mary Ellen Powell Durham, Raleigh; brothers the Rev. John James Powell, Mill Spring, and Loren Quincy Powell, Troutman; sisters Margaret Alice Sims, Harrisburg, and Sarah Leslie Edmiston, Cocoa, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Katherine Loflin Smith

Katherine Loflin Smith, 80, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 1001) at Genesis Eldercare.

SPENCER — Essie Misenheimer Tanner, Spencer, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Jeraldine Thomason

LEXINGTON — Jeraldine Hedrick Thomason, 74, Becks Nursery Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after two weeks of illness.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Becks Nursery Road.

 

Michael Dale Wallace

MOCKSVILLE — Michael Dale Wallace, 46, Leanne Lane, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.

Born April 5, 1955, in Rowan County, Mr. Wallace was a son of L.G. “Bud” Wallace of Mocksville and the late Ada Ann Atkinson Wallace. He had worked at Ingersol/Rand Corp. for 29 years.

A Baptist, he was a member of Farmington Masonic Lodge, a board member of Milling Manor and past president of Davie County ARC.

In addition to his father, he is survived by daughter Leanne M. Wallace, Mocksville, and stepmother Sara W. Wallace, Mocksville.

Services: 7:30 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Gilbreath. Burial, 11 a.m. Friday, Eaton Baptist Church.

Visitation: Following the service tonight at the funeral home.
