KANNAPOLIS — Lola Bowers Baker, 84, 1603
Carlton Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 30, 2001) at Brian Center of Concord.
Born Sept. 10, 1916, in Anson County, Mrs. Baker
was a daughter of the late John and Ottis Hopkins Bowers. She retired from
Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, where she was a nurses’ aide.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse
Odell Baker; son, Richard Odell Baker; and a grandson.
Survivors include half brother Harry Bowers,
Winston-Salem; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Carolina
Memorial Park.
Visitation: At the residence on Carlton Avenue
following the service.

Virginia Orr Bennett
KANNAPOLIS — Virginia Orr Bennett, 86, formerly
of 1418 S. Ridge Ave., died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at the Brian Center, Concord,
after seven years of declining health.
Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Roanoke, Alabama, Mrs.
Bennett was a daughter of the late William Oscar and Lola Treadwell Orr. She was
employed with Cannon Mills Co, Plant 1 sewing room for many years until her
retirement. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Her husband, Joseph R. Bennett, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral
Home chapel, conducted by Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral
home. At other times, the family will be at the home of nephew A.L. Vickers,
1101 Mount Olivet Road, Kannapolis.

Hoyle ‘Sock’ Bostian
Hoyle “Sock” Bostian, 82, 4930 Miller Road,
died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 23, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. Bostian
was a son of the late Hazelius Socrates and Rhetta Howell Bostian. He was a 1937
graduate of China Grove High School. He had been employed at Cannon Mills in the
maintenance department and was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Mr. Bostian was a member of the Rowan Honor
Guard, Rowan Veteran’s Council, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342,
Amvets Post 460, the 40&8 Post, Moose Lodge 900, the Andrew Jackson Masonic
Lodge and the Oasis Temple.
He had retired as a master sergeant from the Army
Reserve 108th Training Division after 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife,Barbara Yost Bostian;
sons Hoyle Steven Bostian, Little River, S.C., and Harold Mitchell Bostian,
Salisbury; daughter Gwen Bostian Brown, Cary; four grandchildren; two
stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Services: 2:30 today, St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bruce. Graveside rites by Rowan Veteran’s
Council. Burial, church cemetery.

GEORGETOWN, Texas —Mary Ann Butler Calloway,
90, 408 W. Eighteenth St., died Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001).
She was the stepmother of William E. Calloway,
Albemarle.

Memorial Park.

Robert Baxter Deal
WOODLEAF — Robert Baxter Deal, 69, died Friday
(Aug. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three months of declining
health.
Born Dec. 1, 1931, in Rowan County, Mr. Deal was
a son of the late Carl Leonard and Pearl Carter Deal. He was a 1949 graduate of
Woodleaf High School.
He was a supervisor for Hoechst-Celanese for 27
years, retiring in 1992. He was also an avid farmer.
Mr. Deal was a member of Unity Presbyterian
Church, where he served as a deacon and elder, was a Sunday school teacher and
served as chairman of the Cemetery Committee. He was a member of the Woodleaf
Civitan Club and served on the board of Rowan Mutual Fire Insurance. He was a
U.S.Army veteran, serving in Alaska.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Lyerly Deal,
whom he married on July 14, 1951; daughters Deborah D. Link, and Gail D.Rector,
both of Salisbury, and Traci Deal, of the home; brother Charles N. Deal, Hobart,
Ind.; sister Virginia D. Moore, Woodleaf; and four grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Unity Presbyterian
Church, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Bullock. The body will be placed in the
church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Horace Graham Rowe
LEXINGTON — Horace Graham Rowe, 77, Lexington,
died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001) at the Hefner Veterans Administration Medical
Center.
Services: A graveside service will be held at a
later date at the Salisbury National Cemetery at the V.A.Medical Center. The
body will be cremated.

Charlie Spencer Jr.
FAITH — Charlie Spencer Jr., 37, 340 Alphous
Road, died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after one
day of illness.
Born Dec. 22, 1963, in Washington, D.C., Mr.
Spencer was a son of Kathleen Heilig Propst, Salisbury, and the late Charlie
Spencer.He was a 1982 graduate of North Rowan High School.
He was last employed at Genesis Nursing Center
and had previously attended St. Matthew Baptist Church, Rockwell.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son
Christopher D. Spencer, Salisbury; daughter Christina Worth, Salisbury; brothers
Randolph Phillips, Richard Phillips and Thomas Spencer, all of Salisbury;
sisters Louise Adams, Garner, Stella Hurd, Faith, and Mary Ann Phillips,
Spartanburg, S.C.

‘Peggy’ Swanson
Margaret “Peggy” Riis Swanson, 71, 635
Statesville Blvd., died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001) at the Brian Center Nursing and
Rehabilitation.
Born July 25, 1930, in Inglewood, N.J., Mrs.
Swanson was the daughter of the late Laurence J. and Katherine G. Stallsmith
Riis. She graduated from high school in New Hampshire and attended Pennsylvania
State University and the University of Texas at El Paso.
She had worked for the bishop’s office in New
Hampshire and had been a deputy sheriff and ambulance worker in New Mexico.
Later in life, she was employed by the Gaston Hospital in home health.
She was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran
Church and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Norman
Swanson, whom she married July 22, 1950; son Eric N. Swanson, El Paso, Texas;
daughters Katherine S. Krzebiot, Wolfforth, Texas, and Wanda S. Jones,
Salisbury; brother Larry Riis, Vermont; four grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial service 7 p.m., Wednesday,
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The body will be cremated. Burial, church
columbarium.

following the service.

Opal Clove Treece
KANNAPOLIS — Opal Clove Smith Treece, 78, 4424
Enochville Road, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord, after one year of declining health and four months of serious illness.
Born Dec. 13, 1922, in Stanly County, Mrs. Treece
was a daughter of the late William Andy and Hattie Mae Talbert Smith. She
retired from Cannon Mills Co. in 1984, where she worked in Plant 4, weave room
2. She was a member of Kannapolis Alliance Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odis
Raymond Treece, in May 1986; sons Bobby Ray and James William Treece; daughter
Sara Lou Treece; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Survivors include son Kenneth O. Treece,
Kannapolis; daughter Kathryn T. Miller, Kannapolis; brothers Harvey and Curtis
Smith, both of Albemarle; sister Latrue S. Smith, Albemarle; eight grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.

Church, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth McQueen. Internment will be at Zion
Methodist Church Cemetery, Gold Hill.

Dorothy G. Williams
FAITH — Dorothy Grimes Williams, 88, Faith,
died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001) at her residence.
Born Sept. 18, 1912, in Charleston, S.C., Mrs.
Williams was a daughter of the late Joseph Herbert and Edna Marie Aull Grimes.
She was educated in Augusta, Ga.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, the
Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Extension Homemakers Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John
Lester Williams, on Sept. 4, 1966.
Survivors include daughters Sylvia W. Showalter,
Jackson, Tenn., and Claire W. Schuetrum, W. Columbia, S.C.; and two
grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Rowan
Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Charles R. Brawley, pastor of Faith Baptist
Church.

Mary Helen Willis
Mary Helen Brown Willis, 53, formerly of 717 Elm
St., died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at the Brian Center, after two years of
declining health.
Born June 8, 1948, in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Willis was a daughter of Gertrude Britt Brown and the late A. Frank Brown. She
was educated in the Kannapolis City Schools.
She was employed for 30 years as a manager at
various convenience stores in the area. She was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
daughter Jennifer Love, Salisbury; sons Jason Willis, Millers Creek, and Justin
Willis, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters Ellen Leazer, China Grove, and Betty Jones,
Faith; and six grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 3 p.m. today, Lane Street
Church of God, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Wade H. Easom. Burial will be
