Virginia O. Bennett

KANNAPOLIS — Virginia Orr Bennett, 86, formerly of 1418 S. Ridge Ave., died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Brian Center, Concord, where she had been a resident for seven years.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Hoyle Bostian

Hoyle Bostian, 82, 4930 Miller Road, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) .

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Robert Baxter Deal

WOODLEAF — Robert Baxter Deal, 69, of Woodleaf, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home of Salisbury is in charge.

 

Eli F. Goodman

GOLD HILL— The funeral will be held Sunday for Eli Franklin Goodman, 71, who died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 13, 1930, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Clarence David and Freda Morgan Goodman. He attended Rockwell High School, was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from N.C. Finishing Co. in July 1995.

Mr. Goodman belonged to East Corinth Baptist Church and was a member of the Local USCW 440. He played Santa Claus for 40 years throughout the county, including the old Rose’s Department Store.

Survivors include wife Billie Jean Austin Goodman, whom he married April 18,1953; son Randy Franklin Goodman, China Grove; daughter Cheryl Lynn Cothern, Goose Creek, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, East Corinth Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnny Daniel. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall. Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge.

Carl Griffin

KANNAPOLIS — James Carl Griffin, 65, 1006 Laura Ave., died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at his home.

Born Sept. 8, 1935, in Union County, he was a son of the late John Bridger and Gladys Mills Griffin.

Educated in the Winecoff School District, Mr. Griffin retired from Cannon Mills Plant 4 and attended Franklin Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Shirley Jean Overcash Griffin; daughters Becky Jean Shaver, Concord, and Cindy Carlene Dillard, Landis; sister Margie Ann Horton, Landis; brothers John Carson Griffin and Donald Ray Griffin, both of Rockwell, and Irvin Griffin, Asheville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral Home.

Jean T. Harrison

Jean Thompson Harrison, 76, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 15, 1924, in Dedham, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Alan McLean and Isabelle Russell Thompson.

Educated in Boston, Mass., schools, Mrs. Harrison was a homemaker and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

She belonged to Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church and was a former member of the Women’s Missionary Society.

Survivors include husband Earl Edward Harrison, whom she married May 11, 1946; son John Alan Harrison, Cleveland; daughter Linda Sue Aquilar, Slidell, La.; brothers Frederick Alan Thompson, Yarmouth, Mass., Russell G. Thompson, Rehoboth, Mass., and Roland C. Thompson, Foxboro, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Donald L. Godfrey, pastor of Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery annex, Statesville Boulevard.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

 

‘Hoppy’ Hopkins

LEXINGTON — Stanford George “Hoppy” Hopkins, 84, of Old Highway 64 East, died Thursday (Aug. 30, 2001) at Hospice House of Winston-Salem.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday, Beck’s United Church of Christ cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darrin Everhart.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service and at other times will be at the home.

Beatrice D. Koonts

LEXINGTON — Beatrice Daniel Koonts, 84, Lexington Health Care, and formerly of Old Highway 64 West, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Lexington Health Care.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Reeds Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Dan R. Hutchins. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home.

Geraldine H. Welborn

LEXINGTON — Geraldine Hobbs Welborn , 74, West 2nd Avenue, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at her home.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Lindsley. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home and at other time at the home.

Sarah C. Woodruff

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be tonight for Sarah Charles Woodruff, 93, Yadkinville Road, who died Thursday (Aug. 30, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1907, in Davie County, she was a daughter of the late John Calton and Sally Crump Charles. She attended Davie County Schools and Appalachian Teachers College.

She was a homemaker and taught at Davie Academy and also as a substitute teacher in Davie County Schools.

Mrs. Woodruff belonged to First Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher.

Survivors include husband Tom Bailey Woodruff, to whom she was married for 73 years, and sister Helen C. Carter, Mocksville.

Services 7 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Neal Carter. Burial, 1 p.m. Sunday, Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: Tonight, following the service.

Memorials: Building Fund, First Presbyterian Church, 261 S. Main St., Mocksville, NC 27028.
