Two trucks flipped over in the middle of Jake Alexander Boulevard on Monday afternoon, pinning both drivers in their vehicles and sending both to the hospital.
Paul Steven Doolittle, 30, of 125 Oak Mountain Road, Salisbury, was charged with driving while impaired. Police say Doolittle left the Waffle House parking lot at 3:46 p.m. in his 1992 Ford pickup truck.
Salisbury police say he pulled out in front of Ashlie Nicole Hinson, 20, of 1070 Spring Valley Lane, Salisbury, who was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer. Hinson was driving in the left southbound lane toward Interstate 85.
Doolittle’s red pickup flipped onto its left side; Hinson’s sport utility vehicle landed on its top.
Traffic in the northbound lane was blocked for about half an hour as members of the Rowan County Rescue Squad cut away the roof of the pickup truck to release Doolittle. They broke windows to free Hinson.
Rowan Regional Medical Center listed Doolittle in serious condition and Hinson in good condition this morning.
Both automobiles were complete losses. Firefighters pulled bags and a firefighter’s turnout uniform and boots from the Explorer.
A Waffle House coffee cup sat in the console of Hinson’s pickup truck.
A crowd of onlookers watched from a nearby service station as tow trucks quickly righted the two vehicles.
Police charged Doolittle with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license and unsafe movement.
Police estimate Doolittle was driving 47 mph at the time of impact. Hinson was driving an estimated 29 mph.
