John Ervin Bame

John Ervin Bame, 74, Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. He had been in declining health and seriously ill two weeks.

Born July 30, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Bame was a son of the late John Calvin and Mary Walton Bame. He graduated from East Spencer High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He retired from Southern Bell Telephone and was also the retired assistant fire chief with Union Fire Department. He was a member of Union Lutheran Church, Spencer Masonic Lodge and Spencer Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include wife Sarah Barringer Bame, whom he married Nov. 30, 1946; son Kirby J. Bame, Mobile, Ala.; daughter Cathy Williams, Salisbury; sister Leola Wright, Marion; and five grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Ruth Bost Edson

WOODLEAF — The funeral will be Wednesday for Ruth Bost Edson, 89, Woodleaf, who died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at The Laurels of Salisbury after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Edson was a daughter of the late Martin Luther and Mary Lee Powlas Bost. She graduated as a registered nurse from Rowan Memorial Hospital in 1932.

Employed as a registered nurse for many years, she later worked with her late husband, Leslie Wilbur Edson, owner/operator of Arnold’s Ready to Wear. She was a life-long member of Unity Presbyterian Church.

Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1986.

Survivors include brothers Hobert, Robert and Richard Bost, all of Woodleaf; and sister Helen Tysinger, Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Unity Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. William Adams. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Thomas Wayne Griffin

Thomas Wayne Griffin, 65, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) at his home.

Born Sept. 29, 1936, in Union County, Mr. Griffin was a son of the late J. Albert and Velmer Price Griffin. He was educated in Union County schools and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired as a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Evie Jean Simmons Griffin; sons Terry Griffin, Landis, Steve Griffin, Okinawa, and Ricky Griffin, Mooresville; daughter Judy Griffin Flores, Landis; stepson Jeffrey Smith, Mount Pleasant; brother William “Bill” Griffin, Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt, Landis Baptist Church, and the Rev. Alan Reed, Wilmar Park Baptist Church. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard site, with military rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Carl Fred Heglar

MOORESVILLE — Funeral arrangements are pending for Carl Fred Heglar, 355 Corriher Grange Road, who died Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

MOORESVILLE — Jay C. Hodge, 417 Beaten Path, died Monday (Oct. 29, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Marvin White Ketchie

SPENCER — Marvin White Ketchie, 93, Spencer, died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at Magnolia Gardens after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 19, 1908, in Rowan County, Mr. Ketchie was a son of the late Eva Ann Black and Lewis Ketchie. He was educated in Rowan County schools and retired from Southern Railway shops in Spencer.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

His wife, Margie Lee McCarn Ketchie, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son James Lewis Ketchie, Granite Quarry; daughter Dorothy King, Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, graveside, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Max Mills, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury.

 

 

Marvin White Ketchie

William Bryan Knotts

William Bryan Knotts, 38, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 27, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 3, 1963, in Rowan County, Mr. Knotts was a son of Ethel Kesler Knotts, Salisbury, and Robert Homer Knotts, Mulberry, Fla. He graduated from West Rowan High School in 1981 and was employed at Freightliner in Cleveland.

He was a member of Woodleaf Baptist Church and the Woodleaf Volunteer Fire Department and had been working on a degree in personal computer repair.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by wife Annette Coughenour Knotts, whom he married June 27, 1981; daughters Amber Annette and Shanna Hope Knotts, both of the home; brothers Bobby Knotts, Woodleaf, Bill Knotts, Seven Springs, and Ed Knotts, Darlington, Pa.; and sister Kristina Knotts Adkins, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, graveside, Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. Chris Williams, pastor of Woodleaf Baptist Church, and the Rev. Fred Carlton, Mooresville.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

Alice B. McCullough

MOCKSVILLE — Alice B. McCullough, 96, Mocksville, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Eaton Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Patty H. Murray

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Patty Anne Hart Murray, 88, 536 Kiser Ave., who died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health.

Born March 10, 1913, in Franklin County,Ga., Mrs. Murray was the daughter of the late D.H. and Effie Lou Partain Hart. In 1975, she retired after 40 years at Cannon Mills Co. plant 1 sewing room.

A member of Kannapolis West A Street Church of God, she was a volunteer at Big Elm Retirement Center for many years.

Her husband, Willie Murray, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Willie Murray Jr., Kannapolis; and sisters Elizabeth Ballard, Kannapolis, and Frances Bell and Ruby Bryant, both of Royston, Ga.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Kannapolis West A Street Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Stan Crisp and Matthew Beaver. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.At other times the family will be at the home on Kiser Avenue.

KANNAPOLIS — Wade L. Taylor, 105 Crestwood Court, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at his home.
