Area runners headed to state

East Rowan’s boys and West Rowan’s girls have qualified for this Saturday’s 3A state cross country meet that will be held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

The Mustangs and Falcons qualified with high finishes at the Midwest Regional held at Dan Nicholas Park on Saturday.

East’s boys qualified by finishing fourth. The Mustangs, coached by Rick Roseman, trailed Ragsdale, Weddington and Northwest Cabarrus in team scoring.

West’s girls also qualified with a fourth-place finish. The Falcons, coached by Ken Houghton, trailed Weddington, Northwest Cabarrus and Southeast Guilford.

The individual boys winner was Northwest’s Phillip Stafford in a time of 15:41.3.

The individual girls winner also came from the North Piedmont Conference — North Iredell’s Nathali Ramon in a time of 19:46.7.

The five who figured in team scoring for the Mustang boys were Phillip Johnson, 16th in 17:10.7; Brent Dorris, 23rd, 17:37.9; Jonathan Shive, 29th, 17:47.7; A.J. Pearson, 35th, 17:54.1; and Daniel Prymock, 46th, 18:15.2.

Also competing for East were Noah Melton, who was 50th, and Matt Hill, 89th.

The top five Falcon girls were Callie Houghton, 19th in 21:11.5; Allison Moore, 20th, 21:15.4; Ashley Haithcock, 28th, 21:32.7; Natalie Jones, 35th, 21:5.5; and Cara Graham, 44th, 22:16.6.

Other competing West girls were Devon Williams, who was 45th, and Emily Wallace, 54th.

The top runner for West’s boys was Bryan Duggan, who finished 28th. Michael Wise led A.L. Brown. He was 30th.

Nicole Sensabaugh of Northwest was girls runner-up. The top East girl was Elanie Cintron, who was 78th, just ahead of teammate Adrienne Pless. Leading A.L. Brown’s girls was Maggie Correll, who finished 83rd.

  • Salisbury girls ninth in state

CHARLOTTE — Salisbury’s girls finished ninth in the 1A/2A state cross country meet at McAlpine Park on Saturday.

Brevard won the girls championship.

Salisbury’s Anna Griffis finished sixth overall in a time of 20:02.58.

Other runners who counted toward Salisbury’s team score were Maria Mendez, 60th in 22:34.34; Anna Cunningham, 61st, 22:35.73; Mandy Marcengill, 89th, 23:16.72; and Meredith Martin, 103rd, 24:09.78.

Mary Jane Glasgow and Kelly Ross also competed for the Hornets.

Salisbury’s boys did not qualify for the state meet, but RyanLesley did qualify to run as an individual and turned in a strong 17:45. He finished 40th out of 155 competitors.

  • South boys ninth in regionals

South Rowan’s boys cross country team finished ninth in the 4A Midwest Regional on Saturday at Tanglewood Park.

Chapel Hill won, followed by Mount Tabor, North Forsyth and West Forsyth. Davie finished 17th.

Raiders who figured in team scoring were Adam Richardson, 24th in 17:09; Brett Howell, 31st, 17:33; Matt Maris, 54th, 18:37; Russell Perry, 57th, 18:44; and Jimmy Freeman, 74th, 19:09.

South’s Luke Lord and Robby Moore also competed and finished 86th and 87th, respectively.

Davie was paced by John Glasscock, 53rd in 18:35.

South’s girls didn’t compete as a team, but Katie Willett finished 11th in 20:48 to qualify for Saturday’s state meet. Raider Rachel Hinshaw ran 22:30 for 54th.

Davie finished 11th in girls team scoring. The War Eagles were led by Rebekkah Peeler, who finished 33rd in 21:37.

  • Salisbury soccer seeded 2nd

Coach Tom Sexton’s Salisbury soccer team has been seeded No. 2 in the West for the 2A state playoffs that start tomorrow.

The Hornets open at home with No. 15 Mitchell County. If Salisbury wins, it will host a second-round match Saturday against the winner of No. 8 Ledford (runner-up to the Hornets in the Central Carolina Conference) and No. 9 Monroe.

A third CCC team, West Iredell, is seeded 13th and travels to No. 4 Charlotte Catholic in the first round.

Shelby is the No. 1 seed in the West.

Roanoke Rapids is top seed in the East. Swansboro, which beat Salisbury this year, is No. 2 in the East.

In the 3A playoffs, the North Piedmont is represented by No. 3 seed North Iredell and 11th-seeded Statesville.

North Iredell hosts Southeast Guilford and Statesville visits Ragsdale in the first round.

In 4A, West Forsyth and South Iredell will represent the Central Piedmont in the playoffs.

Fifth-seeded West Forsyth hosts A.C. Reynolds, while ninth-seeded South Iredell visits Northwest Guilford.

  • Fox, Woodson fall in quarters

Salisbury High’s Kristy Woodson and Tonya Fox won their first doubles match at the 2A state individual tennis tournament over the weekend, but fell in the second round.

Fox and Woodson beat High Point Andrews’ Jennifer Shaw and Ashley Lambeth 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16.

In the quarters, the Hornet duo lost to Charlotte Catholic’s Kate Tans and Natalie Ross 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

The Hornets play at Catholic in the 2A dual team tournament on Tuesday.

  • Gealy makes second stage

Salisbury’s Eliot Gealy survived the first stage of a PGA qualifier at National Golf Club in Southern Pines.

Gealy shot rounds of 77-71-70-71 for a 1-over par 289 total.

That total was good for a tie for 15th. The top 21 golfers (and ties) advanced to the second stage.

  • C.G. football sweeps rival

China Grove Middle school teams finished off football seasons with a sweep of Corriher-Lipe. The Red Devil seventh-graders won 40-26, while the eighth-grade team won 26-0.

Patrick Jester, Matt Hensley, Clint Fontenot, and Kenny Brandt scored for the seventh-grade team.

Nick Woolf and Nick Stamey scored touchdowns for the eighth-grade team.

  • Catawba spikers win pair

Catawba beat Mars Hill Friday and Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday in SAC volleyball to extend its winning streak to six.

Senior Talita McClain led the way against the Lions with 17 kills.

Catawba(11-13) socked the Bears behind 23 kills by Rachel LaRoche and 13 by Elizabeth Hewitt.

  • Catawba women’s soccer falls

Catawba’s women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Presbyterian Saturday night and missed an opportunity to win the SAC regular season title.

Instead, first place went to Tusculum (5-1-1). PC and the Indians tied for second with 5-2 records.

Catawba (7-6-1 overall) will host a first-round SAC tourney match on Tuesday.

  • Catawba field hockey loses

WINSTON-SALEM — Catawba College closed out its field hockey season with a 5-0 loss to Davidson on Friday night in a match played at Wake Forest.

Catawba’s record was 2-11.

  • Witalison wins sectional

Erin Witalison, a student at Erwin Middle School, took top honors in the Punt, Pass and Kick Sectional Tournament held in Newton on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Witalison competed in the girls 12-13 division and may advance to the final PP&K competition, depending on other sectional scores. If Witalison’s score is one of the top five, she will compete in the finals at a Carolina Panthers game.

n Moors win baseball league

Mooresville’s fall baseball team took first place in the Mocksville Fall League with a season-ending 7-2 and 5-1 doubleheader sweep of Mocksville.

Paul Link pitched the opening-game win, fanning five in four innings. Tyler Lackey and Patrick Adams finished up.

Chris McDaniels provided the offense with a first-inning grand slam. McDaniels, Adams and Ronald Crum had two hits each. Both of Adams’ hits were doubles.

Mooresville won the nightcap behind the pitching of McDaniels, Josh Haire and Adams. Lackey’s three-run double in the fourth broke a scoreless tie.

Mooresville went 11-1 in the MFL and 28-5-1 overall.

  • Hoops sign-ups at South Y

South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations for its Little Shooters and boys basketball programs.

Registration continues through Nov. 18 for boys and girls in first and second grades and boys in grades 3-8.

Practice starts in December. Games start in January. Fees are $31 for YMCA members and $54 for non-members.

  • Pfeiffer men’s soccer falls

Pfeiffer’s men’s soccer team lost 4-0 to Belmont Abbey to finish the regular season with a 7-3-1 conference record.

  • Pfeiffer teams run well

Pfeiffer’s cross country teams finished their season in the CVAC Tournament.

Coach Rob Perron’s men finished third, the women sixth. Lees-McRae won both the men’s and women’s competition.

  • Pfeiffer wins golf tourney

Pfeiffer won the Pfeiffer/North Shore Invitational golf tournament with a 593.

Pfeiffer was led by third-place finisher Ben St. John’s 71-72 — 143.
