North Rowan’s record-setting quarterback Alfonzo Miller heads the list of area players named to the North Carolina squad for this year’s Shrine Bowl football game.
Miller has thrown for 1,527 yards and 15 touchdowns and has rushed for an additional 820 yards and 12 TDs this season for coach Roger Secreast’s Cavaliers.
Miller is likely to play wideout for the Shrine squad, a position he manned early in his career. He had over 1,800 yards in receptions before switching to QB as a junior.
He is the 3rd straight Shrine Bowl Cav, following Jarrett Wishon and Mario Sturdivant.
Davie County, which had not had a player on the Shrine squad since 1985 and had enjoyed only four in its entire history, placed a pair on this year’s team — linebacker Patrick Lowery and kicker David Wooldridge.
Wooldridge has booted nine field goals and 31 extra points this season and is averaging 45 yards per punt. Lowery, everybody’s All-American, averages 16 tackles per game.
A.L. Brown’s Wonders seem to be represented every year and also placed two on the team. It’s no surprise that the big-play men who have led the Wonders to five straight wins — back Chris Carter and receiver Touché Allison — got the nod. They’ve combined for 28 TDs.
Carter has rushed for 940 yards, while Allison has caught 34 passes for 666 yards and has also run back four kicks for scores.
