Elam Bratcher
EAST SPENCER — Elam Bratcher, 84, 312 E. Adams St., died Tuesday (Oct. 23, 2001) at the home of his daughter, with whom he lived.
Born June 12, 1917, in Iredell County, Mr. Bratcher was a son of the late John and Lillie Keaton Bratcher. He was educated in Iredell County, retired from N.C. Finishing Co. and was a member of Providence AMEZion Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Lowery Bratcher, on Jan. 10, 1991, and a son, Arthur Bratcher, on July 4, 1977.
Survivors include sons Jesse and Robert Bratcher, both of East Spencer; daughters Beatrice Bratcher Weeks and Ella Louise Bratcher, both of East Spencer; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Norman Ray “Happy Kid” Brown, 63, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 12, 1938, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Bill Brown and Irma Walser Brown Sides. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a Baptist and a member of the East Rowan CBClub.
Survivors include stepfather Dewey Sides, of the home; stepbrother Johnny Sides, Concord; and stepsisters Bonnie Graham and Sherrie Sides, both of Rockwell, and Terry Sides, Gold Hill.

Norma C. Howard
KANNAPOLIS — Norma Chapman Howard, 83, formerly of 315 S. Ridge Ave., died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) after a lengthy illness at Brian Center, Concord, where she was a resident for several years.
Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Pickens County, S.C., Mrs. Howard was a daughter of the late Ira T. and Nancy Wham Chapman. After World War II, she was employed by the local police department to modernize the filing system, which became a permanent position. She was the first female deputy in Kannapolis.
During this period, she was also a feature writer and book editor for the Daily Independent. After her retirement, she was appointed a magistrate for Cabarrus County and remained in the position for several years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church. Active in the community, she was affiliated with Little Theater Production, Kannapolis Chapter of the North Carolina Symphony, Eastern Star and various garden and book clubs. She won several golfing trophies.
Survivors include sisters Vivian LeMaster, Howe, Ind., and Vessie Belk, Kannapolis; and brother Ira T. Chapman, Charlotte.

MOCKSVILLE — Margaret Jordan Shepherd, 81, Ken Dwiggins Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at Autumn Care of Mocksville after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1919, in Cooleemee, Mrs. Shepherd, a daughter of the late Arlie and Mattie Smoot Jordan, was a 1937 graduate of Cooleemee High School.
She retired from Erlinger Mills, Lexington, and was employed with Erwin Mills for many years. A member of Cooleemee First Baptist Church, she had been a Sunday school teacher in the children’s department.
Her husband, Lee Olen Shepherd, died in 1983.

Hazel Jones Sherrill
The funeral will be Sunday for Hazel Jones Sherrill, 430 E. Horah St., who died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of serious illness.
Born in Rowan County, Mrs. Sherrill was a daughter of Marie Phillips Curry, Salisbury, and the late Herman Jones. She was the stepdaughter of the late Clinzo Curry. She attended J.C. Price High School and was a graduate of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She retired from General Electric.
A member of Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, she was a member of the Senior Choir, was a missionary and was involved with the Pastor’s Aide. She was also involved at the state and local level with the matrons and ushers.
Survivors include husband Otha Sherrill; daughters Geraldine Moore, Knightdale, and WandaM. Oglesby, Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren.

GRANITE QUARRY — James Lee Shoaf, 72, West Lyerly Street, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at his home. He had been in declining health a year and seriously ill two weeks.
Born Sept. 2, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Shoaf was a son of the late Othell and Pauline Overcash Shoaf. He was educated in Rowan County schools, was a U.S. Army veteran and a Baptist. He retired from W.S. Tyler Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwyndola Cook Shoaf, and a daughter, Vickie Shoaf Eagle.

Carl Franklin Stiller, 85, Wiley School Apartments, Ridge Avenue, formerly of Monroe Street, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at his home.
Born Oct. 4, 1916, in Rowan County, Mr. Stiller was a son of the late Will Tom and Martha Jordan Stiller. He attended Salisbury schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was employed by Spur Oil Co. for 16 years and retired from Dolly Madison Co. after 16 years.

Ellese Bost Wagoner, 86, Salisbury, died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.
Born March 28, 1915, in Salisbury, Mrs. Wagoner was a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Laura Misenheimer Bost. She graduated from Boyden High School in 1932 and was a homemaker.
She was an active member of Haven Lutheran Church, where she was a charter member of WELCA; a member of the Minnie Phillips Circle, Willing Workers Sunday School Class and Altar Guild; and chairman of both the Decorating Committee and the Quilting Group.
Her husband, Kenneth L. Wagoner, died Oct. 22, 1996, and a daughter, Mildred Wagoner Cooper, died May 9, 2000.
