Tonya Fox plans on doing quite a bit of shopping tonight at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh.
If Fox has her way, she will be heading back there on Friday night.
Fox and Kristy Woodson travel to Raleigh today to compete in this weekend’s 2A state championships. The Hornet duo will take it relatively easy tonight before hitting the courts tomorrow morning.
If Fox and Woodson make it through two rounds, their stay in Raleigh will continue through Saturday for the state semifinals.
That could lead to one more shopping spree.
“We play Friday,”Fox said. “If we make (the semifinals), go out and eat and go shopping some more, play Saturday and hopefully win.”
“Maybe she doesn’t get out often,”Salisbury coach Chris Myers joked. “They’ll have me running all over the place I’m sure.”
If Fox sounds like she has a routine down, it’s because she’s no stranger to the state championships. This is Fox’s fourth appearance overall, her second in doubles.
Fox and Michelle Leonard advanced to the state semifinals in doubles two years ago, and Fox lost in the first round of singles play in 2000.
“It’s a privilege,”Fox said.“It’s what I mainly look forward to the entire year. It’s a good feeling of accomplishment.”
Woodson, a junior, is making her first trip to the championships and couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I’m so excited because I’ve never been before,”she said. “It’s going to be so much fun. I was so excited to get there, it was a really big deal for me.”
The task at hand isn’t lost on Fox or Woodson, who have a 24-2 doubles record this season. Myers has watched his teams come away with good results but without a championship trophy the last few years.
Expecting a title this season might be a little far-fetched, but Myers doesn’t want to shortchange his top doubles team.
“The last two years we’ve gotten third in the state, made it to the state semifinals, so I’d say at the minimum that should be our goal,”Myers said.
“After that, who knows? It would be nice to at least make it to Saturday and hopefully play for a state title.”
Even if that means an extra night in Raleigh for Myers, who already has a plan of action for tonight.
Said Myers, “Maybe I’ll hide in a coffee shop somewhere.”
