Vera Suther Black
KANNAPOLIS — Vera Suther Black, 84, formerly of 512 Bostian Ave., died Monday (Oct. 22, 2001) at Preston House, Charlotte, after several years of declining health.
Born June 3, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Black was a daughter of the late W.J. and Mary Shulenburger Suther. She retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1 sewing room after many years.
A member of New Hope Lutheran Church, she was active with the Women of the Church. She was a former member of United Commercial Travelers in Kannapolis.
Her husband, W.F. Black, died April 5, 1997.
Survivors include sons W. Terry Black, Concord, Phil Black, Charlotte, and Dwight Black, Mooresville; sister Ruth S. Lackey, Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, New Hope Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Bost and the Rev. Maurice Staley. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Norma Peeler Boger
ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Wednesday for Norma Peeler Boger, 66, Rockwell, who died Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after several years of declining health.
Born April 13, 1935, in Rowan County, Mrs. Boger was a daughter of the late Murphy and Mary Catherine Peeler. She was a weaver at Fieldcrest Cannon Mills Plant 1, Kannapolis, and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include husband Thomas Boger, whom she married July 3, 1953; daughter Pamela B. Baker, Rockwell; brother Bill Peeler, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Bishop Robert Gaddy
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in Wadesboro for Bishop Robert L. Gaddy, who died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001).
He was a former pastor of Lilly’s Chapel Church of God, Salisbury, serving for 19 years.

Richard C. Glascock
MOCKSVILLE —Richard Clyde Glascock, 81, Wilkesboro Street, died Monday (Oct. 22, 2001) at his home.
Born June 6, 1920, in Davie County, Mr. Glascock, a son of the late Marshall E. and Katherine Rollins Glasscock, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was in the auto body business for 20 years and worked at Ingersol-Rand for 19 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star. A member of Mocksville Masonic Lodge AF & AM 134 for over 50 years, he was a past master and certified lecturer.
Survivors include wife Lois Cartner Glascock; daughters Delaine Mehder, Greensboro, Cindy Schroder, Asheboro, and Katie Bridgers, Hillsborough; brothers Thomas Glasscock, Lewisville, and Everette Glasscock, Mocksville; sisters Mary Spillman and Jane Tutterow, both of Mocksville, and Dorothy Taylor, Olin; and two grandchildren.

Allene B. Hassell
The funeral will be Wednesday for Allene Brinkley Hassell, 99, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Oct. 21, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare after a period of declining health.
Born March 29, 1902, in Johnson County, Mrs. Hassell was a daughter of the late William Roy and Lillie Barbour Brinkley.
She was educated in the Kinston schools; received a bachelor of arts from East Carolina University; a master of arts from Duke University; and did graduate studies at Duke University and the University of North Carolina.
An educator, she taught in the Kinston and Durham County schools and was director of curriculum and guidance in Durham County schools. She organized and directed the first county-wide high school guidance program in North Carolina.
Co-author of “Personal Analysis and Future Planning,” a text for group guidance at the junior high level, she organized and directed a county-wide student loan fund.
She was vice president of North Carolina Parent-Teacher Association; president of Supervisor of Education, central North Carolina; and was a life member of State Parent-Teacher Association. In 1952, she was Durham Mother of the Year in Education.
Listed in Who’s Who in American Education and North Carolina Lives in 1965, she retired that same year.
She wrote three published family histories, served on the Durham Youth Board, Better Health Foundation and Nursing Education Board and was a former member of the Altrusa Club and Delta Kappa Gamma in Durham and Salisbury.
A life member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church, she was a member of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Durham, and First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.
Her husband, Herman L. Hassell, died in 1952. A son, Alfred S. Hassell, died in 1996.
Survivors include daughter Mary Martin Little, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis, pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.
