Dr. J. David Alford

MOORESVILLE — The funeral will be Monday for Dr. James David Alford, 63, who died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at his residence.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Baptist Church, Mooresville, conducted by Dr. E. Harvey Rogers and Dr. Robert Jackson. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zebulon City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-5 p.m. today, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. The body also will lie in state at Zebulon Baptist Church from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday.

Michael E. Chavis

CHINA GROVE—Michael E. Chavis, 53, 515 Kirk St., died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) in his home after six months of declining health.

Born Nov. 30, 1947, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Eloise Snipes Chavis, of Kannapolis, and the late Foster Chavis.

Mr. Chavis was a veteran of the USArmy, having served from March 1969 to March 1973.

He was self-employed with Michael E. Chavis Electric Co. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Darlene Hunter Chavis, of the home; sons David M. Chavis, Concord, and Jason E. Chavis, China Grove; brother Sandy W. Chavis, Charlotte; sisters Nancy Butler, Enochville, Pat Stewart, Red Bay, AL, Linda Chavis, Christy Davis and Janet Beaver, all three of Kannapolis, and Mary Kendall, China Grove.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday at Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker, the Rev. Dean Hunter and the Rev. Arthur Heggins. Inurnment will be at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Regina H. Davidson

COOLEEMEE—Regina H. Davidson, 80, Church St., died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born April 22, 1921, in Phelps, NY, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Alice Wolvin Hicks.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Paul T. Davidson; one brother and five sisters.

Survivors include sons Bruce F. Davidson, Salisbury, and James P. Davidson, Cincinnati; daughter Sherry DePalma, Cooleemee; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services: A memorial service will be held at 8 tonight at Davie Funeral Service Chapel conducted by the Rev. Shelby Harbour. Burial will be at National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

James Hancock

KANNAPOLIS—James Wesley Hancock, 84, 806 Bostian Ave., died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) at Universal Health Care after two months of declining health.

Born Sept. 7, 1917, in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late Robert Lester and Daisy Rollins Hancock.

He was a retired employee of Cannon Mills Plant #1 after 49 years of service.

He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carnelle H. Hancock.

Other survivors include son Jimmy Hancock, Kannapolis; sisters Billie Jean Knight, Pageland, SC, Myrtle Jordan, Mt.Crogan, SC, Dorthy Gulledge, Kathleen Baker and Grace Hancock, all of Kannapolis; brothers Fred Hancock, Lancaster, SC, Elbert Hancock, Pageland, SC and AD Hancock, Kannapolis; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan and the Rev. Vance Edwards. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at Lady’s Funeral Home. Other times, the family will make headquarters at the residence.

Dan Lee Neider

Dan Lee Neider, 53, 424 Park Ave., died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at his residence.

Born March 16, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Mr. Neider was the son of the late Clarence and Wyonona Jensen Neider. He was educated in the Salt Lake City Schools. He had two years of undergraduate studies at the University of Utah and was a graduate of Utah TEchnical College with an AA degree in Architectural Technology.

A Construction Project Manager for ADW Architecture of Charlotte, he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the National Historic Preservation. He was an Eagle Scout.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Voigt Neider, whom he married May 27, 2000.

Other survivors include daughters Jennifer Neider, Angela Spiers and Wendy Weeks, all of Las Vegas; step-children Ashley, David and Nicholas “Nick” Edwards, of the home; and six grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl R. Sachtleben, senior minister, and the Rev. John B. Tucker, associate minister.

The body will be cremated and inurnment will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church Columnbarium.

Visitation: The family will be at the residence on Park Ave.

“Deck” Phillips Sr.

James Dextral “Deck” Phillips Sr., 78, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) at his home after two years of declining health.

Born January 15, 1923, in Greenville, SC, Mr. Phillips was the son of the late James V. and Elizabeth Duncan Phillips.

A veteran of World War II, where he served with the USArmy, he retired as a nursing assistant with the Salisbury VA Medical Center after 22 years of service.

He was a member of the Salisbury Moose Lodge #900, “GARS,” and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Hall Phillips, whom he married Jan. 10, 1947.

Other survivors include sons James D. “Jim” Phillips Jr, Columbia, SC and Lee Phillips, Salisbury; daughter LuAnn Shue, Salisbury; sister Beatrice Nicholson, Lowell, NC; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 12 p.m. Tuesday at the James C. Lyerly Chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dale Robertson, pastor of N. Main Baptist Church. Burial will be at Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lyerly Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence on Mahaley Ave.
