Mary Upright Adams

MOORESVILLE — Mary Kathryn Upright Adams, 94, 5970 Hwy. 152 W., died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at her home.

Born July 7, 1907, in Mooresville, Mrs. Adams, a daughter of the late David Eli and Mary Louise Foutz Upright, was a graduate of Farm Life School. She was a homemaker.

A member of Concordia Lutheran Church, China Grove, she was involved with WELCA and taught Sunday school.

Her husband, Clyde Butler Adams, died Dec. 8, 1987.

Survivors include sons Frank E., Larry E. and Clyde B. Adams Jr., all of Mooresville, Hubert R. and Billy L. Adams, China Grove, Paul T. Adams, Kannapolis, and Donald W. Adams, Amelia,Va.; daughters Evelyn Smith, New London, Janette McDonald, Mooresville, and Joanne Haynes and Carolyn Morrow, both of China Grove; 33 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Concordia Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Sipe and the Rev.Carl Haynes. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home on Highway 152.

Martin Dennis Clark

ALBEMARLE — Martin Dennis Clark, 77, 121 Garfield Ave., died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Services: 11 a.m.Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel.Burial, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Oakboro.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Garfield Avenue.

David Perry Davis

David Perry Davis, 58, 240 Swink Ave., died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C., from a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 7, 1943, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Davis was a son of John “J.D.” Davis, Kannapolis, and the late Sue Childers Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Owner and operator of Dave’s Homes, he was a member of Lane Street Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Virginia O’Neal Davis; daughters Donna Davis Hines, Salisbury, and Penny Sarno, Kannapolis; sons John Dwight Davis II, Salisbury, and David Perry Davis Jr., Polkton; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lane Street Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Greg Pierce. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park,China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

Pauline DeBerry

Pauline Margaret DeBerry, 63, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at her home.

Jonathan David Gross

SPENCER — Jonathan David Gross, 27, Spencer, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Sarah Haynes

There will be no services or visitation for Sarah Elizabeth Haynes, 81, 612 E. Horah St., who died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Brightmoor Nursing Home.

Born June 8, 1920, in Rowan County, Miss Haynes was a daughter of the late Arthur and Maggie Verble Haynes.

She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was formerly employed at Star Laundry.

Survivors include sister Lottie Roberta Boger, Salisbury.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Joe Hunter

Joe Hunter, 81, Plano, Texas, a former Salisbury resident, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) in Plano, Texas.

Born March 29, 1920, in Raleigh, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Joseph Orr and Elaine Kluttz Hunter. He attended Catawba College and was a salesman.

He was a past president of the Salisbury Jaycees and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Salisbury. In 1952, he lead a campaign for Rowan County’s first tax evaluation in 25 years.

Survivors include wife Mary Frances Clark Hunter, whom he married Sept. 19, 1942, in Spencer; son Joseph “Chip”Hunter III, Germantown, Tenn.; daughter Elaine McGehee, Plano, Texas; brother Hugh D. Hunter, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home chapel, Plano, Texas. Burial at Ridgeview Memorial Park, Plano.

Visitation:3-5 today at the funeral home.

 

Don Franklin Joines

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Don Franklin Joines, 85, Kannapolis, who died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001)at Avante of Concord.

Born Feb. 3, 1916, in Wilkes County, Mr. Joines was a son of the late James Thomas and Annie Mae Childers Joines. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On April 3, 1978, he retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, No. 2 weave room after 48 years of service. He was a member of Landis Baptist Church.

His wife, Faye Pennell Joines, died March 6, 1999.

Survivors include brother Clegg Joines, Kannapolis.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

James E. Kesler

James Everett Kesler, 51, Bringle Ferry Road, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 26, 1950, in Rowan County, Mr. Kesler was a son of Willie Pearl Gaines, Salisbury, and the late Lawrence Kesler. He was a graduate of R.A. Clement High School.

A member of Faith Christian Tape Ministry, he was employed as a machine operator at Thermoid and H&B Industries.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Vada Hailey Kesler; sons James L. “Jimmy” Kesler, Charlotte, and Edward Eugene and Brian Kesler, both of Salisbury; stepson Lamar Hailey, Salisbury; daughter Fabia Kesler, Lexington; brothers Robert Kesler, Atlanta, Ga., Joseph Kesler, Woodleaf, and Steve Kesler, Salisbury; and sisters Arlene Howard and Virginia Montgomery, both of Woodleaf.

Van Paul Lefler

RICHFIELD — Van Paul Lefler, 77, 21850 Rogers Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Nov. 30, 1923, in Stanly County, Mr. Lefler, a son of the late Charles Edward and Mae Moose Lefler, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A retired plumber, he had also worked with Almond Brother Poultry and was a member of New Bethel Lutheran Church.

A son, Van Paul Lefler Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Lois Marie Moss Lefler; son John Lefler, Misenheimer; daughters Paula Sue L. Simpson, Norwood, and Janet L.Tanner, Granite Quarry; stepdaughters Carol Springer and Janice Kimrey, both of Albemarle; sisters Jane Bryant, Sykesville, Md., and Faye Zukowski, Sunnywood, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, New BethelLutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Fred Mitschke. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home on Rogers Road.

Brenda Kay Little

CONCORD — The funeral will be Saturday for Brenda Kay Little, 25, 6209 Hardwood Lane, who died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001).

Born Aug. 13, 1976, Miss Little was a daughter of Tuyet Thi Little,Kannapolis, and Fred Howard Little, Concord. She was a 1994 graduate of Northwest Cabarrus High School.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother David Little, Concord; and half sister Kim Lynn, Concord.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Bennie Burgess. Interment,Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Gladys K. Morris

LEXINGTON — Gladys Victoria Kearns Morris, 89, Linwood Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after three days of illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Sheets Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Sue Bowman, Odell Owen Road.

 

Everette J. Parker

ALBEMARLE — Everette Jennings Parker, 72, 32078 ChapelRoad, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Bethlehem Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

Jimmy ‘Snuffy’ Smith

DURHAM — The funeral was Wednesday for Jimmy “Snuffy” Smith, 48, 7040 Calais Drive, formerly of Salisbury, who died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001).

Born in Nashville,Tenn., Mr. Smith was a son of Dorothy Smith, Chapel Hill, and the late Thomas E. Smith. He was a member of Homestead Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Kelly Smith; daughters Nikki and Samantha Smith, both of Durham; sons Patrick and Benjamin Smith, Salisbury, and Christopher Smith, Durham; sister Judy Sanders, Durham; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Clements Funeral Service chapel. The Rev.Chris Gaynor officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
