Mary K. Adams

CHINA GROVE —Mary Katherine Adams, 94, 5970 Hwy. 152, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at her home.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Thomas Frank Brown

LEXINGTON — Thomas Frank Brown, Lexington, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after several months of illness.

Born May 28, 1928, in Davie County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Jesse and Jettie Brown. He was educated in the Davie County schools and attended Davidson Community College.

A veteran, he received the Victory Medal for his service in World War II.

He has held various positions in law enforcement. He retired as a lieutenant from the Lexington Police Department after more than 30 years.

A member of First Baptist Church, Village Drive, he was on the trustee board, chairman of the finance committee and a member of the board of directors for First Baptist Childcare. His civic and fraternal affiliations include American Legion Post 255, Corinthian Lodge 17, Mocksville; Jno G. Lewis Consistory 326, Lexington; Al Kattab Temple 201, Lexington; and ABC Board and Davidson County Crime Stoppers.

Survivors include wife Elizabeth Holmes Brown; daughters Dr. Raynorda Faye Brown, New Orleans, La., and Rhonda Kaye Brock,Winston-Salem; son Reginald Thomas, Raleigh; sister Ida Brown Goolsby, Mocksville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, First Baptist Church, Village Drive, conducted by the Rev.Glenn Pettiford. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Marcelle Beaver

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Friday for Marcelle Beaver, 74, Rockwell, who died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,Salisbury.

Born Dec. 5, 1926, in Avery County, Mrs. Beaver, a daughter of the late Emmet G. and Sophia Buchanan Mondy, was a 1943 graduate of Cranberry High School, Newland. She retired as a tanner frame operator from Fieldcrest Cannon Mills after 37 years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

A son, Gene Brown Beaver, died July 21, 1996.

Survivors include husband Harry Brown Beaver, whom she married July 22, 1944; daughters Elizabeth Gayle Beaver and Brenda Beaver Smoot, both of Rockwell; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James C. Melton. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

 

Vacie Mills Crum

MOORESVILLE — Vacie Mills Crum, Court Lane, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville.

Born March 14, 1958, in Princeton, W.Va., Mrs. Crum was a daughter of the late Hobert and Veda May Bailey Mills. She was a former medical secretary at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.

Survivors include husband Randall J. “Randy” Crum, whom she married April 26, 1985; sons Randall J. Crum Jr. and Wayne Lucado, both of Mooresville; brothers Jimmy Dean and Roy Allen Mills, both of Mooresville, and Charlie Hobert Mills, Statesville; sisters Jackie Bell, Lashmeat, W.Va., Lucy Mills, Coal City, W.Va., and Ethel Shrewsbury, Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Woody Stacy. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

David Perry Davis

David Perry Davis, 58, 240 Swink Ave., died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Frank J. Goodman

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Friday for Frank James Goodman, 83, 550 Old Linn Road, who died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 16, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman, a son of the late James and Hannah Goodman Goodman, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He retired in 1980 as a finish carpenter from Isenhour Brothers Construction Co.A veteran, he was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, VFW Post 09089 and DAV.

Survivors include wife Alice Beaver Goodman; daughter Sandy Mitchell, China Grove; sisters Ola Parker, Concord, and Beulah Moose, Rockwell; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on Old Linn Road.

Lee Mac Hess

Lee Mac Hess, 79, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at his home after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 6, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Hess, a son of the late William Franklin and Lillie Castor Hess, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He received a Purple Heart for his service in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He retired from Southern Railway after 44 years. A member of Main Street United Methodist Church, he was a former vice general chairman of Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks.

His wife Frances Loflin Hess, died July 16, 2001.

Survivors include daughter Patty Farmer,Spencer; one grandson; one great-grandson.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.William Ragsdale, pastor, Main Street United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Lynn Ogburn, pastor, Yadkin United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Myrtle H. Howell

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Myrtle Harwell Howell, 85, formerly of Kannapolis, who died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. She was a resident of the Meadows of Rockwell.

Born June 16, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Howell, a daughter of the late Willie G. and Katherine “Kate” Goodnight Harwell, was a member of Charity Baptist Church. She was previously employed in the shoe department at Carolina Maid,Granite Quarry.

Her husband, James Homer Howell, died in 1976; son James Baxter Howell died Oct. 13.

Survivors include daughter Mary Howell White, Kannapolis; sons Gary Howell, Kannapolis, and Billy Howell, Winston-Salem; brother Dwight Harwell, Concord; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday,Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond and the Rev. Gene Beaver. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Mary Elizabeth James

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Tuesday for Mary Elizabeth Cruse James, 73, 102 Elizabeth St., who died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 30, 1928, in Concord, Mrs. James was a daughter of the late George Dewey and Nellie Mae Ritchie Cruse. She was a former member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Concord.

Her husband,Charles R. James, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son John Cook, China Grove; brother George Louis Cruse, Maryland; sisters Esther C.Cruse, China Grove, and Edith C. Pickett, Clayton,N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Concord.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Elizabeth Street.

 

Don Joines

KANNAPOLIS — Don F. Joines, 80, West 18th Street, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at a local nursing home.

Lois Thompson

MOORESVILLE — Lois Renegar Johnson Thompson, 85, West Park Avenue, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First Presbyterian Church. Burial, Willow Valley Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Steven Allison Sheets

A memorial service was held today for Steven Allison Sheets of Salisbury, whose body was found Oct. 7, 2001.

Born March 20, 1957, in Rowan County, he was the son of John W. Sheets of Salisbury and Betty M. Woodle of Salisbury. He attended West Rowan High School.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include grandmother Rosa Sheets, Salisbury; stepmother Susie Sheets, Salisbury; stepfather Harris Woodle, Salisbury; brothers Johnny R. Sheets, Salisbury, and Larry W. Sheets, Cleveland; stepbrother Joseph Woodle, Florence, S.C.; son Steven D. Sheets, Lexington; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Salvation Army Chapel, conducted by Capt. Terry Ray.

Gregory Scott Stanley

The funeral will be Saturday for Gregory Scott Stanley, 24, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 22, 1976, in Rowan County, Mr. Stanley was a son of Jean Moose Stanley, Salisbury, and the late Frederick Oscar Stanley. He was a graduate of East Rowan High School.

An employee of Freightliner Truck Manufacturing plant, Cleveland, he was a member of Canaan Baptist Church and East Rowan YMCA.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include maternal grandmother Doris Moose, Spencer; half brothers Ricky Dale Stanley, Mocksville, and Freddy Dean, Billy Gordon and Jimmy Ray Blackwell, all of Salisbury; and half sister Debbie Diane Stanley, Mocksville.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Canaan Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Graham. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

ALBEMARLE —Clegg Hall “Tip” Thompson, 87, 33264 Old Salisbury Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday,Fairview Memorial Park, for family and friends. Memorial, 3 p.m. Friday, Grace Baptist Church.

Visitation: In the church fellowship hall after the service.

Julius C. Tutterow

MOCKSVILLE — Julius C. Tutterow, 82, Cherry Hills Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 1, 1919, in Guilford County, Mr. Tutterow was a son of the late John Nelson and Carrie Jane Smith Tutterow. He retired from Ingersol Rand and was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife of 60 years Virginia Foster Tutterow; sons David “Gene” Tutterow, Advance, and Donald Ray Tutterow, Cooleemee; daughters Linda Keller, Mocksville, Bonnie Zauder, Dothan, Ala., and Susi Koontz, Winston-Salem; brother Paul Tutterow, Cooleemee; sisters Alva Howard and Eva Deadmon, Mocksville, and Doris Berrier, South Carolina; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 tonight, Concord United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Andrews and the Rev. Robert McMillen. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites conducted at 11 a.m.
