Teddy ‘Butch’ Carter
HIGH POINT — Teddy “Butch” Charles Carter, 52, 630 Grand St., a former resident of Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at his home.
Born Jan. 17, 1949, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Carter, a son of Theodore Roosevelt and Norma Loflin Carter, was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was employed by Highland Yarn Mills for 27 years and worked with Brown’s Painting Co. for the last six years. He was a member of Allendale Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Tammy Kincaid Carter, whom he married Nov. 25, 1982; daughters Angie Haynes, High Point, and Monica Hamilton and Samantha Carter, both of the home; sons Anthony “Tony” Carter,Cherryville, and Michael Hamilton Jr., of the home; sisters Phyllis Mundy Williams, High Point, and Patty Primak, Asheulot, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Allendale Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Metters and the Rev. David Younger. Burial, Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the church.

James ‘Walt’ Baker
SPENCER — James Walter “Walt” Baker, of Spencer, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Sept. 28, 1929, in Princeton, Mr. Baker was a son of Sadie Sasser Baker Brown, Spencer, and the late Edward Delton Baker.
Mr. Baker was a 1949 graduate of Spencer High School. He received his bachelor of science degree from Appalachian State University in 1953 and his master’s degree from ASU in 1956.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was an instructor and basketball coach while in the service.
In 1958, he began his coaching and teaching career as the first head basketball coach at Spencer High School, later North Rowan High School.He continued in this position until 1977, when he briefly retired with a winning record and 231 wins. His teams won nine championships and were state runners-up in the Western North Carolina High School Athletic Association in 1979.
Mr. Baker served as athletic director at North Rowan High School for 22 years, bringing numerous improvements to the athletic department.
He was also assistant principal at North Rowan for 16 years. After again retiring briefly in 1988, he came back for one year as principal. In 1989, after 33 years in education, he retired in 1989.
From 1983 until 1987, he was on the board of directors for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. In 1990, he was honored for his service to North Rowan and his contributions to high school athletics in North Carolina by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and Coaches Association.
In 1995, the field house at North Rowan High was dedicated as the Walt Baker Field House in honor of his service and leadership in high school sports.
Mr. Baker served on the Spencer Planning Board and received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1961. He coached the Western North Carolina High School Athletics Association All-Star basketball game and coached the organization’s CivitanClassic All-Star Game in 1968.
He served on the board of directors for Salisbury Rowan Sport Hall of Fame.
A member of First Baptist Church, Spencer, Mr. Baker served as chairman of the deacons, chairman of the Board of Trustees, superintendent of the Sunday school, superintendent of the Training Union and was the church engineer.
His stepfather, J.L. Brown, preceded him in death.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Carolyn Thornton Baker; sons James “Jim” Walter Baker Jr., Concord, and Charles “Chip” Edward Baker, Tallahassee, Florida; brother William “Bill” Baker, Spencer; and three grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial Gardens, Salisbury.

LANDIS — Louise Deal Dellinger, 86, formerly of West Fifth St., Landis, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at Trinity Oaks, Salisbury.

Marie Rita Lawler
Marie Rita Lawler, 77, Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at The Laurel’s of Salisbury after a period of declining health.
Born March 20, 1924, in New York City, Miss Lawler was a daughter of the late Joseph and Annabelle Naughton Lawler. She attended Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church School, Bronx, N.Y.
A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she had earlier been a member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, Bronx, N.Y.
She is survived by cousins.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Convent Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Dinh. Burial, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.

CLEVELAND — James McKay Robeson Jr., 55, 2575 Phifer Road, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 17, 1946, in Robeson County, Mr. Robeson was a son of Rosa Leonell Prevatte Robeson, Davidson, and the late James McKay Robeson III. A graduate of Lumberton High School, he was a maintenance worker at KoSa.
He attended Statesville Seventh Day Adventist Church.
