Betty C. Christy
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Betty C. Christy, 68, 5264 Old Concord Road, who died Friday (Oct. 12, 2001)at Thoms Rehabilitation Center, Asheville.
Born Feb. 18, 1933, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Christy was a daughter of the late Carlton F. and Beatrice Reese Collins. She owned and operated Gift Corner.
She was a lifetime member of Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, where she had been president of the United Methodist Women, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and past chair of the administrative board. She was also active on the conference level, where she had served on the Board of Pensions and Finance Committee and currently was on the board of the Children’s Home and Aldersgate Retirement Community.
A former teacher in the Kannapolis City Schools, she was a member and past state president of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary teachers organization.
Survivors include husband John Christy and brother Allan Collins, Kannapolis.
Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Duncan and Dr. Harold Bales. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 6-8:30 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Jim and Bonnie Christy, 5248 Old Concord-Salisbury Road.

Lucille P. Fleming
MOCKSVILLE — Lucille Pulliam Fleming, 71, 3807 N.C. Highway 601 South, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born Oct. 11, 1930, in Davie County, Mrs. Fleming, a daughter of the late William and Sarah Pulliam, was educated in Davie County schools. In November 1995, she retired from Rowan Regional Medical Center’s dietary department.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.
Her husband,Floyd Fleming, died in February 2001 and a son,Kim Pulliam, died June 6, 1992.
Survivors include other sons Gregory and Shannon Pulliam, both of Mocksville, Eugene
Pulliam,Troy, and Harvey Pulliam, Spencer; daughters Machelle Pulliam and Tammy P. Jones, both of Mocksville, and Venessa Hearst, Salisbury; brother Harvey Pulliam, Mocksville; sisters Jessie Hodges, Ruth Mayfield and Ruby Peterson, all of Winston-Salem, and Camilla Martin, South Zone Park, N.Y.; and several grandchildren.

Angela B. Hawkins
The funeral will be Tuesday for Angela Dawn Beaver Hawkins, 24, 1209 Davis St., who died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born April 5, 1977, in Concord, Mrs. Hawkins was a daughter of Wanda Goodman and Bobby Leonard Beaver,
Enochville. A 1995 graduate of South Rowan High School, she attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
She was employed at Merita Bread Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she and her husband co-headed the nursery department .
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Joseph B. “Joe”Hawkins, whom she married May 17, 1997; son Jordan Blake Hawkins, of the home; daughters Brooklyn Nicole and Carolina Elizabeth Hawkins, both of the home; twin sisters Melinda Lynn and Melissa Lee Beaver, both of
Enochville; maternal grandparents Paul and Ruby Johnson Goodman, Landis; paternal grandparents Sara Jordan Goodman and step-grandfather Harold Goodman, Landis, and Charles Beaver and and step-grandmother Allene Beaver, Sanford, Fla.; and paternal great-grandfather Calvin Jordan, Mooresville.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, minister. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Oakdale Cemetery, Spencer.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of her mother and father-in-law Walter and Elizabeth Hawkins, 408 S. Rowan Ave., Spencer.

James Baxter Howell
ROCKWELL — James Baxter “Big Jim” Howell, 65, Rockwell, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at her home.
Born April 23, 1936, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Howell was the son of Myrtle Harwell Howell, Meadows Retirement Center, and the late James Homer Howell. He was a graduate of
J.W. Cannon High School, Kannapolis, and received an accounting degree from Salisbury Business College.
A disabled veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a self-employed accountant. A Morman, he was a member of the Rowan Amateur Radio Society, Ham Radio Operator WG3H-Extra Class.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Carolyn Blackwelder Howell, whom he married May 15, 1964; son William J. Howell, Salisbury; daughters Jamie H.
Felker, Lexington, Cindy Starr, Bothell, Wash., Saundra Williams, Van Nuyes, Calif., and Susan
Kalmuk, Hollywood,Calif.; brothers Gary E. Howell, Kannapolis, and Billy H. Howell, Winston-Salem; sister Mary H. White, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gail Park Thompson
Gail Park Thompson, 60, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at her home.
Born Sept. 20, 1941, in Rowan County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Jasan Leon and Helen Louise Cruse Park. She was a 1959 graduate of East Rowan High School.
She retired from Duke Power Co. after 35 years in the accounting department. She was active with the Duke Retirees and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include brother Jason L. Park Jr., Rockwell.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William S.
Ketchie. Burial, church cemetery.
