Jerry C. Barnette

Jerry Cleveland Barnette, 93, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) in the W.G. VA Medical Center after 10 years of declining health.

Born on Oct. 8, 1907, in Greenville County, S.C., he was a son of the late Elizabeth Clayton Barnette and Charles Ebenezer Barnette.

He was educated in the Greenville County Schools.

Mr. Barnette was an assistant manager at McLellan’s in Salisbury and later manager of McLellan’s in Concord.

For 25 years he was a railway postal clerk and he also worked at the U.S. Post Office in Charlotte before retiring in 1973.

Mr. Barnette was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Concord Lions Club.

A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving two-and-a-half years in north Africa and Italy.

He was a member of the American Postal Workers Union, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harold B. Jarrett Post 342.

A daughter, Angela Barnette Schmiedel, preceded him in death, dying May 31, 1980.

Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn Arey Barnette, whom he married on Nov. 1, 1936; a daughter, Beverly Jean Barnette of the home; a brother, John E. Barnette, Landrum, S.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: a private service will be held at Lyerly Funeral Home with the Rev. Brit Baldwin, VA chaplain; burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veteran’s Council.

Visitation: the family will be at the residence; the body will remain at the funeral home.

Willie Mae Campbell

Willie Mae Leazer Campbell, 84, 420 Partee St., died Saturday (October 6, 2001) at her home.

Rowan Funeral Service is serving the Campbell family.

 

Frontis Lentz Corriher

MT ULLA—Frontis Lentz Corriher, 90, 875 Cricket Lane,died Friday (October 5, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 7, 1911, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Marshall Lee and Adea Rea Corriher. He was a retired floor sander and farmer.

His wife, Myrtle Dixon Corriher, preceded him in death on May 22, 1994.

Survivors include sons Everette Corriher and Edward Corriher, both of Salisbury, and Gene Corriher, Mooresville; sisters Gertrude Melchor, Salisbury, and Mary Chappell, Mooresville; six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Senter Primitive Baptist Church in Crumpler, conducted by Elder James Langham, Elder Bob Asber, and Elder James McNeill. Burial will be at the church.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. today at Neill Funeral Home.

Joanna Elmore

KANNAPOLIS—Joanna Basinger Elmore, 74, 2126 S. Main St., died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born April 18, 1927, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Carl Lee and Ruth Sides Basinger. She was educated in the Rowan County Schools.

Mrs. Elmore was employed in sales and accounting. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church.

Survivors include son Robbie Elmore, Concord; daughters Cathey L. Motlow, Lexington, Alison Royal, Mooresville, and Martha Ann Thompson, Concord; brothers Charlie Basinger and Harold Basinger, both of China Grove; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Charity Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond. Burial will be at West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Memorials: Charity Baptist Church, 2420 Brantley Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

J.C. Herring

CONCORD — J.C. Herring, 77, of 4201 Sapp Road, Concord, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born on July 18, 1924, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late William M. Herring Sr. and Bertha Curlee Herring.

Mr. Herring received numerous decorations while serving for 21 years in the U.S. Army. He served in both World War II and the Korean War.

He worked in the carpenter shop at Cannon Mills Plant 6 for over 20 years.

His wife, Mildred Moose Herring, died in 1998.

Survivors include: four sons, William M. “Mike” Herring, Concord, Jerry Herring, Grand Ledge, Mich., Johnny Herring, Raleigh, and Randy Herring, Concord; two daughters, Starr H. Bennett, Concord, and Janet H. Powell, Kannapolis; a brother, William M. Herring Jr., Concord; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Concord with the Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson; burial in church cemetery with military rites by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at Whitley’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis; at other times the family will be at the home.

Donald Honbarrier Sr.

BELMONT —Donald Eugene Honbarrier Sr., 71, of Bowen Drive, Belmont, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at his home.

Born in Rowan County, he was a son of the late James Love and Thelma Williams Honbarrier.

He was a graduate of Woodleaf High School and was a retired supervisor with Duke Power with 38 years service.

He was with the Buck Steam Plant until 1959 when he transferred to the Allen Steam Plant at Belmont.

Mr. Honbarrier was co-owner of Southern Accents Home & Hobby in Shelby following his retirement from Duke Power.

He formerly lived in the Potneck area of Rowan.

He was an active member of the Charlotte Church of Christ.

Survivors include: his wife of 51 years, Eva Shoaf Honbarrier, Belmont; daughters, Denise H. Lyerly, and Debi Humphries, both of Belmont, Donna H. Stewart, of Shelby; a son, Donald Honbarrier Jr. of Goode , Va; a brother, James E. Honbarrier of Salisbury; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Bumgardner Chapel at McLean Funeral Directors, Belmont with Wendell Powell officiating; a committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Chapel in the Pines at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Inez Morrison Pope

CHINA GROVE—Inez Morrison Pope, 91, 1270 Partee Lane, died Friday (October 5, 2001) at Brian Nursing Center after being seriously ill for two weeks.

Born Sept. 27, 1910, in Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late John and Candice Moses Morrison. She was educated in the Iredell County Schools.

A retired domestic worker, she was a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Life Member Council Stewardess Board #1 and Home Mission.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Flake A. Pope, on November 29, 1999.

Survivors include daughters Carolyn P. Hinton, Landis; sisters Delia Stover and Anne Lewis, both of Baltimore; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The Pope family is being served by Noble & Kesley Funeral Home.

 

John Waddell Sr.

ROCKWELL—John Thomas Waddell Sr., 86, 3580 Organ Church Road, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at Hefner VA Medical Center.

Born June 5, 1915, in Jefferson, Ga., Mr.Waddell was the son of the late Robert and Mattie Stringer Waddell. He was educated in the Georgia schools.

He was retired from Cannon Mills as an inspector, having also served during World War II where he served in the South Pacific.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Waddell was preceded in death by his son, John Thomas Waddell Jr. in December 1961.

Survivors include his wife, Nonnie Basinger Waddell of the home; sons Curtis Linn Waddell, Rockwell and William Lee Waddell, Granite Quarry; daughter Judy Marie Waddell, Faith; brother Lewis Waddell, Salisbury; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Flem Otey. Burial will be at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, with graveside rites conducted by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Robert Lee Walls

WINDER, GA—Robert Lee Walls, 83, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at his residence in Georgia.

Born March 8, 1918, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late John F. and Anna May Capel Walls. He was educated in the Woodleaf Schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, he was employed for International Paper Co. for 23 years before his retirement.

He was a member of Otterbind Methodist Church, Dover, Pa., and the Statham American Legion Post #0163, Statham, Ga.

Survivors include wife, Stella Allison Walls, whom he married Sept. 24, 1942; son Ronald L. Walls, Winder, Ga.; daughters Barbara W. Meredith and Kathy Walls, both of Delray Beach, Fla., and Linda W. Moses, Overland Park, Kan.; brothers Carl Walls, Albemarle, and Samuel McIntyre, Salisbury; sisters Anne Keller, Charlotte, and Jeanette Owens, Woodleaf; and four grandchildren.

Services: A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Tony Jordan, Minister of Gays United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Gays Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Walls will remain at Summersett Funeral Home until taken to the cemetery fir the graveside service.
