Peggy P. Heintz

KANNAPOLIS —Peggy Peninger Heintz, 1112 Grove St., died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Irene B. Herrin

KANNAPOLIS — Irene Barnhardt Herrin, 87, formerly of North Poplar Ave., died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at a local nursing home.

Velma C. Holcomb

CHINA GROVE — Velma Chewning Holcomb, 89, 640 Stirewalt Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Walter R. Jennings

Walter Richard Jennings, 76, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at his home.

Born July 29, 1925, in Tamaqua, Pa., Mr. Jennings was a son of the late James Peter and Della Bierman Jennings. He graduated from Pottsville Area High School in Pennsylvania. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines.

For 15 years, he owned and operated Jennings Market Basket in Pottsville, Pa. He was formerly employed with Core States Bank, Pottsville, and at F &M Bank, Granite Quarry.

Survivors include wife Gladys Johns Jennings, whom he married Jan. 5, 1948; daughter Kathryn Jennings Conrady, Salisbury; sister Jeanna Jennings Bellock, Pottsville; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Penny Godfrey. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Kathryn Conrady in Salisbury.

Ricky Dale Jones

KANNAPOLIS — Ricky Dale Jones, 43, 1530 Longbow Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Feb. 6, 1958, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Jones was a son of Lois Deese Jones, Kannapolis, and the late Robert Jones. While in school, he had perfect attendance for 12 years. He graduated in 1976 from A.L. Brown High School.

For many years, he was employed with Ingersol-Rand Inc., Davidson.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son Brian Jones, Kannapolis; daughter Krysta Jones, Kannapolis; brothers Jerry Jones, China Grove, and David Jones, Kannapolis; and sister Cathy Upright, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Myers. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Lois Deese Jones, 102 Arlene Ave.

 

Macie B. Koontz

The funeral will be Friday for Macie Broadway Koontz, 80, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after five weeks of serious illness.

Born Nov. 10, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Koontz was a daughter of the late Jones Franklin and Tempie Myers Broadway. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and at Kings Business College.

She was a secretary for Rowan County Environmental Services and was a member of Canaan Baptist Church.

A son, Michael Grady Koontz, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Walter Grady Koontz, whom he married Oct. 11, 1947; son Wayne Koontz, Salisbury; daughter Jayne Walton, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Bob Eller and the Rev. Bruce Graham.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Mabel Freeze Lentz

Mabel Freeze Lentz, 98, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after two months of serious illness.

Born Nov. 30, 1902, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lentz, a daughter of the late Robert and Florence Bostian Freeze, was educated at FarmLife School. She was a homemaker.

The oldest member of Haven Lutheran Church, she was in the Daniel-Lingle Sunday school class, WELCA, Wagoner Sunday school class and the Leisure Group. She was a former member of the Friendly Bible class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Franklin Lentz, and a granddaughter.

Survivors include son Robert “Bob” Lentz, Wilmington; daughters Rachel Mesimore, of the home, and Rebecca Curlee, Blairsville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 1 p.m. Friday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald W. Fink. Private burial at Green Lawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Robert Frank Lynch

KANNAPOLIS — Robert Frank Lynch, 70, 1528 Buffalo St., died Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 19, 1931, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Lynch was a son of the late Albert and Minnie Shook Lynch. He retired in 1994 from Cannon Mills Plant 1. He had worked in the slasher room and later in towel printing.

In his earlier years, he was active in track racing. He later worked with small mechanical engines and was a CB operator who used the handle “Red Wing.”

His wife, Dorothy Johnson Lynch, died Jan. 18, 1996.

Survivors include daughter Shelby L. Carpenter, China Grove; brother James Lynch, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joe Rahme and the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Virginia W. Peeler

Virginia Walters Peeler, 87, Salisbury, died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001) at Lutheran Homes at Trinity Oaks.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Linda Broome Rufty

The funeral will be Friday for Linda Diane Broome Rufty, 54, 206 Carolyn Road, who died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at her home. She had been ill for several years.

Born Oct. 21, 1946, in Union County, Mrs. Rufty was a daughter of Troy and Ethel Helms Broome. She was educated in the Cabarrus County schools and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Paul Rufty; son Mark Dalton, China Grove; daughters Kandy Horne, China Grove, and Patricia Rollins and Kim Helms, both of Kannapolis; brother Troy Broome Jr., Kannapolis; sister Lynn Broome, Greenville; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Lakeland Memorial Park, Monroe.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

 

Price W. Sipes

MOUNT ULLA — Price Washington Sipes, 71, 3595 Fannie Sloan Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at his home.

Born Feb. 22, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Sipes was a son of the late Coleman L. and Addie Eades Sipes. He was a retired pulp wood cutter and farmer.

His wife, Jettie Campbell Sipes, died March 28, 2001.

Survivors include son Richard L. Sipes, Mount Ulla; daughter Linda Sipes Atwell, China Grove; brothers Coleman Sipes, Salisbury, Bill Sipes, Mount Ulla, Leon Sipes, Mooresville, and James Sipes, Greenville; sister Nora Sipes Davis, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Mount Mourne Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Ownbey and the Rev. Dr. Carl Settle. Burial, Unity United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. Friday, Neill Funeral Home.

Lewis Earl Sloter

Lewis Earl Sloter, 90, 245 Camelot Drive, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Don Hamilton, with whom he made his home.

Born March 7, 1911, in Hundred, W.Va., Mr. Sloter was a son of the late Worthington Monroe and Ethel May Hostutler Sloter. He was educated in the Marion County schools, Fairmont, W.Va., and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A mold maker and inspector with Owens-Illinois Glass Plant, Fairmont, W.Va., and later retired from Anchor-Hocking Glass Co., Connellsville, Pa., after 25 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His wife, Lois Boyce Sloter, died in 1972.

Survivors, in addition to his daughter, include son Dr. Lewis Sloter II, Chevy Chase, Md.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: The body will be cremated. Burial will be in Fairmont, W.Va., at a later date.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Douglas ‘Doug’ Taylor

LEXINGTON —H. Douglas “Doug” Taylor, Tussey Road, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Services: Mass of Christian burial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Entombment at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Tussey Road.

 

Jean A. Williams

MAIDEN — Jean Arndt Williams, 65, 2761 Water Plant Road, sister of Hilda Pyatt, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) at Catawba Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, Maiden. Burial, Maiden City Cemetery.

Visitation: At the church after the service.
