Grady E. Corriher

KANNAPOLIS — Grady Eugene Corriher, 84, 1012 Hoke St., died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a year of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.

Born June 23, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Corriher was a son of the late Henry W. and Carrie Bell Shuping Corriher. He was a 1935 graduate of China Grove High School.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was a staff sergeant with the 336th Army Air Borne Division, serving with Air Offensive in Europe, and was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He worked for Johnson Furniture and later with Jackson Park Furniture, which became Discount Furniture Outlet World. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, he held many offices including head usher. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include wife Vera Bost Corriher; daughter Betty Jones, Kannapolis; sister Willene Barnhardt, China Grove; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dale Tanner and the Rev. Tom Tucker. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum. Military rites by DAVChapter 27.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Hoke Street.

Hazel R. Fowler

BURLINGTON — Hazel Roberts Fowler, 84, formerly of Burlington and Kannapolis, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Fairhaven Nursing Home, Birmingham, Ala.

Born May 12, 1917, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Fowler was a daughter of the late Charlie Jones “C.J.” and Ann Wilma Nance Roberts. In 1990 she retired after 32 years from Burlington Merchant Association and Credit Bureau. She was a member of Front Street Methodist Church.

Her husband, Lury Clinton “Red” Fowler, died in 1959.

Survivors include daughters Sylvia F. Traynham, Hoover, Ala., and Sarah Ann F. Hooper, Burlington; sister Joan R. Bray, Mooresville; brother Farrell Roberts, Burlington; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William Simpson Jr. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Margaret M. Gotwald

Margaret Leila Miller Gotwald, 76, 322 W. Miller St., died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Gotwald, a daughter of the late Paul Domer and Margaret Daly Miller, was educated in the Silver Springs, Md., schools. She attended Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pa.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

A son, Frederick Kimball Gotwald, died in 1968.

Survivors include husband the Rev. Frederick Gebhart Gotwald II, whom she married Oct. 10, 1947; sons Paul Michael Gotwald, Salisbury, and Luther Alexander Gotwald V, Denver, Colo.; daughter Victoria Anne Gotwald Rufty, Salisbury; brother the Rev. William M. Miller, Schaefferstown, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Thursday, St. John’s Lutheran Church chapel, conducted by the Rev. Carl R. Sachtleben, senior pastor, and the Rev. John B. Tucker, associate pastor.

Visitation: After the service.

‘Chuck’ Honeycutt

The funeral will be Wednesday for Charles “Chuck” David Honeycutt, 48, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born July 27, 1953, in Burke County, Mr. Honeycutt was a son of Lottie Williams Honeycutt, Salisbury, and the late John Lee Honeycutt. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A truck driver for Terminal Trucking Co., Concord, he was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church,

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Mackie Palmer Honeycutt, whom he married June 3, 1972; brothers Robert “Bob” and Samuel Honeycutt and Johnny Lee Honeycutt Jr., all of Salisbury; and sister Becky Haynes, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: At the church after the service.

Charles R.McRorie

CONCORD — Charles Ralph McRorie, 85, 664 Jackson Terrace, died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Rick D. McRorie, 952 Groff St.

Memorials: Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, 2425 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203; or donor’s choice.

 

Richard N. Sheets

KANNAPOLIS — Richard Nathan Sheets, 73, 1511 BuffaloSt., died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 1, 1928, in Wilkes County, Mr. Sheets was a son of the late Roosevelt and Minnie Sheets. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A Baptist, he retired from G.G. Ray Roofing and Siding.

His wife, Mildred Virginia Sheets, died Sept. 4, 2001.

Survivors include sons James and Gene Bare, both of Kannapolis; brothers Fred Sheets, Landis, and Carl Sheets, Winston-Salem; sisters Clara Roten and Dare Miller, both of Glendale Springs, and Edna Overcash, Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster and the Rev. Willis Parrish. Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of granddaughter Kathy Hubbard.

Eva C. Summerlin

ALBEMARLE — Eva Cranford Summerlin, 84, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m.Wednesday, Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation: There will be no formal visitation.

Isaiah ‘Ike’ Westbrook

BADIN — Isaiah “Ike” H. Westbrook, 70, 617 Marion St., died Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 2, 1931, in Catawba County, Mr. Westbrook was a son of the late Luther Samuel and Lena Williams Westbrook. He graduated from West Badin High School in 1951 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He retired from Alcoa Badin Works after 31 years, where he was a member of the 25 Year Service Club. He was on the local 303 Union Executive Board for 18 years and was a former officer of Badin Employees Credit Union.

He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church; Badin AF & AM, Prince Hall affiliated; and was a former member of the Optimist Club.

Survivors include wife Lois Curtis Westbrook; sons Maxe E. Westbrook, Apex, and Johnny L. Westbrook, Badin; daughter Pamela Richardson, New London; sister Clara Westbrook, Badin; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David L. Thompson. Burial,Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: The family will be at the home on Marion Street.

Rubie Thomas Woods

CHARLOTTE — Rubie Thomas Woods, 79, 924 Log Cabin Road, formerly of Albemarle and Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born Feb. 10, 1922, in Stanly County, Mrs. Woods, a daughter of the late George Paul and Verla Staton Thomas, was educated in the Stanly County schools. She retired after 28 years from Pelton and Crane.

She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Missionary Circle and a former member of the Eastern Star.

Her husband,Willie Woods, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Carl H.Clark, Charlotte; daughter Maxine C.Townsend, Charlotte; stepsons Albert Reid and Edward Tate, both of Charlotte, and June Reid, Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday,Ebenezer Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lorenza Lynch and the Rev. Dr. A.B. Sutton. Burial,Oakboro City Cemetery, Oakboro.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home on Log Cabin Road.
