CULLOWHEE — South Rowan’s Janetta Heggins scored eight points for Western Carolina in its 72-64 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday night.
Heggins shot 4-for-5 from the floor and added five rebounds and three assists for the Catamounts (4-1), whose only loss was at
UNC.
East Rowan’s Nicole Loggins played only two minutes for Western, but she hit her only field-goal attempt.
Both Heggins and Loggins are sophomores and are former county players of the year.
- McCullough has 11 in loss
ASHEVILLE — North Rowan’s Bryan McCullough scored 11 points Wednesday night for
UNC-Asheville in a 77-71 home loss to East Tennessee State.
McCullough, a 6-foot-6 true freshman, was Rowan County’s player of the year last season.
McCullough’s North teammate, Marcus Reddick, is redshirting at Asheville this season.
Kickoff for tonight’s game between A.L. Brown and Franklin is set for 7:30 p.m.
Directions to Franklin are as follows:Take I-40 West past Asheville and take exit 27 toward Waynesville. Then take exit 81 toward Franklin/Atlanta.
Take the third Franklin exit, and go up the ramp to the stop sign and turn right. The library will be on the left after a big curve to the right, and Franklin High will be on the right after a big curve to the left.
WINGATE —Catawba College’s women will face West Virginia State in the Wingate University Basketball Classic tonight at 8 p.m.
The Lady Indians also will be busy in the event Saturday, facing Virginia State at 4 p.m.
- Ramsey starts strong at BA
Belmont Abbey’s women’s basketball team has won only two of its first five games, but South Rowan’s Latoya Ramsey is off to a good start for the Crusaders.
Ramsey, a junior guard, is averaging 11.8 points a game. She’s 12th in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference in scoring.
- Salisbury girl wins regional
Salisbury’s Erin Witalison triumphed in the Punt, Pass and Kick Regional Championships on Sunday.
Witalison competed at half time of the Carolina Panthers’ game at Ericsson Stadium.
Witalison, a student at Erwin Middle School, is now eligible to advance to the finals of the AFC Championship game in January. Witalison’s score must be among the top four in her age group in the country in order to advance.
- Southeast beats West Middle
The Southeast Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team defeated West Rowan on Tuesday 27-24.
Zach Mills scored eight points and Melvin West seven to lead Southeast.
Salisbury’s boys and girls swimmers swept a home tri-meet with North Iredell and Western Guilford on Wednesday.
Salisbury’s points scored 134 points to top Western Guilford (112) and North Iredell (44).
Salisbury’s girls piled up 163 points to beat Western (117) and North (24).
Ben Clark was the boys swimmer of the meet. He won the 50 freestyle.
Clark and the Hornet 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams posted state qualifying times.
JayHenderlite won the 500 free.
The Hornet girls dominated, winning eight of 11 events. The girls swimmer of the meet was Kady Brown.
All three girls relay teams posted state qualifying times. Jenny Oh won the 100 fly and 100 back. Taylor Sexton won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Courtney DeSorbo won the 500 free. All posted state qualifying times.
