KANNAPOLIS—Betty Sue Kirkland Earnhardt, 66, 907 Evie Drive, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center after a short illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1935, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Earnhardt was a daughter of the late George Baxter and Rosa Bell Kerley.
She worked for 35 years at Cannon Mills Plant 1 and later for 12 years with Southern Manufacturing Inc. In her later years, she worked as a part-time health care worker.
Survivors include daughter Karen Tallmon, Kannapolis; son Barry Kirkland, Maryville, Calif.; sisters Polly Carter, China Grove, Stella Woodard, Kannapolis, and Virginia Kirkland, Hiddenite; and two grandchildren.
Services: Graveside service, 2 p.m. Monday, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6-p.m. tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Karen Tallmon, 5521 Enochville School Road, Lot 8, Kannapolis.

Rosario Garritano
Rosario L. “Roy” Garritano, 70, Salisbury, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at Avante Nursing Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 26, 1931, in Manhattan, N.Y., he was the son of the late Maria Strano and Andrew Garritano.
Mr. Garritano retired after more than 20 years as a New York City policeman.
He was a past commander for the VFW and a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include companion Maureen McCandless Gioello; sons Ralph and Andrew Garritano, both of New York; daughters Mary Kovach and Cindy Garritano, both of New York; brothers John Garritano, Charlotte, and Anthony Garritano, San Francisco; sisters Mimi and Andrea Garritano and Lucy Fichera, all of New York, and Farina Hefferon, New Jersey; and a number of grandchildren.
The body will be cremated.

KANNAPOLIS—Lois Kay Lisk, 56, 2910 Laura Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center from injuries sustained in a fire early Saturday Morning.

Ruth Alene Marcum
MOUNT ULLA—Ruth Alene Thornhill Marcum, 76, Corriher Grange Road, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at her residence.
Born March 22, 1925, in Logan County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Allen and Clara Ruby Thornhill. Mrs. Marcum was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by husband James Harrison Marcum and two grandchildren.
Survivors include companion James Edward Bragg; sons Larry Marcum, Oceana, W.Va., and George Marcum, Mount Ulla; daughter Alice Faye Marcum, Oceana, W.Va.; sister Juanita Vickroy, Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Susan Hisey Nichols
Susan Carol Hisey Nichols, 52, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) in Darlington, S.C., from injuries in an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 12, 1949, in South Amboy, N.J., Mrs. Nichols was a daughter of Florence Cottrell Hisey Mytinger, Port St. Lucie, Fla., and the late Homer Harvey Hisey. She was educated in the South Amboy, N.J., schools, graduated from Hoffman High School and worked for Hamilton Construction, Gold Hill. She attended St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Curtis Nichols, and daughter Sherri Middleton died in the same accident.
In addition to her mother, survivors include son Robert Hisey, Salisbury; step-son William Harrision Nichols, Palm City, Fla.; daughter Kelly Brown, Hallyville, Ala.; step-daughters Christina Rathbun, Turbotville, Pa., and Cynthia Nichols, Salisbury; brothers David Hisey, Jensen Beach, Fla., and Ronnie and Glenn Hisey, both of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; sisters, Gloria Honeycutt, Laurel Lake, N.Y., and Donna Powers, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services: A memorial service will be held at a later date. The body will be cremated.

Curtis Monroe Nichols
Curtis Monroe Nichols, 52, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) in Darlington, S.C., from injuries in an automobile accident.
Born July 13, 1949, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Erma Towner Nichols, Salisbury, and the late William E. Nichols Sr.
Educated in the Olean, N.Y., schools, Mr. Nichols was employed by Century Place, Salisbury.
A Catholic, he served in the Army 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War.
His wife, Susan Nichols, and step-daughter Sherri Middleton died in the same accident.
In addition to his mother, survivors include son William Harrison Nichols, Palm City, Fla.; step-son, Robert Hisey, Salisbury; daughters Christina Rathbun, Turbotville, Pa., and Cynthia Nichols, Salisbury; step-daughter Kelly Brown, Hallyville, Ala.; brothers William Nichols Jr, Olean, N.Y., and Joseph Nichols, Salisbury; sisters Barbara Wooster, Palm City, Fla., Bonnie Lattin, Williamsport, Pa., Virginia Jedrasko, Bradford, Pa., and Beverly Green, Jersey Shore, Pa.; and several grandchildren.

Dennis Lee Owens
Dennis Lee Owens, 68, Salisbury, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at the residence of his daughter in Tucson, Ariz.
Born July 16, 1933, in Cleveland, he was a son of the late George Barber Owens Jr. and Connie Bell Harkey Owens. Educated in the Rowan County Schools, Mr. Owens attended Rowan Technical Institute.
A veteran of the U.S.Navy, he retired after 20 years of service, having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Prior to entering the military, he worked for Southern Railway, and after his service time, he worked at the VA Medical Center, before retiring in 1993.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFWPost 3006 and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was active in the Rowan Veterans Council and an avid turkey shooter.
He was a life member of the DAV and Kennedy Hall American Legion Post 106, where he served as post commander.
Survivors include daughters Denise Owens “Dee Dee” Polches, Princeton, Maine, and Danielle Owens “Dani” Taylor, Tucson, Ariz.; sisters Ethel Mae Foster, Margaret Elaine Walser, Linda Kay Goodman and Barbara Ann Gentle, all of Salisbury, and Mary Ruth Gardner, Graham; and one grandchild.
Services: Graveside service, 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the VA Chaplain. The body will be cremated. Burial, National Cemetery, military rites, Navy Reserve Unit, Charlotte, and the Rowan Veterans Council. Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

‘Libby’ Kirk Solomon
CHINA GROVE—Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Kirk Solomon, 81, 2220 Daugherty Road, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a period of declining health.
Born June 15, 1920, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Zimra C. and Jennie Beaver Kirk.
Educated in the Rowan County Schools, Mrs. Kirk retired from the packing room of China Grove Cotton Mill. She was a member of Lutheran Chapel Church, where she participated in Sunday Night Circle, Chapelaires, Minnie Patterson Sunday School Class and Meals on Wheels.
Her husband, Lonnie Raiefield Solomon, died on May 1, 1974.
Survivors include son Arnold Solomon, Kannapolis; brother Earl Kirk, China Grove; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Harry Scott Vogler Sr.
COOLEEMEE—Harry Scott Vogler Sr., 58, Davie Street, died Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at Northern Surry Hospital of injuries sustained in a fall during a hunting accident.
Born May 11, 1943, in Davie County, Mr. Vogler was a son of the late Buddy Vogler and the late Dorcas Vogler Mesimer. He was employed as a project manager with HMS Construction, Advance, and was an avid hunter and golfer.
A town commissioner, he was a veteran of the Air Force and attended Cooleemee Presbyterian Church. He was active in the South Davie Booster Club and little league baseball and football.
Survived include wife Brenda Whitlock Vogler; son Scott Bogler Jr., Cooleemee; daughters Kim Harris, Harmony, and Kelly Cartner and Starr Snow, both of Mocksville; and seven grandchildren.

Thomas ‘Gene’ Wilson
Thomas Eugene “Gene”Wilson, 66, Salisbury, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center unexpectedly.
Born June 15, 1935, in Kannapolis, he was a son of Agnes Rary Wilson, Mill Bridge, and the late John Lindsey Wilson.
Educated in the Mount Ulla schools, Mr. Wilson worked for Cannon Mills and later as a mechanic for Rives Motor Co. before retiring. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Salisbury.
In addition to his mother, survivors include wife Anne Yost Wilson, whom he married Nov. 23, 1957; son Thomas E. “Tom”Wilson Jr., Mount Pleasant; sisters Priscilla Elaine Hemmings and Mary Elizabeth Lowman, both of Salisbury, and Brenda Kay Ward, Mill Bridge; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
