Albert ‘Skeet’ Alley

Albert Lee “Skeet” Alley, 74, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at his home. He had been seriously ill three weeks.

Born Oct. 3, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Alley was a son of the late Joseph Franklin and Argie Leonard Alley. He graduated from East Spencer High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He retired from Duke Power’s Buck Steam Plant in 1984. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Scottish Rite of Winston-Salem, Oasis Shrine Temple, Charlotte, Rowan Shrine Club and Joy Club of Trading Ford Baptist Church and a member and past master of Spencer Masonic Lodge 543.

Survivors include wife Frances Harkey Alley, whom he married June 20, 1953; son Randy Alley, Salisbury; brother Jewell Alley, Salisbury; and sisters Wilma A. Butler, Dorothy A. Butler, Swanna A. Cooper and Irmena A. Copley, all of Salisbury, and Betty Bowler, Hamlet.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, minister of Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

Ruby Goforth Brooks

Ruby Goforth Brooks, 89, Salisbury, died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 6, 1912, in Alexander County, Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late Richard Burnis and Viola Margaret Laws Goforth. Educated in Alexander County schools, she was a homemaker and former employee of Beattie’s Restaurant.

She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and the Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Ralph Brooks, died March 22, 1992.

Survivors include sons Carl Fortner, Norfolk, Va., Charles Lee, Richard B. and Bobby G. Fortner, all of Salisbury, and Billy Ray Fortner, Falling Rock, Ky.; daughters Viola Hudgins, Salisbury, Jeri Poole, Gold Hill, and April Whitaker, Lexington; brothers Lee and Earl Goforth, both of Taylorsville, Homer Goforth, Charlotte, and Lester Goforth, Crossville, Tenn.; sisters Ollie Elder, North Wilkesboro, and Alma Elder, Taylorsville; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, minister of Enon Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Willie Cline

KANNAPOLIS — Willie Cline, 87, 6241 Old Concord Road, died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at her home.

Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

John Manley

NEW LONDON — John Fitzgibbon Manley, New London, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born in Fulton County, Ga., Mr. Manley was a son of the late Robert Herbert and Annie Marie Fitzgibbon Manley. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and earned a law degree from Atlanta Law School. He attended West Virginia University.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C.

He was formerly employed as a rate officer at Norfolk-Southern Railroad and was a former president of the New London Lions Club.

A daughter, Margaret M. Carter, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Lucy Colleen Moore Manley; daughters Melinda M. Little, Vashon, Wash., Maureen M. Freshhour, Washington, D.C., and Marisa M. Pharr, Asheville; brother Malcolm Manley, Cleveland, Ga.; sister Mary M. Kelley, Augusta, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Visitation: No formal visitation.

Timothy ‘Tim’ Dry

Timothy Lee “Tim” Dry, 38, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) in Darlington, S.C., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born April 3, 1963, in Rowan County, Mr. Dry was a son of Bobby Lee and Agnes Hill Dry, Gold Hill. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1981 and was a heavy equipment operator with Jones Brothers Inc., Mount Pleasant.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Gold Hill, and Piedmont Pulling Association of Oakboro.

His companion, Sherry N. Middleton, died in the same automobile accident.

Survivors include son Jason Timothy Dry, of the home; daughters Kimberly Lynn Dry, Salisbury, and Amber Dry, Gold Hill; stepsons Robert Mishak, Gold Hill, and Billy Mishak, Salisbury; stepdaughter Crystal Mishak, Salisbury; sister Angelia Dry, Rockwell; and four step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Gold Hill, conducted by the Rev. Floyd Bost, interim pastor. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of his parents in Gold Hill.

Ada Waller Perkins

KANNAPOLIS — Ada Waller Perkins, 87, 7845 Howard Ave., died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at her residence.

Born March 14, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Perkins was a daughter of the late Sanford P. and Minnie Ervin Waller. She retired from the spinning room of Cannon Mills.

Her husband, Leroy Perkins, died July 22, 1976.

Survivors include daughter Shirley Whitley of Albemarle; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step-great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Sonny Waller. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Randy Linn Safrit

NEW LONDON — Randy Linn Safrit, 55, 308 Spring St., died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 27, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Safrit was a son of Betty Safrit Plummer of China Grove and the late J.W. Safrit.

A graduate of South Rowan High School and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, he was a paramedic with Stanly County. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, China Grove.

Survivors include sons Chris Safrit, Mooresville; brother Reggie Safrit, China Grove; stepbrother the Rev. Dr. Mark Plummer, Charlotte; stepsister Julia Owen, Charlotte; and stepfather Carl Plummer, China Grove.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times, the family will be at the home of his mother, 613 Shue Road, China Grove.

Aloysius Skokowski

A private graveside service will be held for Aloysius S. Skokowski, 81, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury following a brief period of declining health.

Born Sept. 19, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Skokowski was a son of the late Stanislaus and Tereasa Marczak Skokowski. He graduated from Emerson Vocational High School, Buffalo, N.Y., and was a U.S. Army veteran of the 6th Aircraft Repair Unit during World War II.

He retired after 40 years as a purchasing agent with Snyder Tank Corp. of Hamburg, N.Y. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

His wife, Grace Lukomskie Skokowski, died July 2, 1998.

Survivors include daughters Rita Peters, Salisbury, Pat Thomas, Lakeview, N.Y., and Tereasa Skokowski-Morongo, California; brothers Casey and John Skokowski, both of Cheektowaga, N.Y., sisters Jessie Sutton, Lancaster, N.Y., Virginia Woley, Holland, N.Y., Millie Sobczak, Sister Mary Valentine and Sister Mary Martinia, all of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Private graveside service to be held at a later date.

Visitation: None.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Jesus V. Vasquez

MOCKSVILLE — Jesus Vargas Vasquez, 21, Windward Circle, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Survivors include three sisters and three brothers.

Services: Service of celebration, 5-8 p.m. today, Emmanuel Evanjelica Church, Campbell Road, conducted by the Rev. Florentine Arcos.

The body was shipped to Acapulco, Mexico.

Graham Funeral Home is in charge.
