Catawba College won its 14th straight women’s basketball home game with an 85-52 win over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.
The win improves the Indians to 2-1, while Pfeiffer falls to 1-2.
Catawba jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead in the opening three minutes, but would suffer through a five-minute scoring drought as Pfeiffer roared back to take a 15-11 lead at the 11:44 mark of the half.
Dorthell Little broke the drought for Catawba with a jumper at the 10:16 mark to close the Lady Indians within 15-13. Then Ashley Cox scored five consecutive points to put Catawba ahead 23-21 with 4:15 remaining.
Pfeiffer would tie the score at 23-23, but did not score again until a 3-pointer by Shannon Reid with just 38 seconds left before the half.
Catawba outscored the Falcons 17-5 over the final 5:43 of the half to grab a 34-26 edge at the break.
Catawba used a smothering defense to open the second half, causing 11 turnovers in the first five minutes to build its edge to 55-26. From that point, Pfeiffer never got the deficit under 20.
Catawba shot 53 percent for the game, while holding the Falcons to just 33 percent and held a commanding 48-31 edge on the boards.
Sophomore Danyel Locklear recorded a double-double for the Indians with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Little had 19 points and seven boards, while Cox, a freshman added 15 points.
Reid was the only Pfeiffer player in double figures with 10.
