William W. Christie

MOUNT ULLA — William Warren Christie, 87, Mount Ulla, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at his home.

Born April 4, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Christie was a son of the late Joseph G. and Willie Mae C. Christie. A retired farmer, he attended Centenary United Church of Christ.

His wife, Mildred Brown Christie, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons William Warren Christie Jr. and Thomas Christie, both of Mount Ulla; sisters Annie C. Sharpe, Statesville, and Josephine C. Stamey, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Centenary United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marion Faulk and the Rev. John Miles. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

 

Donald W. Clayton

CHINA GROVE — Donald William Clayton, 69, 610 Brown Road, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at his home.

Born June 17, 1932, in Concord, Mr. Clayton was a son of the late Lee Roy and Louise Williams Clayton. He was educated in the Cabarrus County schools and at Rowan- Cabarrus Community College.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he retired as a machinist from Cannon Mills. He worked as a security officer.

A son, David Lee Clayton, died Jan. 11, 1997.

Survivors include wife Sarah Blalock Clayton, China Grove; son Donald W. Clayton Jr., Maiden; daughter Chris Clayton, Landis; half brother Billy J. Clayton, Manning, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. David Gullett. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Margaret F. Bowers

ALBEMARLE —Margaret Jane Fesperman Bowers, 87, 714 S. Fifth St., died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) in Stanly County.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Norview Gardens, Norwood.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Fifth Street.

Beulah M. Brewer

Beulah Misenheimer Brewer, 87, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at her home.

Austin A. Coppley

LEXINGTON — Austin Adam Coppley, 74, 232 Marlin Drive, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at his home after a year of declining health.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jersey Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Nannie Stevenson Cureton, 87, 1600 Wilkesboro Road, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001).

Charlotte Leach Dixon, 81, 539 Cedar St., died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at her home after a period of declining health.

John Neil Edwards

BLADENBORO — John Neil Edwards, 87, Bladenboro, the father of John Neil Edwards Jr., Landis, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Galeed Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the church.

Catherine Foxworth

Catherine Bass Weatherford Foxworth, 81, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at Mercy Hospital South, Charlotte.

Born April 11, 1920, in Salisbury, Mrs. Foxworth was a daughter of the late Lattie Benton and Ethel Kluttz Bass. She was educated in the Salisbury schools and a 1937 graduate of Boyden High School.

A homemaker, in earlier years, she was an operator at Southern BellTelephone Co. and worked in the credit union at General Electric. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the children’s department and was a member of Dorcus Sunday School Class.

Her first husband, Milton “Mick” Weatherford, died June 6, 1944, and her second husband, Ralph W. Foxworth, died March 3, 1970.

Survivors include daughter Cheryl W. Spence, Charlotte; and sisters Mona Shaw, Salisbury, and Hilda Palmer, Spencer.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m.Tuesday, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum, conducted by Dr. Dale Steel, interim pastor, First Baptist Church.

Visitation: The family will receive friends after the graveside service.

Mary Bates Gaines

The funeral will be Tuesday for Mary Jones Bates “Mother Gaines” Gaines, 87, 313 S. Clay St., who died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) in Spencer.

Born Dec. 27, 1913, in Rock Hill, S.C., Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Gabe Jones and Ola Branch Bates. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a former employee of Carolina Maid.

She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, the Fanny Ford Missionary Circle, deaconess board, usher board and pastor’s aide. Treasurer of Sunday School class 5, she was assistant chorister for the vocal choir and chairperson and treasurer of the Flower Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Gaines; and sons George Bates II, and Arthur “Moochie” Bates.

Survivors include stepson Alphonzo Gaines, Philadelphia, Pa.; daughters Mary “Tincy” Allison, East Spencer; stepdaughter Glenna Gaines Hinton, East Orange, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Trinity Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. George Hunter, pastor, and the Rev. Paul Jones. Burial, New Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter-in-law, Annie Bates, 1615 S. Salisbury Ave., Spencer.

Burton K. Harrison Jr.

CHARLOTTE — Burton K. “Sonny”Harrison Jr., 60, Charlotte, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at his home.

Born May 18, 1941, in Salisbury, Mr. Harrison was the son of the late Burton Kesler and Ruth Louise Fisher Harrison. He owned and operated Classic Hair for over 15 years.

He won awards for his painting in New York City, and in Salisbury. He traveled extensively and was a member of the Charlotte Humane Society.

Survivors include his partner of six years, Randy Edwards, Charlotte; sisters Patsy Praxton and Bobbie Troutman, both of Salisbury, and Nancy Knight, Rockwell.

Services: Memorial, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Charlotte Chapel, McEwen Funeral Service.

Visitation: At the funeral home after the service.

Gladys L. Hewitt

CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Tuesday for Gladys Jane Lentz Hewitt, 86, 306 Third Creek Church Road, who died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 21, 1915, in Iredell County, Mrs. Hewitt was a daughter of the late John Lee and Mary Catherine “Katie” Lentz Lentz. She was educated in the Iredell County schools and obtained her teaching certificate from Asheville Norman Teacher’s College.

She was a homemaker. A member of Elmwood United Methodist Church, she was church pianist and a Sunday school teacher, and president of the Elmwood United MethodistWomen. She had been president of Cleveland School PTA and Wayside Home Extension Club.

A volunteer with the American Red Cross, she was a substitute teacher and a member of Cleveland Lions Club, Bell South Pioneers, West Rowan Senior Citizens and East Iredell Senior Citizens Club.

On March 31, 1939, she married John Henry “J.H.”Hewitt Jr., who died in 1985.

Survivors include daughters Sarah Catherine “Cathy” Hewitt Neagle, Morehead City, Jane Carolyn Hewitt Shives, Midlothian, Va., and Elaine Clements Hewitt, Cleveland; sisters MabelLentz Reynolds, Wilmington, and Dorothy Lentz Lippard,Statesville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday,Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home chapel, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Sheri Barnes, the Rev. Ruth Atkinson and the Rev. Orrie Gaither. Burial, Iredell Memorial Gardens.

The family and members of Elmwood United Methodist Church will meet for lunch at Cleveland Lions Den on Cemetery Street from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Third Creek Church Road.

KANNAPOLIS — Doris Plyler Overcash, formerly of Kannapolis, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at Britthaven of Charlotte.

Robert A. Rathbun

Robert Alexander Rathbun, 75, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1926, in Hopkinton, R.I., Mr. Rathbun, a son of the late Fred and Mary Greene Rathbun, was educated at Westerly High School, Westerly, R.I. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army.

He retired as an industrial engineer fromAmerican Moisting Co., Cleveland. He later worked with Aeronca Air of Charlotte and Industrial Air, Greensboro.

A member of Grace United Methodist Church, he was in the Men’s Club and the Men’s Club at Milford Hills United Methodist Church. He regularly attended the weekly senior citizen dances at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and at senior centers in Cleveland, Concord and Kannapolis.

His wife, Gertrude Jones Rathbun, died Dec. 12, 1996.

Survivors include son Robert C. “Bob” Rathbun, Dunwoody,Ga.; daughter Susan Rathbun Grubb, Salisbury; brother Lester Rathbun, Hope Valley, R.I.; sisters Ellen Kenyon, and Jean Place,Charlestown, R.I.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m .Tuesday,Grace United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Powell, pastor, and the Rev. Bruce M. Jones. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Edward Smith

LEXINGTON — Edward Aloysius Smith, 84, formerly of James Street, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at Piedmont Retirement Center after a year of declining health.

Services: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Burial, 1 p.m., Belmont Abbey Cemetery, Belmont.

Visitation: None.

William DeMarcus Jr.

WINSTON-SALEM — The funeral was this morning for William Baleous DeMarcus Jr., 75, a Rowan County native, who died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001).

Born April 11, 1926, Mr. DeMarcus, was a son of the late William Baleous DeMarcus and Bessie Mae Helms. He was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College.

He retired from the North Carolina Highway Patrol after 26 years. After retirement, he worked for the North Carolina Probation/Parole Services.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 167, Piedmont Civitan Club and First Christian Church.

Survivors include wife of 49 years Corinne Stiller DeMarcus; son William Mark DeMarcus, Charlotte; daughter Lisa Corinne DeMarcus Parker, Woodlands,Texas; sisters Kathleen Mault, China Grove, and Edna Correll, Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were 11 this morning at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The Rev. James Cobb officiated. Burial was to be in the family plot in Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.
