Mark Wendell Argo

KANNAPOLIS — Mark Wendell Argo, 45, 711 Darty St., died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at home after two years of declining health.

Born May 10, 1956, in el Paso, Tex., Mr. Argo was the son of Don and Nancy Lisk Argo of Kannapolis. He was self-employed in construction, a member of West Point Baptist church and an avid outdoorsman.

In addition to his parents, survivors include daughters Ashley Elizabeth Argo, Charleston, S.C.; and Katie Frances Argo, Oakboro; son William Dean Argo, Oakboro; brothers Kirk Lynn Argo and Craig E. Argo, both of Kannapolis; and Todd Allan Argo, Columbia, S.C.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, West Point Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Greg Barefoot, the Rev. Tom Huneycutt and the Rev. Stan Fields. Burial in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

John Henry Champ

ADVANCE — John Henry Champ, 71, N.C. Highway 801 South, died Friday (Nov, 16, 2001) at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie in Advance.

Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Champ was the son of the late Lillie Gales and the late Will Champ. He was a retired crane operator for Sara Lee Corp. with 22 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II.

He was preceded in death by wife Martha Webb Champ and two daughters.

Survivors include sons John H. Champ Jr. and James C. Champ, both of Mocksville; daughters Peggy Jean Grimes and Crystal Lynn Champ, both of Advance; sister Mattie “Pat” Rebecca Taylor, Statesville; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Turrentine Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe Smith. Burial in Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: Body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Wade Hampton Cook

KANNAPOLIS — Wade Hampton Cook, 68, of 5703 Ashland Road, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at his home after two years of declining health.

Born Sept. 30, 1933, in Anson County, Mr. Cook was the son of the late Virginia Mae Price Cook and the late Fred Hampton Cook. He was educated in the Anson County schools and worked for 23 years for Pepsi.

He also worked for the Town of Landis for 13 years in the public works department.

Survivors include wife Gloria Davidson Cook; stepson Billy James, Landis; daughters Teresa Cook Ramey, Wildwood, Ga.; Candy Lynn Sain, Baton Rouge, La.; Scarlet Susan Rector, Summerville, S.C.; Lisa Cook Simpson, China Grove; brothers Joe Frank Cook, Monroe; and Donnie Cook, Wadesboro; sisters Annie Jane Cook McCombs and Shirley Elizabeth Flowers, both of Kannapolis; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Colonial Chapel of the Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Charles King. Burial in West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Jimmy Featherstone

KANNAPOLIS — Jimmy Ray Featherstone, 44, of Salinas, Calif., died Nov. 9, 2001, at Valley Medical Center, San Jose, Calif., from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident Nov. 4 in Gonzales, Calif.

Born in Salisbury, Mr. Featherstone was the son of Doris Holshouser, Kannapolis, and John J. Featherstone, Gold Hill. He moved to California in 1998 and was an avid hunter.

He worked as a property manager for three years and belonged to the North American Hunting Club.

In addition to his parents, survivors include wife Dr. Christine Ponizo Featherstone, Salinas; daughters Brandi Howard, Kannapolis; Monica Noriega, Salinas; and one grandson.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Carolina Memorial Park Chapel, Kannapolis.

Visitation: The body will be placed in Carolina Memorial Park Chapel. Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, Salinas, in charge.

Gladys Hewitt

Gladys Hewitt, 86, of the Lutheran Home in Salisbury and formerly of 306 Third Creek Road, Cleveland, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, Statesville, is in charge.

 

Cecil Christy Lanning

KANNAPOLIS — Cecil Barnard Christy Lanning, 87, of 1700 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach, Fla., and born in Cabarrus County, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord. Her brother, Quentin Barnard, lives in Gold Hill.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Allen Brindici. Inurnment at Florida Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: One hour before service at Whitley’s.

Memorials: September 11th Relief Fund, care of the United Way of New York City, 2 Park Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016.

 

Thelma M. Miller

ALBEMARLE — Thelma Ruth Mitchum Miller, 76, of 18887 Huneycutt Mill Road, died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Silver Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Helms. Burial in church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

 

Hazel Bolick Newell

The funeral will be Monday for Hazel Bolick Newell, 87, of Salisbury, who died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at her home after declining health.

Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Denver, N.C., Mrs. Newell was the daughter of the late Lelia Mae Adams Bolick and the late Junius Eleanah Bolick. She attended Burke County schools, Rutherford College and Ashbury College.

She did graduate work during the summers at UNC-Greensboro, University of Kentucky at Lexington, Wheaton College, Catawba College, Appalachian State University and UNC-Chapel Hill and traveled more than 9,000 miles across the United States and Canada.

She was a home economics teacher for five years and taught at Spencer Elementary and North Rowan Elementary for 25 years. She belonged to the International Pilot Club, many educational organizations and the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority. She received the N.C. Merit Teacher Award for three years and was featured in “Outstanding Elementary Teachers” of America in 1973.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Dorcu Sunday School Class, the Martha White Circle and the Gold and Silver Club.

Survivors include husband Edmond Bruce Newell, whom she married Dec. 20, 1940; sons John Richard Newell, Kingsport, Tenn.; Eugene Bruce Newell, Trout Creek, Mont.; sister Virginia Underdown, Lenoir; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts. The Dorcus Sunday School Class and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority will be seated as a group. Burial in Rowan Memorial Park

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times, at the home.

Rebecca Rigby Smith

ALBEMARLE — Rebecca Rigby Smith, 98, of 1015 Pee Dee Ave., died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital. Her son, Dr. Whitman E. Smith Jr., lives in Albemarle.

Services: 4 p.m. today at her home conducted by the Rev. Ben Wilson. Burial in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

 

Elizabeth Hill Spry

EAST SPENCER —Elizabeth Hill Spry, 79, of East Spencer, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Dec. 8, 1921, in Randolph County, Mrs. Spry was the daughter of the late Lena Mae Church Hill and the late Cicero Snow Hill. She was educated in Randolph County schools and was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include husband Charlie Thomas Spry of the home, whom she married Sept. 19, 1976; daughters Elizabeth Sink and Roxie Manuel, both of Mayodan, N.C.; and Addie Smith, Salisbury; brother Lee Roy Hill, High Point; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside 2 p.m. Monday, Forest Hill Memorial Park, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Charles Greene and the Rev. Jerry Whiteheart.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the residence and at the home of daughter Addie Smith. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edgar ‘Ed’ Ware

Edgar “Ed” Ware, 83, formerly of 4618 Martha’s Ridge Dive, Charlotte, died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at Brian Nursing Center in Salisbury after a serious illness of several weeks.

Arrangements are incomplete. Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.
