Monnie E. Ashby

ROCKWELL — Monnie Edward Ashby, 79, 240 Country Ridge Road, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2001) at his home after a period of declining health.

Born April 17, 1922, in Concord, Mr. Ashby was a son of the late John Edward and Callie Mitchell Ashby. He retired from Cannon Mills spinning room. He was a Baptist.

His wife, Willie Maude Waddell Ashby, died Feb. 18, 1996.

Survivors include sons James Edward Ashby, Mount Pleasant, and Robert Dean, John Terry, Willie Joe, Paul Douglas and Ray Lee Ashby, all of Rockwell; sister Aileen Fink, Rockwell; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Michael Taylor. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

James Ballard III

CAMDEN, S.C. —James Wesley “Jimbo” Ballard III, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001).

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Ballard was the son of Sandra Dover Honeycutt, Salisbury, N.C., and the late James Wesley Ballard Jr. He was employed by Asplundh Tree Experts.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Michelle Napper Ballard; sons Brody Humphries, Camden, and James W. Ballard IV, Rock Hill; daughter Jessica N. Ballard, Rock Hill; stepmother Fonda Ballard, Rock Hill; stepfather Richard Honeycutt, Salisbury, N.C.; brother David Ballard, York; stepbrother Lorne Walters, Rock Hill; half brother Mike Deal, York; sisters Crystal Ballard, Salisbury, N.C., and Kathy McManus and Angela Williford, both of Rock Hill; stepsister Linda Jordan,Rock Hill; and maternal grandmother Mary Deal, York.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Mount Olivet Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Lee. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Kornegay Funeral Home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

Matthew Clifton Flint

The funeral will be Wednesday for Matthew Clifton Flint, 66, 514 W. Council St., who died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Hefner VA Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Flint was a son of the late Charles Robert and Kathleen Dush Flint. He was a graduate of LaPorte High School, LaPorte, Ind., and Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was discharged with the rank of captain.

For a number of years, he was employed as a sales engineer with the Cincinnati Milling Machine Co. and was personnel manager with the JC Penney Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. He owned and operated Matt Flint’s Tinkers Dam Restaurant in Michigan City, Ind., for 10 years.

In 1982, he moved to Salisbury and worked in restoration of many old buildings and homes.He worked on the Steele House for over two years and then on the Kluttz Building, Holmes Building and the Old Cheerwine Bottling Co. building.

Survivors include wife Patricia Campbell Flint, whom he married June 9, 1957; daughters Kelly Elizabeth Flint, Mount Vernon, N.Y., and Sarah Kathleen Flint, Bloomington, Ind.; brothers Stephen Herbert Flint, Mohava Valley, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Stephen Morris, pastor, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Private burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation:At the funeral home after the service.

Bessie Pless Gray

CONCORD — Bessie Pless Gray, 91, 1165 Old Salisbury Road, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Mount Hermon Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times, the family will be at 25 St. Johns Church Road, Concord.

 

Lee Wesley Harris

NEW LONDON — Lee Wesley Harris, 89, 40111 U.S. Hwy. 52 N., died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at his home.

Born Jan. 23, 1912, in Montgomery County, Mr. Harris was a son of the late Travis L. and Ruth Saunders Harris. He retired from the Department of Agriculture and was a member of Prospect Baptist Church, Albemarle.

His wife, Mabel Hall Harris, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Jerrell Derwood Hall, Springfield,Va; daughter Ila Kay Loomis, Nevis, West Indies; brothers Oscar Harris, Midland, and Horace Harris, Springfield, Va.; sisters Mildred Alley, Broadway, Va., Lois Gibson, Albemarle, and Elizabeth Bryant, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Prospect Baptist Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rick Miller and the Rev. Bill Morrow. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Robert ‘Bob’ Jones

MOORESVILLE — Robert “Bob” E. Jones, 72, Mooresville, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Bobby Eugene Mason

NEW LONDON — Bobby Eugene Mason, 70, 32891 Hwy. 49, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

A native of Stanly County, Mr. Mason was a son of the late William Lloyd and Jessie Mae Sinclair Mason. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include wife Polly Gaynell Hahn Mason; sons Gene Mason, Albemarle, David Mason,Mount Pleasant, and Gregory Mason, Norwood; daughter Dawn Renee Hill, New London; brother William Lloyd Mason Jr., Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Antioch Baptist Church, Richfield, conducted by the Rev. Gene Sides. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial at Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle. Military rites by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.

 

Lydia L. Moody

STATESVILLE — Lydia Lamontagne Moody, 92, Statesville, mother of Patricia Van Heynigen, Mooresville, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Maple Leaf Health Care Center.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel, Mooresville. Burial, Lakeview Cemetery Park, Greensboro.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Veda Royal Nilo

MCGRADY — Veda Faye Royal Nilo, 80, McGrady, mother of James D. Nilo, Cleveland, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Avante at Wilkesboro.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Christian Fellowship Mission Church. Burial at Roberts Cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro.

Gladys Bostian Smith

LANDIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Gladys Hortense Bostian Smith, 80, 919 S. Zion St., who died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 1, 1921, in Concord, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Arthur Baxter and Hallie Mae Bostian. She was a graduate of Cannon High School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College.

She was the former secretary for St. John’s United Church of Christ and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Her husband, John William Smith, died Sept. 13, 1995, and a son, Harrison Baxter Smith, died Jan. 19, 1996.

Survivors include sons John William Smith II, Charlotte, and Charles David “Chuck” Smith, China Grove; daughter Alyce Mae Smith, Woodbridge,Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Graham Nahouse. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials: Trinity Lutheran Church, 108 W. Rice St., Landis, NC 28088.

 

Edward J. Straub

Funeral services will be on Sunday for Edward J. Straub, 90, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Service: Memorial, 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Bedsole, pastor, Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. The body has been cremated.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
