Bob L. Agee

LEXINGTON — Robert “Bob” Lee Agee, 41, Cedar Branch Road, Denton, died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Cedar Branch Road.

 

‘Gene’ Allman

KANNAPOLIS — Eugene “Gene” Bangle Allman, 77, 2803 Royal Ave., died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 29, 1924, in Concord, Mr. Allman was a son of the late Baxter Jones and Jennie Ameila Hopkins Allman. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include wife Eloise Johnson Allman; daughters Sheila Ann Allman Sheets and Ameila Elizabeth Allman, both of Kannapolis; son Randy Gene Allman, Kannapolis; brother Robert Lee Allman,Concord; and five grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Edwin Luther. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. Military rites by DAV Chapter 27 of Concord.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Royal Street.

 

Martha Miller Bartley

Funeral services were held Nov. 1 for Martha Miller Bartley, 85, 524 Idlewood Drive, who died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at her home.

Born Nov. 27, 1915, in Cairo, Ill., Mrs. Bartley was a daughter of the late Rosweell Cornie and Blanche Fluanna Miller. She was educated in the Cairo, Ill., schools and at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.

A retired public accountant, she worked in Naples, Fla.

Her husband, John Bartley Jr., died in 1987; son John Peter Bartley, Captain, ASAF, died in 1963; son Stephen C. Bartley died in 1989; and a daughter, Martha Ann Britto, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons Jesse Eugene Bartley, Salisbury, and John Edward Bartley III, Portland, Ore.; and sister Mrs. Bruce O. Ihlenfeldt, Corte Madera, Calif.

Graveside services were at Thistlewood Cemetery, Mounds, Ill., on Nov. 1.

Summersett Funeral Home was in charge.

William M. Ferrell I

The funeral will be Sunday for William McKinley Ferrell I, 62, 260 Leigh Drive, who died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 28, 1939, in West Virginia, Mr. Ferrell was a son of the late Mike and Melda Matney Ferrell Bentley. He was educated in the Gilbert,W.Va., schools and was a graduate of the U.S. Armed Services Institute.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and the U.S. Air Force, he served in Korea during the Vietnam War. He worked as a truck driver for 20 years.

A son, William McKinley Ferrell II, died June 3, 1994.

Survivors include sons Robert Benjamin Ferrell, Crossville, Tenn., and Keith Everett Ferrell I, Salisbury; daughter Marcella F. Moreau, St. Robert, Mo.; brother Ralph Richard Ferrell; sisters Lillie Jane Hall,Salisbury, and Marsha Burdette, St. Albans, W.Va.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Rowan Memorial Park.The body will be cremated.

Visitation: None.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Cliffton E. Merkt

CHINA GROVE — Cliffton Eugene Merkt, 56, 1185 Brown Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Robert Oscar Morgan

The funeral will be Thursday for Robert Oscar Morgan, 77, Salisbury, who died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital,Charlotte, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Sept. 9, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Morgan, a son of the late Clarence S. and Erma Shaver Morgan, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He recently retired from Bill’s Exterminating Co. Earlier, he retired after 27 years from A &P Co., where he was an assistant manager.

He was a former member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a church trustee.

Survivors include wife Arleene Koontz Morgan, whom he married Oct. 30, 1943; son Robert David “Bob” Morgan, Davidson; daughter Judy Morgan Peeler, Salisbury; sister Gertrude Morgan Broadway, Salisbury; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Emmanuel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald S. Wagner, former pastor, and the Rev. Bill Hallman, pastor. Entombment at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Coy H. Newport

NEW LONDON — Coy H. Newport, 77, New London, died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 19, 1924, in Montgomery County, Mr. Newport was a son of the late Milo and Addie Hurley Newport. He was a 1942 graduate of Troy High School and attended King Business School. He was a graduate of Spencer School of Watch Making, Spencer.

During World War II, he was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. He flew 17 missions out of England in 1944. His plane was shot down Nov. 5, 1944, over Ludwigshaffer,Germany, and he was a prisoner of war for seven months. He was a member of Metrolina Ex-Prisoners of War, Charlotte, New London-Richfield VFW Post 6369, DAV and the American Legion.

A watch maker and jeweler, he was employed at P.L. Huneycutt Furniture Co. for 11 years. The retired owner/ operator of Coy’s Laundromat, he opened the business in 1956, it being the first coin operated laundromat in Albemarle.

He was a member of New London United Methodist Church and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include wife of 55 years Margaret Johnson Newport; sons Dale R. Newport, New London, and Kent E. Newport, Albemarle; sisters Cleo Carter and Mary Poole, both of New London; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, New London United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Patricia Jenkins and the Rev. Bill Faggart. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Burial, New London Cemetery.Full military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 5-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

Judy Glover Simms

Judy Glover Simms, 58, 121 Cliff Edge Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2001) at her home.

A Gaston County native, Mrs. Simms was the daughter of the late William Carl and Ruth Adams Glover. She retired as a convenience store clerk and was a former member of Loray Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Melvin Simms; daughters Donna Cunningham, Atlanta, Ga., Dawn Humphrey, Salisbury, and Cynthia Absher, Bessemer City; sons Billy Absher, Concord, and Daniel R. Simms, Cleveland; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia, conducted by the Rev. Rob Roberts.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Ward Funeral Home, Gastonia.

Memorials: Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 825-A W. Henderson St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

Alma Hinkle Whirlow

The funeral will be Thursday for Alma Lucille Hinkle Whirlow, 84, Salisbury, who died Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at her home.

Born June 11, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Whirlow, a daughter of the late Hollis and Emma Leonard Hinkle, was educated in the Spencer and Salisbury schools.

She was a salesclerk at Becky Hinkle Fabric Shop and later worked at North Carolina Finishing Co. A longtime member of Oakdale Baptist Church, Spencer, she worked in the children’s department for 58 years. She was in the Honors Sunday School Class, the Annie Armstrong Mission Group and the W.A.O. Group.

Her husband, Robert Mitchell Whirlow, died Dec. 4, 1973.

Survivors include son Ted Whirlow, Salisbury; and brothers H.L. and Paul Hinkle, both of Salisbury, and James Ray Hinkle, Apex.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Oakdale Baptist Church, Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Richard Goss, pastor, and the Rev. Robert T. Heard, former pastor. Burial will be in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Estelle H. Wilhelm

KANNAPOLIS — Estelle Honeycutt Wilhelm, 94, 710 Buick Ave., died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2001) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.
